Chapter 7 – Gothenburg on the Move

We transported large materials from the Stronghold to the port of Gothenburg. Simon-san, the male employee of the commercial guild, Gilmas of the adventurers’ guild, Donatella-san, and Carla-san joined us, and the scene quickly sprang into action.

We were ready to keep transporting the materials, but after five trips, the guild reached its limit, and the transport was stopped for now.

After talking with the tired guild members, we decided to meet again overnight and try again tomorrow. This made me feel a little sad. Even so, we made five trips to bring supplies that weren’t medical, so I think we were able to share some food with people who really needed it.

As expected, the person who contributed the most to cargo transport was Carla-san, who worked with incredible power, like a heavy machine —or even more than a heavy machine. Her ability to move easily in small spaces is like cheating at on-site work.

“So, how did it go at church?”

Alessia-san brought up a serious topic in the Stronghold’s dining hall.

I didn’t ask for details while I was focused on the transport, but now that Claretta-san and the others were back, I couldn’t avoid the heavy topic.

“Well… the situation at the church is just one step away from being the worst.”

Claretta-san began to speak with a serious face, and the start of her story was disturbing, making everyone nervous.

“First of all, there was a shortage of everything, and we were barely able to keep the patients alive, let alone treat them. All we could do was count on the patients’ own healing abilities.”

I’m already overwhelmed, but since I decided to get involved, I have to hear the rest. I’m worried about Mear-san, too.

I steel myself and urge Claretta-san to continue.

It was heavy. It’s very heavy.

Those who were severely ill had already died without help, and now the people who were hospitalized in the church… The phrase “hospitalized in the church” sounds strange, but it seems that many of the people hospitalized were in critical condition.

Even those who could be saved were in a situation where there weren’t enough healers or supplies, and their condition was getting worse little by little, let alone being kept under control.

Even the church members, who had decided to live by their faith despite being novices, were tired of the situation and shed tears of joy at Claretta-san’s help.

In this situation, Claretta-san and Rimu used all their magic to save the lives of the seriously injured and came back.

Claretta-san is amazing. She is exhausted, but she speaks without losing her posture. Rimu, not knowing what was going on, was leaning over my head a little bit.

It’s sad to see Rimu’s plump body losing its tension, but I’m proud of him for working so hard to heal people. I also think it’s cute how Pent is staying close to Rimu out of concern for him.

Being able to make himself smaller is quite convenient. He’s normally about the size to wrap around my neck, but now he’s the size of a small lizard.

“Um, if you could save those people who were almost dead, that means Mear-san is okay, right?”

She’s definitely still alive, so she should be okay as long as she doesn’t die before Claretta-san arrives.

“Yes, I knew Wataru was worried about Mear-san, so I checked on her. It will take some time, but I promise she will recover safely.”

Claretta-san’s words make me feel weak. We’re not close enough to call her a friend, but it’s still sad to hear about the death of someone who was so helpful to me.

I’ve met and talked to quite a few people on this continent. I’m not sure they’re all safe, and I might feel down later, but for now, I’ll try to stay positive and feel relieved.

“Thank you, Claretta. I’ll go visit her tomorrow.”

I have to transport the sea monsters, but I should have time to visit her. What should I bring her?

I’ve already sent the necessary supplies separately, so something sweet and easy to eat would be good. Fruit is a typical gift for someone who is recovering from an illness, but I think cut fruit might be a little unusual in this situation.

This is quite a dilemma.

“Um, Wataru, Mear-san is a woman, so I don’t think she wants anyone to see her looking weak. I’ll take responsibility for her treatment, so let’s wait to visit her until she’s recovered a bit.”

“…Are Mear-san’s injuries severe?”

“Yes, she was injured when the commercial guild was attacked, but she didn’t receive proper treatment and her condition worsened. She has burns, so it will take time to heal. But don’t worry, I’m quite skilled, so I’ll make sure she doesn’t have any scars.”

Claretta-san promised to give a perfect treatment, flexing her muscles. She doesn’t usually make big promises, so she probably said that to make me feel better.

I was very touched by her thoughtfulness.

I wondered if the situation was so bad that people would be reluctant to visit. The church must have been like hell before Claretta-san arrived.

“Please. If you need anything, just let me know.”

“Yes, I’ll count on you then.”

I’ll leave the treatment to Claretta-san and Rimu and focus on transporting the monsters. If the town’s situation improves, it should also have a positive impact on the church.

***

“Master, something incredible is happening!”

The next day, after delivering the first load of the morning, Ines returned to report.

