Chapter 1203: Frostborn
Chapter 1203: Frostborn
After the first attack, there was no second one. However, the group remained vigilant, ready for any eventuality.
Time passed, but nothing happened. The icy energy has regained power over the territory, and the snow has already begun to hide the traces of the Hailey eruption.
Only then did Lina pay attention to the arrow’s trajectory. The more she remembered how the arrow flew, the more she frowned.
“It wasn’t aimed at a specific person,” she finally said.
And even more so, it was not a mistake.
Lina was well aware of the difference. The arrow was fired to gauge their reaction, not to take someone’s life.
“You’re right,” Lucinda confirmed, agreeing with Lina’s conclusions.
Then she turned to Ned and asked:
“Did you notice the arrow?”
Ned frowned, but then nodded.
Even if Lina hadn’t warned him, he would have noticed the arrow, but a little later.
“Now try to compare this attack with the one that killed your clone,” Lucinda suggested.
And Ned’s face immediately became serious.
Both attacks were completely different.
His clone didn’t even notice the arrow until it hit him.
“Whoever fired the arrow intentionally allowed the attack to be detected,” he said.
Lucinda nodded and glanced in the direction the arrow had come from.
“He’s testing us,” she concluded.
Not waiting for the attack, the group decided to leave the place as soon as possible.
The avalanche brought them back to the bottom of the slope, and they had to start climbing again.
They had not gone far when the Forbidden Zone made it clear to them that it was not worth waiting for an easy climb. Ice ghouls began to appear from under the snow cover again, and soon the attacks of the snow wolves resumed.
The situation worsened as the sky darkened.
As night fell, the concentration of ice energy became even higher, and combined with the gusty winds, ordinary mana protection was no longer enough.
Irene and the others took out the Fire Crystals one by one and began to warm their bodies, absorbing the fire element.
The realization that an unknown enemy was nearby depressed the group more than the next wave of ghouls. They couldn’t afford to stop and wait it out: the night was getting more dangerous, the cold was getting worse, and the enemies kept attacking. However, they couldn’t move forward safely either. Every step had to be taken with anxiety, expecting that at any moment an arrow would fly out of the snow.
Time passed slowly, and with it the night dragged on.
By the middle of the night, everyone was tired and exhausted, especially Lina and Lucinda, who, as Diamond-ranked beings, tried their best.
They passed through many different places during the night. At one time, they were carefully making their way along narrow ledges over a precipice, and at another time — past arches of transparent ice, inside which frozen creatures could be seen.
Silhouettes resembling ice towers could be seen in the distance, and a couple of times they came across frozen camps of adventurers and other daredevils who dared to challenge the Ice Caves.
In the dark, cold night of the slope, the group heard unintelligible voices from time to time, which only put more pressure on their consciousness.
It was only towards morning that they reached the foot of the mountain and found the entrance to the cave, which looked like an open mouth of a monster.
As they approached the mountain, the attacks of the ice ghouls and snow wolves became less frequent, and finally the group was able to stop and rest.
So that everyone could relax comfortably, Arslan created a small barrier that protected them from the icy energy and winds.
Everyone was very grateful to him for that.
Despite her fatigue, Lina volunteered to stand guard to give the others a chance to rest.
Lucinda, taking advantage of the moment, finally decided to share with everyone information about the Frostborn race.
“I planned to tell you about them later, when we get closer to the middle layer,” Lucinda said, looking towards the cave. – “Frostborns shouldn’t appear so close to the outer border. At least, as far as I know.”
Hailey, without interrupting the conversation, pulled out the pre-cooked snow wolf meat from her bag, lit a fire and began to roast it. Kitty, smelling the meat, ran up and sat down next to it, without taking her eyes off the meat, periodically licking her mouth.
Ned and Milena built a second campfire together, quickly heated water and prepared hot drinks, which they treated everyone to.
Some of them were enjoying hot tea, while others were enjoying coffee, listening attentively to Lucinda.
“The Frostborns are a small but powerful people who live in Ice Caves. They are similar to elves in their outward beauty and longevity, but their origins, culture, and magic are different from those of the elves,” Lucinda began.
“I’ve never seen the Frostborns myself, but I’ve read the reports of those who encountered them and managed to survive,” she added.
Lucinda’s description was completely consistent with the creature that killed Ned’s clone and attacked them with an ice arrow.
“Indeed,” Hailey nodded. “The description of these creatures is very similar to the Grandmaster.”
Some of them nodded in agreement, remembering two familiar elves — Milica and Eulalia. Adding Lucinda’s description to their image, they mentally imagined Frostborn attacking them.
“As I mentioned, Frostborns usually do not appear in the outer layer, and even in the middle layer they are extremely rare. But even if someone is lucky enough to encounter them, they usually never attack first,” Lucinda continued.
“It is only when the Temple appears here that they become hostile, and even then few can survive after encountering them,” she concluded.
From this information, it followed that the appearance of Frostborn in the outer layer and his attack on them indicated that they were faced with an unusual state of Ice Caves. Their “Conquest” has changed the habitual structure of this place.
After taking a sip of hot coffee, Lucinda, looking at the black liquid, said:
“For Frostborn, the ice caves are his home and his element. Here they are the lords, the supreme predators, and, most importantly, the masters of ice, with the power of words.”
“By the power of words?” Irene asked.
“Yes, their words have great power, so they prefer to remain silent and communicate through gestures and magical writing,” Lucinda nodded, and then, looking up, warned everyone: “Therefore, if you meet Frostborn, be careful and beware of his words.”
I would like to express my gratitude to those who give gifts, power stones and golden tickets. Your support allows me to stay motivated and continue working on the book.
