Chapter 210: Hailstorm
Chapter 210: Hailstorm
To avoid heatstroke, welfare distribution is divided into two time slots, from five to seven in the morning, and from seven to nine in the evening.
Huo Yishen’s team sets off in the morning. They wake up at around three in the morning. Jiang Ning comforts the dog while holding fried fish, “Coke, the responsibility of guarding the house is entrusted to you. Wait for us to come back.”
The dog whimpers but eventually agrees firmly.
With their bags on their backs and buckets in hand, when the three of them reach the gate, the residents who set off in the morning have all arrived. There are over seventy people in total, including both the elderly and children.
Initially, they were still worried, but upon seeing Huo Yishen and Jiang Ning, they felt reassured, as if they had taken a heart-stabilizing pill.
He Tianming calls out the names to ensure everyone is present before they set off.
After two years of surviving in the apocalypse, nobody is pretentious. They use flashlights to navigate in the dark.
They have no complaints, especially since Huo Yishen has a car, but now they are walking.
The community committee is a bit far away. When they arrive at four-thirty, they are surprised to find many people already waiting in line.
After organizing the queue, Jiang Ning and her companions line up at another window to update their residency information.
At five o’clock, the welfare distribution starts on time. There are police officers maintaining order on the scene. Despite the large crowd, there is no chaos.
Thirsty and hungry to the point that their skin and bones, who would have the energy to cause trouble?
Aoyuan didn’t arrive early; they’ve been waiting for an hour and still haven’t been served.
By six o’clock, the sky is already bright, and people are getting anxious, hoping to receive their supplies before the sun gets too intense.
One must know that the scorching sun is not only hot but also quite poisonous. It quickly reddens and itches the skin; even a brief exposure can lead to sunburn, and severe cases can cause blisters. Which can easily lead to infections.
Jiang Ning calculates that they’ll probably reach their turn in about ten minutes.
They estimate they’ll be able to return before eight o’clock, which is relatively ideal.
However, she feels something odd today. Normally, the eastern sky would already be bright, but today it feels gloomier, and the air is becoming increasingly stifling.
Just as she is about to speak to Huo Yishen, a sudden urgent noise breaks out.
“Puff, puff, puff, thud, thud, thud…”
Immediately after, cries of horror fill the air, and the crowd instantly panics.
Before Jiang Ning can react, she suddenly feels a sharp pain in her shoulder…
“Run! It’s hail!”
Huo Yishen shouts loudly, pulling Jiang Ning towards the building of the community committee.
Countless hailstones fall from the sky, some the size of pigeon eggs, chicken eggs, or even as large as fists…
In the chaos, Doudou steps on a hailstone and falls to the ground.
Luckily, Huo Yishen is holding her by the arm; otherwise, she would have been trampled once she fell.
He carries his sister and pushes Jiang Ning forward with all his strength.
As they flee, the crowd rushes desperately towards the community committee, quickly filling it to capacity.
The queue where Huoyishen is located isn’t particularly far away, and his reaction speed is exceptionally fast, so they manage to squeeze in quickly.
The office of the community committee is not large, and those who are at the back of the line or react slowly can’t even get in.
Unable to get in but still trying, people squeeze in recklessly, soon packing the place so tightly that some children start crying in fear.
There are shouts, shoves, people being trampled, and amidst the chaos, some are trying to grab water and food supplies.
Those who can’t get in have to use their bags or buckets of water as protection, huddling under nearby eaves or any cover they can find.
The hail came without warning, and many survivors were hit. Those who were injured on their bodies were fine, some were hit on the head and bleeding, and some were hit on the spot by fist-sized hailstones and fell directly to the ground and never got up again, still holding the bucket of water tightly in their hands.
Once inside the community committee office, Huo Yishen doesn’t stop; he pushes through the crowded room towards the inner part.
The innermost room is a restroom, smelling strongly of disinfectant. He kicks open the adjacent storage room.
The storage room is very small, filled with mops, brooms, and other miscellaneous items, barely accommodating three people.