On the second day of transporting the cargo, we began working after carefully considering the arrangement.

Current arrangement:

Monster Transfer Team: Me, Ines, Pent, Alessia-san, and Carla-san.

Church Yeam: Claretta, Rimu, Marina-san, and Ilma-san.

Port/Adventurers’ Guild Standby Team: Donatella-san, Felicia, and Dorothea-san.

Carla-san and I are in charge of moving the monsters in the transfer team. Ines and Alessia-san take turns transporting the rafts to the port on Japanese-style boats.

“What do you mean, ‘amazing’?”

Ines doesn’t seem upset, so I don’t think there was an accident. I suppose the change was obvious, even though she had just gone to the port.

It’s not surprising that people gathered at the port, is it?

“They were setting up a dismantling site. Monsters that require special equipment are taken to the Adventurers’ Guild, but the rest are dismantled at the port because the Adventurers’ Guild can’t accommodate everyone.”

“Can a dismantling site be built so easily?”

Yesterday, it seemed like quite a lot of people had gathered there, but apparently, that was just the beginning. If that many people survived, there is hope for the town’s revival.

That’s good, but why was a dismantling site built? There was no sign of anything like that until last night.

“It’s just a makeshift thing. They made some shade, gathered workbenches, and set up a water source. But it’s enough for dismantling small stuff.”

“Oh, I see.”

I’ve seen something like that at a fishing port before. It’s a place where they process freshly caught shellfish and small fish.

“Maybe because of what Master said, even the elderly and children were given work, and everyone was happy.”

I didn’t see anyone yesterday, and the situation looked dire, so I was worried about the elderly and children. However, it appears that even those who are physically weak are managing to survive.

It looks lively, so I’ll go check it out later. I’d better work hard on the transfer.

“Ines, thanks for the report. Please continue with the cargo transfer.”

“Got it. I’m hoping for a reward, too.”

“…It depends on how hard you work.”

Perhaps because she saw me promise Carla-san a reward, Ines seems to be aiming for one too.

“But, Ines, if you don’t work hard enough, your reward will be small. In this case, it will be compared to Carla-san’s work.”

Carla-san is working so hard that even the word “amazing” seems inadequate when she hears that she can eat as much as she wants on her favorite ship for a day.

“……I’ll work hard enough to get a moderate reward.”

Ines joins the transfer with a wry smile. She probably understands that it’s impossible to match Carla-san’s efforts.

Before Ines, I, Alessia-san, and Pent can fill half of the raft, Carla-san fills the other half.

We’re supposed to be high-level and reasonably strong. Pent is smoothly transporting monsters after returning his body to its original size. Still, we can’t beat Carla-san.

In a fantasy world, it’s normal for a group to be stronger than an individual, and perhaps the same applies to carrying cargo.

“Ines, is it okay to keep carrying?”

I ask Ines, who has returned from the port.

With Carla-san around, our work efficiency has improved. We’ve already made six trips back and forth on the raft, and it’s not even noon yet. It wouldn’t be surprising if they started to reach capacity soon, even if they built a dismantling site at the port.

“It’s not that it’s okay, but there are more dismantling sites, and more people are gathering. Some people are taking breaks, so if we’re not careful, we might not have enough people to do the work. Are you sure you want to go next? Maybe you should ask Alessia to check when she goes?”

Really? That’s six rafts full of monsters! It must take a lot of time to dismantle them. Oh, that’s why they added more dismantling sites.

“Yeah, let’s check it out just in case. Alessia, can you do that?”

Dealing with it felt like dealing with a black hole. I felt checking was pointless, but I decided to check just in case.

“Got it. I’ll ask Simon when I get over there.”

I feel better knowing Alessia-san will check. For now, let’s work hard and make two more trips before the lunch break.

I underestimated them. People’s desires… No, maybe it’s not desire. I’ve lived a carefree life until now and didn’t realize how strong people’s will to live is.

To summarize what Alessia-san told me, there is plenty of room. If not enough, they will add more dismantling sites, so we can bring as much as we want.

Furthermore, word of our situation has spread beyond Gothenburg, and people are gathering from the surrounding areas.

I don’t know the extent of the damage, but I’m relieved to hear that there are survivors in small villages. However, even with all the survivors gathering, we still can’t meet the demand.

I asked if there would be waste from dismantling so many monsters, but they said processing the materials is also work, so nothing will go to waste.

I half-jokingly thought about it, but it seems like we’ll have to go out to sea and hunt monsters for real.
