Chapter 1291: The Space of a Thousand Shores

Chapter 1291: The Space of a Thousand Shores

Idan was standing on a small wooden pier. Ahead stretched the surface of an unfamiliar body of water, over which the fog slowly crept.

The fishing rod was still in his hands.

He looked at his fingers, then at the water.

“What the…”

There was a soft splash nearby.

He turned his head.

A few dozen paces away, a man was sitting and leisurely spinning a reel. There were other piers a little further away. Some were empty, the rest were also occupied by fishermen.

Everyone had a fishing rod similar to his own.

The nearest fisherman glanced at Idan.

“The first time?”

Idan hesitated for a moment before nodding.

“Then don’t stand so close to the edge.”

Idan involuntarily looked down and obediently stepped back.

“And don’t stand here, go register,” the fisherman added, without even looking in his direction. He picked up the bottle and, without taking his eyes off the float, took a sip.

“Register?”— Idan looked around the shore. A small wooden building caught his attention.

After standing for a while longer and looking around, Idan, not quite understanding where he was, headed towards the building. Everything around him seemed familiar and unfamiliar at the same time.

Up close, the building resembled a shopping pavilion. A young girl in a straw hat with sea-green hair was sleeping behind the counter, leaning on her hands.

Without disturbing the sleeping girl, he carefully examined the assortment of the store. Baits, fishing rods for rent, nets, hooks, fishing lines — everything related to fishing could be found here.

When Idan was studying the baits, his gaze was attracted by a strange creature with a large head resembling a lizard. It stared at him intently with its small blue eyes, without blinking.

Then the creature turned towards the sleeping girl and spat out a stream of water in her face.

“Uaaaaaa!” she screamed, waking up abruptly, and almost fell off her chair.

The stream of water knocked her straw hat off her head, and it fell behind the counter.

“Plop! Damn it!” the girl exclaimed, addressing the creature, not noticing Idan. “How many times have I asked you not to spit on me!”

The creature tilted its head, and its cheeks puffed out slightly.

“No! Stop!” the girl was frightened, covering herself with her hands and stepping back.

The creature’s long tail lifted, and it pointed it at Idan.

Only then did the girl notice his presence.

She stood motionless like a statue, and as soon as Idan smiled his usual smile, she quickly hid behind the counter.

A rustle. A rustle.

Idan’s smile froze, and he heard rustling coming from behind the counter.

He turned to the creature, who was watching him with interest.

Soon, the girl reappeared from behind the counter with a warm smile on her face, quickly tidying herself up.

“Welcome to the Space of a Thousand Shores!”

“The Space of a Thousand Shores?”— Idan tilted his head to the side.

“Oh! Is this your first time here?” the girl was surprised and, without waiting for at least a nod from him, added: “It’s rare to meet newcomers here these days.”

“This Is The Space Of A Thousand Shores. People come here to fish and relax,” the girl explained, nodding towards the water. “Someone is looking for a good catch, but for someone it’s enough to sit on the shore in silence. It’s up to everyone here to decide how to spend their time.”

She turned her gaze to the fishing rod in Idan’s hands.

“Since this is your first time here, you need to be registered. Give me your fishing rod.”

Idan looked at the fishing rod in his hands and then handed it to the girl.

She took the rod with tremulous care, and her eyes suddenly widened.

“This is…” she said, looking from the fishing rod to Idan.

“This is a very old model,” she said with a tremor in her voice, looking down.

“Really?” said Idan doubtfully. It seemed to him that she was surprised not so much by the condition of the fishing rod as by the fact that she seemed to recognize it.

“Yes, it’s very old, but it’s reliable,” she said with a warm smile, regaining her composure.

From under the counter, she took out a tablet-like device and began quickly entering data.

“Your name?” she asked, looking up from the screen. “This is for registration. It doesn’t matter if it’s real or fictional. But keep in mind, everyone will address you by whatever name you choose.”

“Idan,” Idan replied without thinking.

“Idan? Hmm… okay,” she wrote down his name on the tablet.

“Do you have any experience in fishing?” she asked.

“I know what it’s like, but I don’t have any personal experience,” Idan admitted honestly. He was a city guy and had never gone fishing before.

“A complete beginner, huh?” the girl chuckled.

“Okay, that completes the registration,” she put the tablet aside.

She looked at him with a slight smile, and then turned her eyes to Flop.

“Plop, get out the standard beginner gear.”

The creature dived behind the counter, and at the same moment there was a noise of objects being sorted.

Meanwhile, the girl pulled out a brochure and handed it to Idan.

“This is a summary of the Misty Lake. Here you will find everything you need to know about this place,” she said. “Oh yes, my personal advice is: don’t get too close to the edge of the pier. Besides the fish, there are “locals” who can drag you under the water.”

Idan felt a shudder run through his body at her advice.

Knock! Knock! Knock!

Several objects appeared in front of Idan one after another.

A small folding chair, a container for caught fish, some standard baits and an ordinary water bottle.

“All abilities and spatial storage are unavailable,” the girl said with a smile. — “If you need to drink, have a snack, or rent other equipment, you can purchase it all here for System Points.”

Idan lowered his gaze and checked his spatial ring. It was there, but he couldn’t get anything out of it. Here, all his rings became just jewelry.

“The standard time for everyone is three o’clock,” the girl continued and wished with a warm smile: “Have a good fishing trip and have a pleasant stay!”
