Chapter 1202: The Ice Arrow
Chapter 1202: The Ice Arrow
A flash lit up the slope.
Suddenly, a pillar of fire burst through the snow with a deafening roar, sending clouds of steam, ice fragments and a cloud of white dust into the air. For a moment, the blizzard seemed to part, revealing a scarlet-orange glow far ahead.
Ned blinked, and the corner of his lips twitched slightly.
“Now I know for sure,” he said.
Lucinda let out a sigh of relief, though her face remained tense.
“Is this Hailey’s doing?” she asked.
“Who else would climb out of the snow with such force, as if a volcano were erupting?” Ned replied with a touch of irony.
“GRAAA!”
The deafening roar of an enraged dragon, or rather, a Lava Dragon, rang out.
Lucinda’s gaze became serious. She looked around at everyone and said:
“We need to hurry.”
Irene and the others exchanged glances.
“Don’t forget where we are and that it’s not just us here,” Lucinda reminded.
Everyone immediately became more serious, realizing that Lucinda was right.
Apart from the explosion and eruption itself, Hailey’s roar could attract other dangerous creatures from the Ice Caves, such as the Diamond-ranked Snow Wolf.
The group hurried towards the scarlet glow that could be seen in the distance. Along the way, they encountered a small number of new ice ghouls. A little to the side, they noticed the movement of the snow wolves, who were watching them, but did not dare to attack.
The closer they got to the site of Hailey’s eruption, the weaker the icy energy became.
Soon, Ned stopped abruptly.
“What happened?”
Milena stopped and turned to him, followed by the others.
“My clone… He’s dead,” Ned confessed.
His words caused alarm in the group.
“Who or what killed him?” asked Lucinda.
“I do not know,” Ned shook his head. “Everything happened too fast. My clone only managed to notice a flash before his connection was cut off.”
“And Hailey? How is she?” — Irene was worried.
“My clone and Hailey were separated by an avalanche, and he died before he found her,” Ned replied.
Lucinda didn’t like the whole situation, and she had a bad feeling about it.
“Is this really one of them? Here, in the outer layer?” flashed through her mind.
But she quickly dismissed those thoughts with a shake of her head.
“Let’s hurry,” she said, and the group quickened their pace, eager to get to Hayley as soon as possible.
The more time passed, the more worried some members of the group became.
Hailey, of course, was a little weird, but she was her own, and everyone was worried about her safety.
After reaching the edge of the black crater, where the snow and ice had completely melted, the group moved deeper. Soon, they finally found Hailey in the very center of the crater. She sat quietly and roasted meat on her fire.
“We were so worried about her, and this fool is sitting and slowly frying meat?” Irene’s right eye twitched.
“Oh! Are you here already?” Hailey was delighted when she noticed the group’s appearance. “You’re just in time. Join me, I just finished roasting the meat of the arrogant wolf that dared to bite me.”
“Wolf meat?” Milena wrinkled her nose.
Kitty ran up to Hailey first and started asking for a piece of meat, waving her paws.
The others did not lose their vigilance, carefully examining the surroundings.
According to Ned, his clone was killed before he found Hailey, but he was already with her. This suggested that whoever had killed him might still be nearby, watching them.
“Strange…” Lina whispered, looking around warily and not taking her hands off the sword.
“It’s too quiet here. After what Hailey was doing, everyone who was nearby should have gathered here. But there is no one.”
Nemo nodded silently, his gaze swept over the gradually freezing terrain.
“Apparently, something scared them off,” he transmitted through a mental link.
Lucinda looked towards Hailey, who was nonchalantly handing Kitty a piece of roast meat.
“The same creature that killed Ned’s clone?” she asked.
There was no response, but the tension in the air increased noticeably.
“Watch out!” Lina exclaimed, and in the blink of an eye, like lightning, she disappeared from that place, appearing a little to the side. With a swing of her sword, she cut into two pieces an ice arrow that was rushing towards them at great speed.
Arrow fragments fell with a crash on both sides of the group, and then an explosion of icy energy rang out, forming a long shelf of sharp ice.
Besides Lina, only Lucida managed to notice this arrow, the others didn’t even have time to react.
“This is…” Lucinda, overwhelmed by the effects of the attack, realized that her worst fears had been confirmed.
“Everybody be on your guard!” she exclaimed. “Frostborn is after us!”
“Huh? Frostborn?” — Hailey stopped roasting the meat and got to her feet.
“This is the dominant race in the Ice Caves, a race whose ancestor is the Overseer of this Forbidden Zone.”
In the distance, among the newly fallen snow, stood a lone figure. The creature had a glowing crystal bow in its hands.
It resembled an elf, but had pale, bluish-tinged skin decorated with subtle blue patterns on its arms, neck, and around its eyes. He had short white hair, pupil-less eyes, and slightly elongated ears.
He was dressed in an unusual white robe with blue patterns.
Seeing that his attack was deflected, he scattered his bow.
Then his attention turned to another place, where with his recent attack he destroyed someone who should not have been here — a representative of the Forest of Doppelgangers.
Not a single emotion showed on his face. The creature took another look at the groups and, without saying a word, headed back into the depths of the Ice Caves.
The curiosity that had brought him here had been satisfied. At least as much as was acceptable. He could no longer interfere with the process of “conquest” started by his esteemed ancestor. His respect was stronger than his desire to stay and learn more about the guests from the outside world.
