Chapter 779: SOFTENED HEART
Chapter 779: SOFTENED HEART
AIDEN’S POV
It had happened so fast.
Old Bart had come from nowhere and caused a commotion.
Before Aiden could have taken how serious the situation could get, he had felt a strange air.
Something was wrong.
He felt her pain before he heard it.
The horse started neighing violently and she was thrown off instantly.
Aiden came off his horse at that precise moment.
As he pushed past the wolves who were trying to go after Old Bart.
He saw Old Bart was hung over Ruby while she seemed frightened trying her best to move away from him.
He growled so loudly, all the wolves froze by his command.
Old Bart himself stiffened before attacking her.
With his arms already shifted, Aiden slapped off Old Bart away from Ruby so hard Old Bart went screaming in the air.
Aiden didn’t care to see what happened to Old Bart.
He hurriedly went down to Ruby.
“Are you okay?” He asked.
She looked up at him fear written in her face.
For someone like her who was so stubborn and proud, hardly ever broke character.
She looked terrified.
He was shocked to see she was capable of such level of fear and he felt his heart break.
He saw the tears gather in her eyes.
He wanted to throw his arms around her and comfort her, but he immediately restrained himself.
“Are you okay?” He asked more softly.
She blinked and seemed to come back to reality.
She looked around and then nodded slightly. “I think so.”
She tried to get up but then she groaned.
He immediately reached out to her.
“I think.” She said softly. “I think I hurt my leg.”
She looked so helpless.
For someone reason or the other he felt an overwhelming need to save her.
To protect her.
He wasn’t used to helping people.
Frankly, he didn’t care about anyone and he had convinced himself that she was the worst of the worst.
But right now he wanted to save her.
Without waiting for her approval he put his hands around her waist.
“What are you doing?” He heard her protest.
But she was already in his arms in a second.
He ignored her and turned around to face his horse.
It was at that moment he finally saw what had happened to Old Bart.
Pieces of his body were scattered across the rocks while the other pieces were splattered on the floor.
His blood led trails all over.
“I’m okay.” She protested as she shifted in his arms. “I can ride my horse fine.”
He ignored her and led her to his horse.
He hoisted her on the horse gently and in the blink of an eye he was right behind her.
He wrapped his hands around her arms while he took the reins of the horse before she began riding off
She didn’t complain anymore.
She remained stiff in his arms until about thirty minutes into the journey he felt her ease into his arms.
She was asleep.
He felt himself get hard but he tried his best to suppress that.
He didn’t need that right now.
He wondered how the hell Old Bart had come around the caves again.
He had explicitly asked for no interruption and yet he had acted like a mad man, going after Ruby.
A crazy old man who had finally met a bizarre end.
Aiden rode on in silence while Ruby remained sleeping in his arms.
He felt his heart soften towards her.
Why was a pauper like her.
An absolute no one have the ability to control his emotions.
It baffled him.
He was used to not caring about anyone.
Going around with his duties.
Even the thought of having a mate had never really appealed to him.
If he was ever going to have one, it would be one his parents had chosen for him.
He loved fucking but he never cared deeply for any woman.
His father had taught him that.
And yet here he was with the most insane woman he had ever met, having her in his arms.
It was unbelievable and absurd.
Eventually they got to the pack house but it was already dark.
She was still very much sound asleep.
A Beta hurried to his side to help him bring her down but Aiden came down himself with her safely tucked his arm.
He carried her softly as all the pack members who were present watched.
He didn’t care.
He went up the stairs of the pack house to the entrance where none other than Bale hurried in.
Bale stopped in his tracks the moment he saw them.
He saw his brother’s face go red when he looked down at Ruby in his arms.
“What did you do to her?” Bale asked defensively.
“Hold it.” Aiden said without breaking pace. “I don’t have the time for you right now.”
“If anything happens to her-
Bale began to threaten but Aiden never bothered to hear whatever his brother had to say.
Aiden took her up the steps and found himself at the door of the healer’s quarters.
He opened the door and saw her mother.
She jumped up immediately.
“Ruby!” She said in alarm as she hurried over to them.
She had tears already in her eyes and then she looked up at him with the anger of a protective mother.
“She is fine.” Aiden whispered. “Just tired and might have a bruised leg.”
Why the hell was he whispering?
Why should he care if she woke up or not.
She was affecting his emotions and he didn’t like it.
He needed to get the hell out of here.
He looked around the room and found a bed.
He took her to it and lay her down.
“I’ll see her tomorrow.” Aiden said after an uncomfortable minute of saying nothing.
He walked to the door and was about to shut it.
“Thank you.” He heard her mother say behind.
For some reason Aiden felt his heart go lighter.
