Chapter 1204: The Ice Caves

Chapter 1204: The Ice Caves

Lucinda glanced at the entrance to the Ice Caves.

It took them a long time to get here, and it’s not even the border of the middle layer yet.

By this time, everyone had already drunk the recovery potions they had bought from the Nexus trading console. The fatigue has left their body, and soon they will be ready to continue the journey.

“As soon as we cross the border of the middle layer, the difficulty will only increase,” she addressed everyone. “Besides traps, monsters, and frostborn, the cold itself will become our main enemy.”

“Where is it worse?” — Milena asked, clutching a hot mug of tea with both hands and enjoying its pleasant warmth.

The others also frowned. One night spent fighting in the bitter cold and wind was a real challenge for them.

“In the middle layer, try not to lose the feeling of cold,” Lucinda warned. “Remember: while you’re cold, it’s a good sign. So you still feel the danger. But if the cold suddenly disappears, if it seems to you that it has become easier or warmer, do not rejoice. This is the first sign of a white stupor.”

“White stupor?” — Arslan asked, pouring himself a mug of hot tea after coffee.

Lucinda smiled and replied:

“It shouldn’t bother you. The effect of the white stupor affects everyone who has no affinity with the element of ice.”

Everyone immediately turned their attention to Arslan.

In their team, apart from Ned, who could take on any shape and affinity with the elements, Arslan was the only one who had an affinity with the element of ice and had no problems with the cold.

“First, a person stops feeling the cold, then the cold penetrates into his consciousness, and he stops noticing others. And after that, he forgets why he came to this place and loses his fear of death.”

After learning the details, everyone realized the seriousness of this phenomenon.

“I suggest not saving Fire Crystals and using them for warmth from time to time and not waiting until it’s too late,” Irene suggested, and everyone agreed with her.

“I support it. Besides, we got the fire crystals for free,” Milena added with a smile, reminding everyone how during the conversation Idan, knowing where they were going, shared with them enough crystals to be safe.

Soon, Lucinda switched places with Lina, giving her the opportunity to rest for a while, and she took up a guard post.

Everyone realized that they had arrived at the end of the third day and that they had little time, so they could not afford a long rest.

After packing up, the group soon finally entered the Ice Caves.

At first, they walked through a long and slippery tunnel covered with ice. From time to time, this tunnel intersected with other similar tunnels.

Of course, the Forbidden Zone did not allow them to safely pass on. Ice spiders with sharp-tipped paws began to appear from the many crevices and holes and attack the group.

Boom!

With a powerful blow, Hailey pinned one of the spiders to the icy wall of the cave. However, when she tried to remove her hand, she found that it was covered with a cold, sticky substance that began to freeze rapidly.

“What the hell is this?”

She tried to remove the substance from her hand, but it quickly solidified and she stuck to the icy wall.

“These are ice webs. Use your fire to melt them,” Lucinda prompted her.

At the same moment, Hailey burst into flames, enveloping her entire body and melting the ice around her.

The brightness and warmth of the fire caused the spiders to retreat, and the group took advantage of this to speed up their pace.

By themselves, the spiders did not pose a serious threat to the group, but they slowed down progress and constantly distracted attention. That was probably the most frustrating part. The group didn’t have much time left anyway, and the Ice Caves seemed to be doing their best to slow down their progress.

Soon, they found themselves in a spacious cave where many passageways intersected. There were stalactites hanging on the ceiling, which glowed and cast a cold light, illuminating the space.

And so the first obstacle arose in front of them — how to choose the path?

“Where are we going now?” Hailey, like everyone else, instinctively turned to Lucinda, who knew the area better than anyone else.

Lucinda frowned slightly as she looked at the several identical passageways ahead.

While they were thinking, ice spiders began to appear from other passageways.

“This way!” called Nemo, using a mental link, and pointed to one of the three passageways from which the spiders had not appeared.

The others exchanged glances, trusting his choice, and followed him.

As soon as they were inside, Arslan erected a barrier wall, blocking the spiders from entering.

Another tunnel, and then a cave full of passages. However, Nemo was always quick to choose a path, and the group moved forward quickly.

After the third cave, everyone had a question: “How does he do it?”

Nemo himself could not clearly explain why this particular passage led to the goal. He just felt that this was where they needed to go. It was as if something was pointing or pulling at him.

The group lost count of the number of caves they passed before they found themselves at the exit of another tunnel and almost fell off a huge cliff.

When they stopped at the exit, they discovered a huge cavity inside the mountain.

It was amazing: when they looked up, they even saw clouds with snow falling from them. For a moment, they thought they had found a way to the surface.

However, after going down and walking far enough, they realized that they were still inside the mountain. But the most important thing is that they have finally reached the border of the middle layer.

Surprisingly, during the entire journey from one end of the cave to the other, the group did not meet a single inhabitant of these places.

At the end, there was a passage sealed with ice and an ice wall.

There was a bright blue inscription on the ice wall:

“One must stay so that the others can continue on their way.”
