Chapter 211: Unconscious
Chapter 211: Unconscious
Doudou chewed on the dried tangerine peel. “I miss Mom and Dad, but I don’t want to leave my Brother and Sister.”
Huo Yishen held her. “Be good, listen to your Sister, stay awake, and don’t fall asleep.”
The commotion outside the door grew louder as people banged and kicked it, their faces twisted in anger as if there were dangerous criminals inside that had to be eradicated.
Even though Huo Yishen used his body to block the door, it was still being pounded.
Patients with concussions are most afraid of shaking, and at this rate, the door wouldn’t hold much longer.
Jiang Ning picked up Doudou and placed her on the ground. She looked through the small window on the opposite door and saw the ground outside covered in dense hail, which was beginning to lessen.
Hail typically lasts for 2 to 10 minutes, rarely more than 30. About 20 minutes had passed since it started, and it seemed it would soon stop.
The shouting outside grew fiercer, and the door would eventually break. Jiang Ning didn’t hesitate. She grabbed a few empty medicine bottles, and put them in a bag, then each wore a mask.
Jiang Ning held Doudou, protecting her head with her hand.
Just as a few angry men were about to continue kicking, the door suddenly opened, causing them to nearly fall over.
They looked up to see cold eyes and the black muzzle of a gun.
Huo Yishen pressed the gun to the man’s head, suppressing his anger. “Kick it one more time!”
The man’s head wasn’t injured at all. Startled by Huo Yishen’s fierce gaze, he stammered, “I-I’m hurt, I just wanted some medicine, I don’t mean any harm. ”
Huo Yishen stepped forward, and the man retreated step by step. “D-don’t do anything rash, there are police here.”
People around started clamoring, “We’re all hurt, please give us some medicine.”
“The medicine is here, but there’s not much left.” Jiang Ning raised the bag in her hand and handed it to the leader. “If you want it, take it from him.”
After handing it over, she quickly left with Doudou.
With Huo Yishen holding a gun, no one dared to stop them. A lot of them even wants to stay away to avoid trouble.
The man got the medicine but before he could be happy, someone jumped at him to snatch it.
Medicine was more precious than water and food and sometimes a single pill could save a life.
Seeing him get the medicine, many others were envious.
The first one grabbed it, and soon the second one followed, and they all rushed over.
“Don’t grab it, damn it, don’t grab it, the medicine is mine…”
The man’s angry voice was drowned in the crowd.
Squeezing out of the crowded hall, the hail outside had almost stopped, with only occasional small pieces falling.
Many survivors couldn’t wait; they ran out with buckets to collect it.
The hot weather melted the hail quickly, and despite the danger, they raced against time. Even those who were injured and bleeding from their foreheads ignored it. They frantically fill their buckets with hail.
“Water, finally there’s water.”
Ignoring the dirt on the hail, they picked it up and stuffed it into their mouths.
Yes, after a long drought, who cared about injuries? All they thought about was that water meant life.
Some plastic buckets were smashed, causing people to nearly cry in frustration. They used cloth bags to plug the holes, desperately picking up hail.
Some lost their buckets in the chaos and, in desperation, tried to snatch others, leading to fights.
A few people lay on the community center’s playground, unclear if they were killed by hail or trampled in the chaos.
The apocalypse is this cruel. Just a moment ago, people were happily lining up early to receive holiday benefits, thinking that with food and water, they could continue to survive. But no one expected the next moment to be a natural disaster, killing them on the spot.
They say the Mid-Autumn Festival is a time for reunion, but they died the day before.
However, survival is hard for everyone; no one has the time to mourn the dead.
Collecting more hail means living a few more days.
They could barely keep themselves alive; how could they worry about others?
Sometimes, death is a relief!
“Police, he has a gun!” someone suddenly shouted from the crowd behind them. “Someone here has a gun!”
Just as Huo Yishen was about to leave, the police and security patrol rushed over. “Stop.”
They surrounded the three of them, warning, “Carrying a gun is illegal.”
Huo Yishen waved the gun in his hand. “A toy gun is illegal too?”
Yes, Jiang Ning had given him a highly realistic toy gun.
The police took a few steps forward, confirming it was a toy gun, and sighed in relief but were still worried they might use it for robbery or intimidation. “This thing is dangerous; we have to confiscate it.”
“Is it really dangerous?” Jiang Ning retorted. “It’s plastic, yet it helped us survive nine robbery attempts, each time escaping death. And just now, without it, we wouldn’t have even had the chance to get out.”
“Those people were unarmed but vicious, like ferocious tigers out of their cages, all rushing to grab medicine, and you didn’t make it in time to save us.”
“Without it, we wouldn’t have survived today, so I can’t give it to you.”
The police hesitated, then said, “Don’t use it against good people.”
“Don’t worry, we still have our humanity.”
The police and security patrol moved a little further away to break up the fighting people.
“Comrade Huo.” Yang Weimin, the vice captain of the security team, ran over. “Are you all okay?”
Jiang Ning looked down at Doudou and realized she was unconscious. Her face changed immediately. “Doudou is hurt; we need to find a doctor immediately. You gather the team and take them back.”
“Okay, you guys hurry and find a doctor. Be safe on the way.”
Huo Yishen took Doudou and hurried out.
Jiang Ning quickly ran up. “Don’t rush, hold Doudou steady, don’t shake her.”
Huo Yishen’s eyes turned red. “Anning, what do we do now?”
For the first time, Jiang Ning saw him, who never flinched at life and death, so helpless and flustered. Her heart ached with urgency and sorrow.
She knew he chose a different path in this second chance just to keep Doudou alive.
Without his sister, he would have unhesitatingly walked the path of his previous life.
Doudou was his spiritual support; if anything happened to her, he would suffer for a lifetime.
“Don’t worry, let’s find a place with no people and enter the space.”
They quickly left the community center, turned two streets to ensure no one was around, and then entered an abandoned shop, using it as a cover to enter the space.
The space had a good temperature and environment. Huo Yishen placed Doudou on the sofa.
Jiang Ning took out the stethoscope and hurriedly checked her.
Pulse, heartbeat, breathing, and pupils were all normal, but no one could be sure about the head injury.
Aside from waiting, there was no better solution.
