Stolen Identity: Mute Heiress

Chapter 499: You Left?

Chapter 499: You Left?

Dawn woke to the soft morning light coming through the curtains.

For a few seconds, she stayed still; her eyes were still heavy with sleep.

When she didn’t feel Jamal beside her, she reached out and frowned when she didn’t feel him on the bed.

She opened her eyes fully.

Jamal’s side of the bed was empty.

She lifted her head and looked around the room. The bathroom door was open.

His clothes from last night were gone from the chair.

His shoes were gone too.

Dawn picked up her phone from the bedside table.

There was no message.

She frowned. “Where did he go?”

She quickly dialled his number.

The phone rang twice before he answered.

“Hey. Good morning, babe.”

Dawn sat up. “Where are you?”

“Sorry. I had to leave early.”

Her brows pulled together. “You left? When?”

“A little while ago. I had to leave early to take care of something.”

Dawn looked at the empty space beside her. “And you didn’t think to wake me?”

“I didn’t want to disturb you.”

She sighed. “What did you have to leave this early to take care of?”

There was a short silence on the other end. “I’ll come and pick you up later. We can go to the exhibition together.”

She sat quietly. “Jamal? That doesn’t answer my question.”

“It’s personal. I’ll see you later. Love you.”

The call ended.

Dawn lowered the phone slowly as she stared at the screen.

Something did not feel right about the conversation.

Was he upset? Was he angry with her about the things she had said about their sex life?

Her frown deepened.

But they didn’t even fight over it. He had kissed her before she went to sleep, hadn’t he?

She shook her head.

“Maybe he simply had something important to do.”

Still, she could not stop thinking about the possibility that Jamal was mad at her.

After her shower, Dawn went downstairs.

The house was quiet, reminding her that Josh was spending the day with his grandfather.

She walked into the dining room and found Lucy sitting at the table.

Lucy looked up and smiled. “Good morning, dear.”

“Good morning.”

“I was hoping you would join me.”

Dawn smiled and pulled out a chair.

She sat opposite Lucy and reached for the plate in front of her.

Lucy watched her for a moment. “Are you alright?”

Dawn smiled. “Yes, I am.”

Dawn pushed a piece of food around her plate. After a few bites, she looked at Lucy. “Have you heard from Tom?”

Lucy shook her head. “Not yet.” She took a sip of her tea. “But I expect to hear from them soon.”

“Do you think they did the right thing?”

Lucy looked at her. “About Genevieve?”

“Yes.” Dawn lowered her voice. “Do you think they should have told everyone that she was alive?”

Lucy smiled. “Those two do not make choices like that without thinking about them.”

“So you think they have a reason?”

“I know they do.” Lucy placed her cup on the table. “One thing I know about them is that they must have thought about every possible outcome before they released that news.”

Dawn nodded.

Lucy continued. “And I know they wanted to control the story before someone else did.”

Dawn looked at her. “What do you mean?”

“If the people behind this found out that Genevieve was alive from another source, they could have moved first. By releasing the news themselves, Tom and Harry control what people know and what they don’t know.”

Dawn slowly nodded. “That makes sense.”

Lucy reached across the table and touched her hand. “They love Stefan and Genevieve too. They will not do anything that puts them in danger without a plan. Trust them.”

Dawn smiled. “I do.”

“Good.”

They continued eating, and after a few minutes, Lucy raised a brow.

“Is something wrong?”

Dawn looked at her. “No.”

“You’ve been staring at your phone for a while now and you don’t seem to like your food much.”

Dawn smiled as she picked up her cup of coffee. “I guess I’m waiting to hear from Jamal.”

“Did he go somewhere? Is something wrong?”

Dawn sighed. “He left without waking me up. Although he claims he went to take care of something, I can’t help wondering if he’s mad at me.”

Lucy raised a brow. “Did you both fight?”

Dawn shook her head. “No. Not really.”

Lucy gave her a look.

Dawn laughed. “Really, we didn’t fight. I guess that’s why I’m a little worried.”

Lucy smiled. “If you didn’t fight, then relax. He’s a man. Maybe he just needs a bit of space to clear his head.”

“Okay. Thanks.”

Lucy looked around the quiet room. “This house feels strange without Josh. He brings so much noise into this house.”

Dawn laughed. “Yeah. He does. I noticed how silent the house was.”

Lucy smiled. “When is he coming back?”

“Later today.”

“Good.”

Dawn nodded. “He has to begin school tomorrow.”

“That’s good. I’m going to miss you both when you finally get married and move in with Jamal.”

Dawn smiled. “We will definitely miss you too.”

Lucy took another bite of her pancake. “So, what are you doing today? Are you spending the day with Jamal?”

Dawn smiled. “I thought I was. But now I don’t know anymore.” Dawn sighed. “I guess I’ll find something to keep myself occupied until it is time for Mari’s boyfriend’s exhibition.”

Lucy smiled. “The artist?”

“Yes.”

“I’ve heard about him. Andy says he’s proposing to Mari today.”

Dawn laughed out loud. “I knew it! I told Jamal that I had a feeling the exhibition was going to be Mari’s proposal.”

Lucy smiled. “It’s a surprise. So keep it to yourself.”

Dawn smiled happily. “Sure.”

Lucy looked at Dawn for a moment. “Why don’t you come with me to the spa?”

Dawn blinked. “The spa?”

Lucy nodded. “Yes. Since you don’t have anything to do. We could see a movie after. I booked a massage and facial session. But you don’t have to be idle. You can get a manicure or pedicure while you wait for me.”

Dawn smiled as she looked down at her nails. “Not a bad idea.”

“Good.” Lucy picked up her cup. “Then it is settled.”
