Chapter 773: WHO IS SCARLETT?
Chapter 773: WHO IS SCARLETT?
The moment I heard that name I felt a strange spasm in my head.
An eerie feeling and soon my ears began to pierce.
As though something was screaming loud straight into my ears.
I placed my hands against my ears and tried to suppress the feeling.
My body began to tremble and a gnawing feeling began to erupt through my body.
The piercing screeching voice went on and I tried my best to suppress.
I began to howl in pain as I bent down.
I could feel my mother’s hands against my shoulder, trying to shake me.
“Ruby! Ruby!” I heard her voice call out.
But it seemed as though she was calling me from miles and miles away.
It felt like the moment I had been with the old woman, except it was worse.
Felt like my soul was being sucked out of my body.
“Ruby! Ruby!” Mother shook.
This time I could slowly feel her body better and it felt like her voice was getting closer to me.
“Ruby!” She urged.
I jolted up immediately.
I looked at mother and saw she was fixed holding my arm.
“Honey. Honey are you okay?” She asked me help me sit up.
I looked around, my view still foggy and confusing.
I was on the floor.
How did I get to the floor.
“Are you okay?” Mother asked me as she gently rubbed my hair.
I was short for words.
I tucked my hair behind my ears.
“Can you get up?” She asked as she proceeded to help me rise to my feet.
I nodded and she helped me up.
I was assisted to a chair in our room before mother rushed away.
I massaged my temple as I wondered what the hell had just happened.
What was happening to my body?
What was happened to me?
Mother brought me a cup of hot tea.
I instantly knew what it was.
White willow tea.
It was mother’s go to whenever anyone was down.
It always refreshed my body when I had it.
I sipped some of it, but it didn’t make me feel any better.
Mother was hovering around anxiously.
Once I was done with the tea she took the cup away.
“Honey what happened?” She asked me.
I looked down at her closely. “Who is Scarlett?”
She paused and for a second I saw a flash of worry and instant terror.
But it was gone the moment it had come.
“Scarlett?” Mother said confused. “Who is Scarlett.”
I frowned. “I heard you say Scarlett.”
Mother looked genuinely lost. “No I didn’t say anything like that.”
I was confused.
I was sure I had heard her say that.
“Yes. Right after you said you were protecting me.” I emphasized.
She shook her head. “No I think it’s just your head.”
I wanted to press on the matter but then it occurred to me that she was probably right.
I had perhaps imagined only hearing it.
After all I had hallucinated drowning and fire and a strange room I had never been.
I rubbed my forehead and nodded.
“I think you’re right.” I nodded in agreement.
I leaned back in the chair as the tea slowly did its magic.
Once I was fine I swallowed and stood up.
“Ruby look.” Mother began. “I didn’t mean to use those words on you. I was just”
She sighed heavily.
“I just want to see you protected.” She explained.
Mother’s words had been extremely hurtful but I understood where she was coming from.
Being Aiden’s hand maiden only exposed me to the danger of showing my secret.
If only she knew that Aiden had already caught me red handed healing a bird.
He already smelled something aloof
“Look.” She said quickly as she came to my side.
She squat before me and held my hands. “How about we just leave here?”
I blinked in disbelief. “What?”
“Yes.” She nodded. “We just move and start life afresh. Somewhere where no one knows us.”
This was my childhood home.
This was our pack.
How could mother simply say we up and left.
“I can’t run away from here. This is our home. What about our debt? Father?” I asked.
She nodded her head. “A home is where you make it. I’ll sell off everything and try to pay off his debt. We would move on.”
“I’m not going to run away.” I shook my head. “Moreover the pack would have a warrant on our head. It would seem suspicious if we just ran away.”
Mother sighed and shook her head. “I am doing what’s best for you.”
I sighed heavily.
“Okay fine. Why don’t you turn down the offer.” Mother explained. “You haven’t shifted yet. You don’t have any much direct obligation to the pack. So he won’t have much of a hold on you. I’ll also go speak to myself.”
I shook my head. “No mother. I can’t.”
She frowned. “You actually think you can be his mate? That he would choose you? My love I thought you to be wiser. Men like him would only use women like us. You need to know this.”
“I’m not in love tub him or anything. I don’t even like him.” I said quickly.
I couldn’t tell mother the reason why Aiden had been able to coerce me into taking up the offer.
She would blow the whole situation.
With the way she had simply brought it up.
So carelessly without anything to rethink.
She sounded as though it was something she had done before.
And then it hit me.
“Mother what did Martha mean by we were outsiders? And this pack isn’t our home?” I asked.
Had we come from another pack and settled here?
Was that perhaps why regardless of this always been my home I had always felt like a stranger.
Mother paused for a second and then shook her head. “It’s nothing. Just the ramblings of an angry woman.”
Bug something deep within me told me she was not being truthful.
Something told me my mother was lying.
