Chapter 18 – Mirror Ball
We plunged into the royal palace, and after much difficulty, we reached a semi-underground water source where the core of the water wizard would be. If the sand had been any deeper, my precious back would have exploded. Well, apart from the strain on my back, the royal palace was soberly peaceful, with not a single monster in sight.
As for choosing a small boat to search for the core, the Add was the first to be eliminated as a result of the meeting. The reason was simple: the buggy could not accommodate everyone and was unstable.
Next, the rubber boat was eliminated. The reason was that it had no engine. The rubber boat was the quietest, but when dealing with the water magical creature, the hull of the boat would be in contact with the main body, so the noise level would be meaningless. In that case, it would be more convenient to have an engine.
After much discussion, we finally decided on the Japanese-style boat. It took a long time to decide because the members of the group who like to maneuver boats were very much in favor of the Galette, so I was quite tired.
Although it is a spacious water source in the royal palace, it would be dangerous to use a motorboat indoors. As for me, I thought it would be easy to choose a Japanese-style boat, but I couldn’t ignore the opinion that power was necessary to counter the water-magic creature.
…But no motor boat indoors, right?
Well, there was no problem since we decided on the Japanese-style boat.
“Oh, wouldn’t it be better if we stimulated the magical creature first to find the core?”
It’s a little late for that, but it should be easier to get a better idea of where the core is than to get on a boat and search for it.
“I think Wataru is right, but it’s also a bad idea to strongly stimulate the water magic creature.”
Alessia-san answered my question, but I had a little trouble understanding it. What is a bad idea?
“If we let the magical creature run amok here, it will destroy the royal palace, right? Well, it seems like it would go on a rampage just to explore, but the fewer times we do it, the better.”
Dorothea-san explained to me as I tilted my head. I see. It is scary that an attack like the flooding in the plaza could happen indoors.
But the water magic creature seems to value its territory, so it’s only natural that it would go on a rampage if it was targeted so ruthlessly… or even its own core.
So you want to keep the royal palace from collapsing as much as possible, and if it does collapse, you want to postpone it as much as possible, not now.
“I understand. Then I’ll summon a Japanese-style boat for now.”
When the Japanese-style boat is summoned, the water magic creature attacks the magic circle. The magic circle disappears, leaving the rampaging water magic creatures alone for a while, and when it calms down, everyone gets on the Japanese-style boat.
…Come to think of it, the second time at the plaza caused a flood, didn’t it?
Here, I called the light ball and the rubber boat twice. The third time, I used the Japanese-style boat, but it didn’t cause a flood. It seems that the water magic creature doesn’t want to destroy its home either.
When the rubber boat is sent back, and the engine of the Japanese-style boat is started, the water magic creature reacts to the sound or vibration of the boat and becomes wild.
“It’s getting more and more violent, but it doesn’t seem to be as violent as it was in the square.”
As Alessia-san said, the barrier surrounds the boat, but the water is not rough except near the boat, so I think it is still restrained.
The surface of the water is violently undulating, and the Japanese-style boat begins to sway. A direct attack would have made no difference, so it might have thought to do something to the hull.
“Wataru, get going! Hurry!”
“Yes!”
At Alessia-san’s words, the Japanese-style boat began to move rapidly. The boat bounced on the rising surface of the water, but the propeller somehow caught the water and began to run deeper into the water source.
It was a close call. If it hadn’t been a large-scale attack like a flood, we could have just waited until it calmed down, but only a certain part of the Japanese-style boat rose up and carried us a few meters.
If we had just waited and relaxed like that, we would have been carried out by the water and thrown on the ground. Basically, the ship was summoned as a defensive peerless, but when the water itself is the enemy, you can’t be too careful.
I managed to steer the boat with the light of my flashlight. Oh no, I should have let Felicia handle the boat.
When we were on the Japanese-style boat, I was always in control of the boat, so I sat next to the helm without thinking, but this time, when it was pitch dark, I had to use my reflexes to avoid the stone pillars, Felicia, with her good night vision and reflexes, would have been the right person for the job.
There are other members who have good night vision and reflexes, but they are dangerous when the tension rises, so they are in a different category.
I drove the boat while shouting inwardly, but there was no room to take turns as obstacles appeared like in a racing game. When I steer right and left, the boat moves toward the inside.
I wonder if it’s because I’m leveling up or because of my position as captain… I wish the zone would activate at times like this.
“Wataru, right!”
Ilma-san’s sudden order, which I did not understand, made me turn the oar.
“Wataru, slow down. Turn here as much as you can.”
Again, following Ilma-san’s instruction, I slowed down. The magic creature’s attacks increased as a result of the slowdown.
Whoa, the magical creature is trying to lift the hull with water again, so I move with a sharp turn. I wonder if it is easier to react when you are slow or if the attacks of the water magic creature become more varied.