Jiang Ning’s shoulder is throbbing with pain. Just as she’s about to grit her teeth and check it, she notices Doudou’s forehead bleeding profusely.
The blood has already dripped onto her face.
“Doudou,” Jiang Ning is shocked, “Where are you hurt?”
Doudou reaches up to touch it, her hand was covered in blood.
Her forehead is injured, and the pain is so intense that she forgets to cry.
Big brother told her not to cry, that tears are useless.
Huo Yishen looked back and lowered his eyes, his pupils suddenly dilated.
Jiang Ning can’t afford to focus on her shoulder’s excruciating pain; she hurriedly digs into her bag and takes out the first aid kit from her space, using medical cotton to help stop the bleeding.
Stopping the bleeding, disinfecting, bandaging…
Doudou feels dizzy, “Brother, I feel dizzy.”
Huo Yishen holds her tightly, anxiously asking, “Anning, how’s Doudou’s injury?”
Without medical equipment to examine, Jiang Ning doesn’t know the actual situation. If it’s just a concussion, it’s not too bad; as long as they take care of the wound and rest slowly, she can recover. But if it’s a brain hemorrhage or fluid accumulation, that would be troublesome.
Seeing Huo Yishen’s anxious expression, Jiang Ning dares not speak the worst outcome. “It might be a concussion. Let’s stop the bleeding first and then see.”
The natural disaster has just begun. Although the hospital’s medicine quickly ran out, many doctors are still holding their posts, providing treatment even if they can’t prescribe medicine.
But there are too many patients, and some families of the severely ill or those lacking medicine have become extremely desperate. They believe that the hospital is hoarding medicine and are only willing to give it to the wealthy or those with connections, or those who think the doctors have a bad attitude. This has led to quite a few violent incidents.
Doctors are also ordinary people; many have died in various disasters. Those who have the means choose to go to the base.
So, the hospital has completely closed its doors.
Even if it’s open, those instruments can no longer function.
Jiang Ning hopes it’s not the worst-case scenario, fearing that Huo Yishen won’t be able to bear it.
“Doudou, how do you feel?”
Doudou lies in his brother’s arms, “Sister, I’m in so much pain, and I feel like vomiting.”
Jiang Ning comforts her, “You’re injured, but you’ll be fine. Don’t be afraid.”
Huoyishen looks at her, “Are you injured too?”
Jiang Ning nods, pressing her swollen shoulder, taking out two ice packs from her backpack and wrapping them in towels to apply ice.
Huo Yishen takes the ice pack and applies it to Doudou’s forehead, “Don’t be afraid.”
Suddenly, there’s a knock on the door of the storage room, “Who’s in there? Do you have medicine? I smell it. Hurry up and open the door, please give me some medicine, I’m injured too.”
Huo Yishen uses his body to block the door, “You smelled it wrong, we don’t have any medicine.”
“Why won’t you give me medicine if you have it?” The man keeps knocking on the door, his tone becoming agitated, “I’ve lost a lot of blood. If I don’t stop the bleeding and bandage it, I’ll die.”
He sees that pushing doesn’t work, so he kicks the door with force and even shouts loudly, “There are people inside with medicine, but they won’t give it to me.”
Jiang Ning does have medicine, but there are quite a few injured people. Even if she gives it all, how many lives can she save?
If she gives it to them, what about themselves? Just wait to die?
Doudou covers her forehead, “Brother, I’m scared.”
“Don’t worry, brother will protect you.”
“I… I think I saw Mom and Dad.”
Huo Yishen’s face changes drastically, “No, Mom and Dad are dead, but you won’t die. Brother won’t let you die.”
As he speaks, he looks anxiously at Jiang Ning.
Jiang Ning has no choice either, “Doudou, don’t think too much, and don’t sleep, try to stay awake.”
With that, she takes out a piece of dried tangerine peel from her bag, pinches a small piece and stuffs it into Doudou’s mouth, “Try this, it’s delicious.”
“It’s so sweet.”
“Sister will let you eat delicious food every day in the future. Don’t fall asleep; stay with brother and sister forever. Coke is still waiting for us to go back.”
