Chapter 214: Renovating The House
Chapter 214: Renovating The House
Jiang Ning took out her phone and recorded a video. She thought, who knows if she’ll live long enough to see the end of this catastrophe; this could be valuable footage.
Huo Yishen brought in a few more buckets of water. Jiang Ning reached out and tested it; finally, it wasn’t boiling water anymore.
But the temperature hadn’t dropped much.
The long-awaited downpour not only failed to cool the air but instead forced out the heat from the ground.
Jiang Ning looked at the pouring rain outside while sweating profusely.
This feeling was even more uncomfortable than just extreme heat.
Now she felt like a plate of marinated pork ribs, ready to be steamed in a steamer filled with hot steam for 15 minutes before serving.
Unable to bear it, she turned on the air conditioner to survive.
After washing her face, she wasn’t scalded by the boiling rain, but her face was still flushed.
Jiang Ning found a piece of expensive facial mask and applied it to her face, offering some to Huo Yishen, “Do you want some?”
Huo Yishen wasn’t interested in women’s facial masks. “No need.”
She lifted her head to look at his face. His thick skin seemed normal, without any redness.
She went back to her room and lay down and unknowingly fell asleep.
After some time passed, she suddenly heard Doudou’s laughter, “Rainbow, it’s a rainbow.”
Jiang Ning opened the window. The downpour had stopped, and a brilliant rainbow appeared in the sky.
The rainbow after the apocalypse rain was incredibly beautiful.
Jiang Ning couldn’t help but go to the large balcony and look at the rainbow hanging in the sky.
The sky was bright and clear, and the rainbow bridge emitted a charming light.
As long as you didn’t lower your head, ignoring the desolation and barrenness on the ground, did it look like the end of the world?
She took a few photos. Unexpectedly, Doudou hugged the dog and struck a pose, “Sister, include the rainbow in the picture.”
Solo photos, couple photos, and family portraits were all taken.
Huo Yishen didn’t slack off and collected a lot of rainwater for storage.
After taking a bath, Jiang Ning found Doudou sleeping on the sofa again. Huo Yishen couldn’t help but worry, “Anning, when will Doudou recover?”
After taking care of her for a few days, Doudou’s condition had improved a lot, but it was hard to say with a concussion. Some took a few days, some took months, and some even took years, with some having lifelong effects.
Not wanting him to worry too much, Jiang Ning comforted him, “She’s much better now. She only needs rest during this time.”
She planned to cook a pig brain and stew with Gastrodia Elata for Doudou.
Building 5 was far from the other buildings, and the soup she made was very light, so there was no smell when she closed the door.
Huo Yishen was proactive. When Jiang Ning mentioned renovating, he took action.
However, neither of them knew how to renovate.
Jiang Ning searched through the massive amount of information she had downloaded and successfully found books on building renovation.
Huo Yishen looked through the materials, “Do we need to tile?”
They had previously stocked up on a lot of tiles, but since they only lived in the house for a year and the materials couldn’t be recycled, Jiang Ning felt it wasn’t necessary, “Just use cement mortar to level it. What do you think?”
Huo Yishen had no objections, “Okay.”
First, mix sand and lime evenly, then level the ground, and finally apply fine cement mortar. The walls were smoothed with lime.
There was sand and lime upstairs, cement, lime, waterproof coating—all stored in the space. The renovation tools were also complete, such as mixing machines, trowels, spatulas, scrapers, and corner repair tools.
Every time she went to the trading street, Jiang Ning felt that she might need some tools in the future, so she would collect some. After two years, she had accumulated quite a few.
So, they started practicing from the small balcony.
Jiang Ning wanted to help, but Huo Yishen wouldn’t let her, “You’ve been tired from planting corn lately; I can handle these tasks.”
He didn’t want her to get dirty, and these tasks weren’t heavy, so he could practice.
Jiang Ning didn’t have talent in this area, so she didn’t mess things up, just adding a little water when mixing the materials.
After the heavy rain, they had a good reason not to go downstairs to fetch water, so they continued with the renovation at home.
Surprisingly, although they were just starting, Huo Yishen quickly gained experience. The floor was scraped and leveled exceptionally well, especially after applying the cement mortar. He used a steel trowel to press it flat and smooth, repeating the process three times until it shone like a mirror.
This was a test of perseverance. Jiang Ning admitted she didn’t have the patience or skill for it, so she brought out some food from storage to reward him.
Stir-fried crab, braised pork, braised pig’s trotters, broccoli with beef, and red wine.
“Here, you’ve worked hard.”
Recently, Jiang Ning read a relationship magazine that said men like it when they are being praised. So, she didn’t hesitate to praise, especially since his work was really impeccable.
Huo Yishen looked at her deeply and smiled.
Jiang Ning felt a bit embarrassed and quickly took a sip of wine.
After four or five days, the rough renovation of the house was finally completed.
Gray floors, white walls—it looked quite plain and simple, but in the apocalypse, it was already rare.
Huo Yishen also went to Building 4 to get some red bricks and built the stove in the kitchen.
Jiang Ning brought out some rice, flour, oil, and other provisions, as well as gas canisters, gas stoves, pots, pans, and utensils, just in case.
After completing all this, they held a housewarming ceremony.
After all, they weren’t lacking food and drink now. Even if they stayed at home doing nothing, they still needed something to do.
Jiang Ning took out their favorite dishes from storage, with small portions to avoid wasting food in the apocalypse.
After the housewarming meal, there would be a second round—barbecue and beer.
Doudou, eating octopus tentacles, rubbed his belly contentedly, “Brother and sister, I’m so happy.”
Others might be gnawing on sweet potato shoots, but she could eat so well because of her brother and sister.
“Woof!” The dog was not inferior, with shiny oil all over its mouth.
With the completion of the new home, they drank two more glasses in celebration.
After taking a shower, Jiang Ning sat on the bed, feeling a little tipsy.
Huo Yishen came in while drying his hair. He was wearing loose pajamas, and beneath the shorts. His muscle lines were smooth and beautiful, accumulating a strong explosive power.
Jiang Ning glanced at him and couldn’t help but glance again.
Sensing her gaze, Huo Yishen walked over and kissed her, then hoarsely said, “Is it okay?”
Jiang Ning didn’t speak but responded with action.
“Wait a moment.”
Huo Yishen suddenly pushed her away, closed and locked the door to prevent any sudden intrusions.
Leaving only the bedside lamp on, the figures intertwined in the dim light.
Huo Yishen leaned over, reached out to the bedside table, and took something.
Seeing what he had in his hand, Jiang Ning was surprised, “How did you have this?”
Huo Yishen explained, “When the typhoon came, I raided the pharmacy, thinking it could stop bleeding, store water, and keep warm, so I took it.”
At that time, he never thought he would use it for this purpose one day.
Jiang Ning frowned, “You’ve handed over all your other supplies, why keep this?”
Huo Yishen’s expression was unnatural, “I’m afraid you’d misunderstand.”
Jiang Ning pressed on, “How many do you have?”
She was talking too much which is ruining the mood.
Huo Yishen didn’t answer but lowered his head to seal her lips…