“Found it!”
I hear Ilma-san’s happy voice as I maneuver the ship with my nerves sharpened. She seems to have found the core.
I look at where Ilma-san is pointing… and see some kind of very conspicuous object in the water. What was it?
I only caught a glimpse of it because of the magical creature’s attack, but I think I saw a mirror ball in the flashlight’s light. Was I looking at the wrong thing?
“That is the magic tool. It’s something very advanced that we can’t reproduce today. I thought they used alchemy to create the water magic creatures, but I hadn’t considered the fusion of alchemy and magic tools.”
An amalgamation of alchemy and magic tools? I don’t know, but it seems to be a valuable object, a so-called lost technology.
I can’t see it myself, but maybe Ilma-san has the eyes of a mad scientist.
But isn’t it too flashy? It’s a mirror ball, that thing, and I, for one, wish it had at least made a little effort to hide it.
It’s like asking people to steal it… No, it was so guarded until we entered this water reservoir that it didn’t need to be hidden?
“Does it reflect light differently? I wonder if it uses different rare metals for different functions? Is it a sphere, or is the center of the core still a magic stone?”
From Ilma-san’s point of view, there seems to be a good reason why it is a mirror ball.
“Ilma, don’t give me any more speculations; just tell me what to do with it. Should we destroy it?”
Alessia-san asks the question, bringing Ilma-san back to her senses. I agree with her because I’m having a hard time maneuvering the boat.
“If we destroy it, it will stop, no doubt. But I doubt that there is any other ancient technology in working condition, let alone the core of a magical creature. We’ll never get it back, so can’t we just recover it without destroying it?”
Ilma-san began to speak recklessly.
She wants us to get the mirror ball into the body of a monster that crushes and kills giant monsters, then melts and digests them cleanly and completely?
The submersible… White Dolphin has been left as a resting place for Pent, so the egg is the only one available, but is it possible?
It won’t break or melt. But I have a feeling that it will be blown out of the water in the middle of the dive because it is not agile enough to move underwater.
It would be difficult indeed.
“Ilma, it may be in working condition, but we’re still being attacked, and it’s definitely corrupted, isn’t it?”
Dorothea-san’s calm rebuke came in.
I took it seriously because it was Ilma-san’s request, but I was fundamentally wrong. That mirror ball seems to be the cause of this country’s destruction, doesn’t it?
It may be in working condition, but you can’t secure such a dangerous thing. Technology may advance with research, but I can only see a future where a second or third monster is created.
“…Let’s destroy it.”
Alessia-san, perhaps imagining a future similar to mine, made her decision. Ilma-san screams that it is a precious thing, but for once, I fully agree with Alessia-san.
The mad scientist is dangerous.
Alessia-san gives the order to attack all at once. I think research is possible if it is destroyed cleanly, but she wants to destroy it thoroughly.
It is a demon that orders Ilma-san to attack with all her might.
I wondered if the attack would be able to reach underwater, but I guess someone of Alessia-san’s class would be able to handle a few meters of water resistance.
At Alessia-san’s command, all of them except me unleashed their attacks. I was surprised to see the quiet Rimu join in. I should be his master.
With a thunderous roar, the outside of the barrier is blocked by steam.
“No way, unharmed?”
Huh? Is it unharmed?
“The moment the attack arrives, a barrier is erected in front of the core. Probably a magic barrier.”
When I was surprised by Alessia-san’s voice, Marina-san explained the reason. She said it was a magic barrier, but it was probably some kind of barrier.
Ancient technology is amazing in that it also has a defensive function.
Well, since they built such an amazing thing, they probably couldn’t handle it if the water magic creature got out of control.
Drowning in advanced technology leads to ruin. I hear that a lot.
“It is coming. Hold on to the hull so you don’t get thrown overboard!”
Alessia-san’s shouted instructions fly out.
That’s right. We’ve launched a direct attack on the core of such a monster. The water magic creature would fight back with all its might without thinking about its territory.
The surface of the water vibrated with a high-pitched sound, just like in the plaza, and the next moment, it was lifted into the sky as if a Japanese-style boat had been launched.
A continuous roar echoes through the air.
Clinging to the hull, I could not see the surroundings clearly, but could it be that all the water was breaking through the ceiling of the royal palace?
The next moment, a beautiful blue sky appears, even though we should be indoors.
It seemed to have broken through all the ceilings of the royal palace and shot up into the sky.
The G-force that I felt was pressing down on me vanished and was replaced by a feeling of floating.
That’s right, once you are launched, the next step is falling.
I wonder why? I feel like I’m falling from a very high place in this adventure.
I should have an exorcism. No, in this world, I should ask the Creator God-sama for help… No. I can only see the future getting worse…
