Chapter 965: Scheme Targeting Gu Family

Just as he finished speaking, Gu Yinyin threw herself into his embrace, hugging him tightly. She shook and trembled as she silently sobbed.

Max felt the front of his robe get wet. His expression softened and his heart was filled with warmth.

‘Such a loving and caring sister. How lucky Gu Chen was.’ He thought. Then he placed the rice bucket down and wrapped his hands around her upper back—it was easier to do so because he was half a head taller than her. He then put his face to the side of her head, and inhaled deeply, taking in her hair’s scent.

After a few seconds, when Gu Yinyin calmed down, he released her and took a step back.

“How did you suddenly recover, Third Brother?” Gu Yinyin asked, still having a hard time believing that he had recovered.

“I don’t know. Maybe whatever the illness was, just like it had appeared without any warning, it left the same.” Max shrugged, “I only know that in the morning, I regained consciousness and found myself feeling better.”

“I see.” Gu Yinyin nodded, then exhaled in relief, her pale face lighting up, “That’s good news, Third Brother. Mother, First brother and everyone else would be happy when they find out.”

“Hmm.” Max nodded, then narrowed his eyes as he stared at her, “Third Sister, why do you look so haggard? And how come you were carrying this rice bucket? Where are the servants?”

This was the main lineage’s compound and normally, many family members and servants could be seen walking around, doing something or other, but today, there was no one here save for his sister.

Gu Yinyin looked taken aback when he asked this, but a moment later, realization flickered in her eyes.

“Third Brother…” In a low voice and with a saddened look on her face, she explained, “You must remember that Liu and Song families had already started targeting our businesses throughout the city before you fell ill.”

“Until four months ago, the situation was still salvageable as we were still earning enough, but four months ago, both families increased their suppression. They not only lowered the prices of the things we sell, they also hired some goons to cause trouble at our storefronts and harass customers. Because of this, people have stopped visiting our stores and for the last four months, we haven’t earned a single penny. So to reduce expenses, the Elder Brother asked every maid and servant to leave.”

Max’s expression darkened.

Liu and Song family…

They were small-scale families like the Gu family and used to have good relations before Patriarch Gu passed away. Let alone trying to undermine each other’s businesses, they tended to band together to protect against the suppression of stronger families of the Redwood City.

Ever since Patriarch Gu fell in the beast tide, however, both families broke off their relations and began targeting Gu family’s business. However, since they weren’t much stronger than the Gu family and were already stretched thin protecting their businesses, the Gu family wasn’t impacted.

But four months ago, they suddenly became more active in suppressing them…

“Third Sister, do you know what made them so aggressive all of a sudden four months ago?” Max asked.

“Yes.” Gu Yinyin nodded and an angry look appeared on her face as she told him, “First Brother has reached the peak of Blood Condensation. Now both families are panicking and doing everything in their power to stop him from reaching Bone Strengthening.”

His mind whirled as he sifted through the information he got from Gu Chen’s memories and soon a look of realization appeared on his face.

“No wonder…” He nodded in understanding, knowing why they didn’t want him to reach Bone Strengthening.

The Redwood city had an unspoken rule: only the cultivation families that had at least one cultivator in the Bone Strengthening Realm could settle here.

Gu, Liu and Song families were similar in that they had come from nearby towns and settled into Redwood city barely a decade ago. Each of them also had just one Bone Strengthening Realm cultivator—their patriarchs.

In the villages or towns, as soon as someone entered the Bone Strengthening Realm, they would migrate to the nearby city because the cities were a lot more prosperous than the villages and towns and could allow them to become stronger.

The Gu, Liu and Song families had done the same and almost at the same time. Because of this, their patriarchs were in the first layer of Bone Strengthening and were of equal strength.

Over the eight year, they established a few small businesses in the city and slowly accumulated the cultivation resources which they used to get stronger.

Before the Patriarch Gu died, leaving the family without any Bone Strengthening realm cultivator at the helm, all three of them had reached the peak of Third Layer Bone Strengthening.

According to the unspoken rule, the Gu family should have been expelled from the city, but because Patriarch Gu had died protecting the city, an exception was made to honor his contribution—as long as Gu family could produce a Bone Strengthening Realm Cultivator within three years, they could keep staying in the city.

This decision displeased the Liu and Song families, who had their greedy eyes on Gu family’s properties in the city.

When the three families formed an alliance to protect their interests from the stronger families, they had made an agreement that in case something happened to any of them and their family didn’t have another Bone Strengthening Realm cultivator to stabilize the family, the other two had the first right to buy the former’s family property in the city.

This was done to prevent those stronger families, whose guts the trio hated with passion because they didn’t want them to survive in the city, from acquiring their family’s property.

This agreement, of course, would only be enforceable if neither of the other two families had a hand in the former’s downfall.

Since neither Liu nor Song family had contributed in Patriarch Gu’s death and the Gu family didn’t have another Bone Strengthening Realm Cultivator, they had the right to buy Gu family’s estate.

But the grace period of three years the city gave Gu Family made it possible for it to produce a Bone Strengthening realm cultivator, they were naturally displeased.

Thus, the first thing they did was to break off their relations, then they began targeting Gu family’s businesses, so the Eldest Brother, the only person who had the hopes of reaching the Bone Strengthening in the next years would become busy stabilizing the businesses.

However…

They hadn’t thought that Gu Chen’s mother, His step-mothers, the two sisters and he would take it upon themselves to look after the businesses and not let Eldest Brother, Gu Rong, be distracted.

When the two families got the news, they panicked and decided to go all out and destroy the Gu Family’s businesses so their source of income would be cut off. Then, Gu Rong wouldn’t have enough resources to advance to Bone Strengthening during the remaining time.

Then, when the time limit was up and Gu family had to leave the city, they would swoop in with the agreement and buy off their properties at cheap prices and expand their families.

“It’s a nice scheme.” Max muttered, his eyes glinting coldly, “Unfortunately, you are destined to not achieve your goals.”

Gu Yinyin looked at him in surprise.

Shouldn’t he feel down? Also, what gave him the confidence to say Liu and Song families would fail? Does he think First Brother would be able to advance to Bone Strengthening in remaining six months?

She bit her lip. After hesitating for a moment, she said, “Third Brother, First Brother would have indeed advanced to Bone Strengthening before the time limit despite everyone, but…”

Max’s face fell when he saw her expression. “But what? What happened?”
