Chapter 1208: The Power of Words
Chapter 1208: The Power of Words
Ned looked at his new body in surprise.
He was based on the legacy of the Alpha of Madness, a bloodline that best matched his true identity.
And on top of that, his body absorbed the traits of his older brother’s other bloodlines—Alpha Fire, Alpha Light, and Lumiar. Traits that Ned considered almost native or especially important to himself. This is not just a set of copied features, these are reflections that have become part of his personality.
Acquiring his true form did not deprive Ned of the ability to copy others. On the contrary, he felt that the very principle of this ability had changed.
Previously, in order to use someone else’s power, he had to take on someone else’s form and temporarily become a reflection of another being. It has not disappeared, but now it has added the ability to hold multiple reflections in its true form at the same time.
Ned could feel the power surging through his new body, but he also noticed a significant flaw.
Using so many different abilities required a significant expenditure of energy. His mana reserves were rapidly running out.
His body began to change again.
His height returned to its usual height, his hair became shorter, and instead of two rotating rings, there was only one glowing pink and purple behind his back.
“A combination of the Alpha of Madness and Alpha of Fire will be enough for me to fight this opponent,” Ned thought, abandoning the rest of his abilities. This allowed him to significantly reduce his mana consumption, which was already low after creating the clone.
“My clones…” Ned glanced at his fighting clone.
Acquiring true form did not change the nature of Ned’s clones. They were still created based on the creatures he had once copied, and were limited by the scope of these appearances.
However, Ned realized something else. In his normal state, he didn’t need the energy of the clones. As long as he only used one or two of their traits, the mana consumption remained acceptable. But if he fully revealed his true form and held multiple reflections in himself at the same time, the costs became too great.
It was then that the clones could find a new purpose — to become external mana reservoirs that nourish his true body.
Ned had a lot of questions about his new uniform, but he didn’t have time for that right now.
His opponent surpassed all his previous tactics and techniques, starting to slow down the pace of his clone.
Ned’s wide smile of Madness played on his face, and the ring of Madness Flames behind his back began to spin wildly, making a hum.
His opponent, although he noticed the sudden changes in his opponent’s behavior, did not try to interfere with him, completely focusing on trying to deal with his reflection.
Ned was kind of grateful to him for that.
However, since “Conquest” depended on the outcome of this duel, he wasn’t going to fight fair one-on-one.
The heat emitted from the fusion of the fire element and the energy of madness began to melt the ice around him.
Frostborn, noticing the explosion of Ned’s fire element, was momentarily distracted, and Ned’s clone took this opportunity to strike.
However, Frostborn easily dodged the attack. Ned’s clone had anticipated this and rushed forward, aiming to engage in close combat.
Sensing the opponent’s intent, Frostborn quickly retreated, trying to increase the distance, but at that moment Ned himself entered the fray.
Noticing Ned’s movements, Frostborn realized that he couldn’t handle two opponents.
He quickly stepped back, and his cloudy white eyes lit up with a cold blue light. A single word escaped from his silent mouth:
“Freeze.”
At the same moment, all the icy energy in the cave seemed to come alive, responding to his command. The frosty air thickened.
Bam!
Ned and his clone seemed to have crashed into an invisible wall, and the space around them seemed to solidify, turning into invisible fetters. Lines of frost appeared on their bodies, and ice chains grew with a bang under their feet, biting not only into flesh, but also into space itself.
Ned’s clone froze first.
His movement stopped in mid-stride, as if an invisible hand had grabbed him by the throat, closed his mouth, and pinned him to the spot, making it impossible to use the Power of Words. Ice was rapidly covering his arms, legs, and shoulders, as if trying to completely suppress him.
Crackle! Crackle! Crackle!
The ring of Madness Flames continued to spin behind Ned. At first, it moved more slowly, as if it was also obeying orders, but then its pinkish-purple light flashed brighter.
Crackle! Crackle! Crackle!
The invisible shackles around him trembled.
Flames and madness began to destroy the icy order from within. The space around Ned was covered with thin cracks. Tongues of pink-purple fire shot out from these cracks, and every step he took was accompanied by the dull sound of ice breaking.
Frostborn’s face changed for the first time.
His “word” worked.
It really stopped the clone and bound Ned himself.
But it wasn’t enough.
Ned slowly lifted his foot.
The space beneath her cracked.
He took a step forward.
The ice shackles exploded into fragments, but immediately began to recover, clinging to him again. The icy energy of the cave tried to hold him in place, but the flames of madness burned these chains faster than they could close.
Frostborn did not give up. His lips were closed, but the spoken word still sounded in the air:
“Freeze.”
The icy energy, obeying his command, created shackles around Ned over and over again. They wrapped around his arms, legs, shoulders, and the space itself, as if trying to hold him in place. But every time the ring of Madness Flames behind Ned’s back took a new turn, the shackles began to crack.
And with them, something was changing in Frostborn itself. His skin was losing its former icy luster, and his white hair was fading, turning gray with frost.
Frostborn’s face paled sharply. A thin trickle of blood flowed out from the corner of his lips, instantly freezing on his chin.
But the word did not disappear.
On the contrary, it became heavier.
The ice shackles around Ned tightened with renewed force, as if the cave itself was trying to crush him. The Ring of Madness Flames slowed down and began to fade. Ned quickly exhausted his mana reserves.
Ned looked at his clone and dispelled it. The clone disappeared, and the rest of his mana returned back to Ned. Having received new fuel, the Ring of Madness Flames flared up with renewed vigor, starting to hum and accelerate again.
Almost frozen, Ned took another step.
With the crunch of breaking space.
The Frostborn watching the duel fell silent, and the cave was filled only with the crackling of ice and the buzzing of the ring of Madness Flames.
Ned’s every step was a blow not only to the shackles, but also to Frostborn.
He was getting weaker by the moment. His breathing became ragged, and the frost around him lost its former purity and power. It seemed as if the very life energy was leaving his body, as if it were turning into fuel for a single command:
“Freeze.”
Frostborn realized that he was no longer able to contain Ned. But if he lets go of the word, it’s all over in an instant. So he kept paying.
With his power.
With his body.
With his time.
Finally, Frostborn was the first to exhaust his strength and collapsed to the ground. With his fall, the Power of Words disappeared, and Ned, freed from the icy captivity, was next to him.
The outcome was a foregone conclusion, and Ned saw no point in finishing off a worthy opponent who had already lost.
