Chapter 959: Widowed Sister-In-Law
Chapter 959: Widowed Sister-In-Law
“First, I should let them know that I have recovered and put their worries to rest.” Thinking this, he fixed his robe and stood up from the bed.
Half a year ago, he suddenly fell sick. His family had several doctors check him up, but they couldn’t determine what was wrong with him.
Without identifying the illness, treatment was impossible so he had been lying in bed for half a year during which he rapidly became weak and just half an hour before Max’s soul took over the body, he had passed away.
Creak~!
Just as he reached the door, it swung open and a beautiful woman in her mid-twenties in simple yellow robes walked in, carrying a tray in her hands and a listless expression on her face.
“You…” When she saw him, her eyes widened in disbelief.
“You aren’t mistaken, second sister-in-law, it’s indeed me, Gu Chen.” He said with a smile after taking a discreet look at her charming figure.
This woman was his second eldest brother’s widow, Li Xiaomin. After he died in the beast tide two years ago, she had fallen into a depression.
She barely spoke, stopped interacting with people and no longer had the appetite to eat anything. If she wasn’t a Blood Cleansing realm cultivator and thus was able to go without eating food for two or three days with it affecting her health, she would have become malnutritioned.
Everyone sympathized with her. She was, after all, a newly married woman in the prime of her life with a beautiful life ahead. Without her husband, it wasn’t an exaggeration to say her life had come apart.
“You recovered? How? No, that’s not important.” She hurriedly shook her head, then smiled. “It’s great that you have recovered. Everyone was worried for you.”
Max smiled in response while inwardly feeling bad for her. Even though she was smiling and he could tell she was genuinely happy for him, she still had that lost look about her.
‘I can’t let this continue.’ he thought, his resolve to give her a happy life that his second brother should have given her became stronger because not only was she a beautiful woman and his sister-in-law, she had been very good to him as she had been taking care of him for the past half a year.
Because his mother and sisters had been assisting his eldest brother in running the family, they barely had time to come and check up on him despite their worries for him. So she had been responsible of taking care of him.
“Hmm. Now you all can be worry free, sister-in-law.” Max smiled, then glanced at the tray in her hands and saw a bowl of soul.
“You made this?” he asked.
“Yes. It’s made from a wild bear’s bones that someone in the family recently hunted. It’s quite nutritious. I have been giving it to you for the past few days.” she said, a peculiar look flashing in her eyes.
His condition had been worsening ever since he fell ill. Since last month, he had begun falling unconscious but he would wake up on his own after a few hours.
However, in the past few days, his condition had reached an extreme. His body had burned though everything it could to sustain him, he no longer had even an ounce of fat or muscles left in his body. Moreover, the food they force-fed him wouldn’t get digested fully so he wasn’t able to get much energy from it either.
Because of this, after he fell unconscious five days ago, he didn’t wake up no matter how they tried to rouse him. The doctors had told them he could die at any time which filled the family with incomparable sadness.
Every time she came to feed him some soup, the thought that she would find him dead would inevitably cross her mind. The same had happened when she opened the door earlier.
However…
Not only Gu Chen wasn’t dead, he had recovered enough to walk on his own? This was inconceivable.
Max could see she was again starting to think how he had recovered so suddenly, so he rubbed his stomach and said, “That’s good. I’m starving and feeling very weak right now.”
Saying this, he walked back to the bed and sat down before calling her, “Come here, sister-in-law, let me have it.”
His voice interrupted Li Xiaomin’s thoughts and she hurriedly walked over and put the tray down beside him.
Then out of habit, she scooped some soup with the spoon, blew on it to cool it and was about to feed him when she realized he could eat himself.
“Brother-in-law, can you eat—” Before she could finish the question or put the spoon back into the bowl, he reached out and gently grabbed her hand.
Then looking at her with a soft look in his eyes, he said, “I fear I might accidentally spill it, sister-in-law. So, please feed me with your hands.”
Li Xiaomin’s heart trembled when he suddenly grabbed her hand and gave her that look.
Even if these gestures were innocent, she should have felt uncomfortable, after all, a man who wasn’t her husband was touching her and giving her that look. However, she realized she didn’t feel that way. In fact, she felt very… calm and at ease, something she hadn’t felt in the past two years.
Suddenly, she felt very complicated inside. She wanted to feel this calm and relax because the past two years had taken a toll on her, but she felt it would be wrong to do this.
“Sister-In-Law…” Just then she heard him call out to her again and as if his voice had some magic, she found her conflicting emotions settling down.
She looked at him, really looked this time. Then she nodded, “Yes, you haven’t recovered yet. So, I should feed you.”
Max heaved a sigh of relief. As always, his charm was very strong.
Precisely because of this, he had always been reluctant to use it, not wanting to manipulate the women around him.
However, this time the situation wasn’t the same because he had used it with good intentions, wanting to take his sister-in-law’s pain away.
