Chapter 1109: City of Family
Chapter 1109: City of Family
"What are you thinking about?"
A beautiful black-haired woman wrapped her arm around a taller man with silver hair from behind. She had a kind smile on her face as she asked her question.
The silver-haired man just stood on the balcony of his house, looking towards the east with a distracted expression. By Earth standards, this house was slightly above-average in size, but when the house was compared to the other houses in the city, it was truly tiny.
"There are just 300,000 years left," the man commented absentmindedly.
"This again?" the woman asked with a roll of her eyes as she turned her man around to face her. "I thought we had an agreement. You said you would be fine with it. You said you could live a life like this."
The man sighed. "I thought so, but the more time passes, the more I feel like I could've done more."
"Done what?" the woman asked with some annoyance. "You've told me yourself that there is nothing you can do. You said that all eventualities are horrible. That's why you decided to live a peaceful life with me, right?"
The man looked to the side with an unsure expression. "Yes, but... what if it was the wrong choice?"
The woman's brows furrowed. "Wrong choice?" she repeated with a darker tone as she flatly pointed to the bustling city outside of their home. "You call this a wrong choice? All of this exists because of us, but mostly, you."
The man's Energy Sense looked at the bustling city. There were tens of millions of people in this city, and as the man looked at the people, he could see his traces in them. This was not just a city but also a family home.
Years ago, after he had comprehended the Law of Immortal Lightning, he had felt a bit lost. He was one of the reasons why his friend had died, and this thought hadn't left him.
For some reason, after comprehending the Law of Immortal Lightning, he had lost a lot of his drive. After all, he didn't need to grow stronger anymore. With his Elemental, which was now a Peak Ascendant, he could do whatever he wanted in Ayuvar.
Naturally, he had thought about what he had to do next.
The Fusion.
However, he had not been a Legendary Transcendent or Legendary Primal, which meant he needed to have an Infused Level Six Law and a Level Eight Law to undergo fusion. As someone who only focused on lightning, this wasn't easy to pull off.
He had tried to increase the power of his Imposing Law, but progress was slow. If he kept at it, he might just barely manage to push his Imposing Law to a sufficient level.
But then what? A life filled with nothing but swinging his spear just to enter the Supreme World again. More conflicts. More wars. More endless training. More death.
Even more, what if Swamp Dragon's plan didn't work? What if Kyle didn't resurrect? What if Kyle lost?
If Fierce Breaker won against Kyle, all of Ayuvar would be destroyed. The Major Law of Death would corrupt the World Wall until Ayuvar stopped functioning. Naturally, Sebastian knew that he wouldn't survive.
Only if Kyle managed to resurrect and kill the Overseer would there be a future. Yet, even if he succeeded, what then? Sebastian would just enter the Immortal Dimension, which was probably even more cutthroat.
Sebastian hadn't thought that he would be someone who wanted to have a community, but after he experienced the loss of basically all of his companions, his mind had changed.
Training was so monotonous.
So, Sebastian had taken a break and just traveled the world. Eventually, he had met Melanie, who had been the Head Elder of a weaker World Organization back then.
They started talking, and eventually, Sebastian's words made Melanie think.
Comprehending Laws, signing forms, giving orders, gathering data, avoiding wars, battling for her life...
That was her life.
Did she enjoy it?
She thought she did, but she wasn't sure anymore.
While she had lived her entire life by following what her logic told her to do, she had decided to change things up. She told the Organization that she was stepping down and leaving.
Leaving had been surprisingly easy and surprisingly difficult. While everyone gave her a hearty goodbye, it didn't take long until several powerful Seekers started hunting her. None of these Seekers were members of her Organization, but it was clear how they knew about her new status as a Lone Elder.
However, she wasn't a pushover. While she couldn't win against so many Seekers, she could stay alive with her superior speed.
Out of sheer coincidence, she met Sebastian again while fleeing from several Seekers. She hadn't left her Organization because she was in love with Sebastian. His words had simply triggered the thought process that led to her leaving.
When she saw him, she decided to avoid him. Sebastian had been an Ascendant, but the people following her were also Ascendants. It was better not to involve him.
And then, Sebastian had gotten involved, and his Elemental made short work of the pursuers.
Melanie felt bad since Sebastian had made an enemy of several World Organizations for her sake. Additionally, his Karmic Luck had dropped several levels.
Yet, the two of them decided to stick together. The following period was as tumultuous as it was peaceful. Many Seekers tried to take revenge on Sebastian, and just as many Seekers died to his Elemental.
Just when things seemed to escalate even further, Budding Forest stepped in to mediate. With Budding Forest's power as an excuse, the other World Organizations could take a step back without losing a lot of face.
By then, Sebastian and Melanie had become good friends. Sebastian didn't feel as lonely anymore, and Melanie felt free of all responsibility while with Sebastian.
Love blossomed, and the two of them talked about their futures. During that conversation, Sebastian had shared a lot of his secrets with her. Eventually, they had come to an agreement.
"I would rather have a short life of happiness than a long life of struggle."
"I agree."
The two of them decided to stop pursuing the path of power and created a family.
Over the years, they had many children. In their perception, their mortal children seemed to die within the blink of an eye, while most of their other children died in battle.
Yet, enough of them survived that the family could grow bigger and bigger until it had turned into a gigantic city.
There were many Sages and several Spirit Lords within the city, and if it weren't for Sebastian's deterrence, several Organizations would have already tried to consume the city.
Sebastian just looked at his progeny.
His family.
And yet, he barely knew any of them. All of his direct children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren were already dead. The oldest surviving member of Sebastian's family had eight "greats" in front of their familial status.
Sebastian hadn't even spoken to them before. There were so many generations between them that he didn't feel any connection anymore.
As he looked at his city, he didn't see his family.
He just saw a city of strangers who relied on him for safety.
'One more Realm,' Sebastian thought. 'Immortals are immortal. Their longevity does not run out.'
'Just one more Realm...'
