The Beginning of Natural Disaster, I Won by Hoarding Tens of Billions of Supplies

Chapter 223: Search And Rescue Dogs

Chapter 223: Search And Rescue Dogs

Seeing her silence, He Tianming hurriedly explained, “The rescue team is voluntary, we won’t force anyone.”

Jiang Ning thought for a moment, “At 60 degrees Celsius, even with proper protection, normal people can’t withstand two hours under the sun. I wonder how Captain He plans to organize and arrange the rescue?”

“Based on voluntary principles, we need to protect ourselves while rescuing others. We’ll bring sunshades, and rescue team members can rest when tired. We can’t overexert ourselves just to save others.”

He Tianming already had a plan, “Once rescued, people can be sent to temporary shelters arranged by the city government.”

Jiang Ning was somewhat surprised; she didn’t expect his arrangements to be so rational and clear-headed, not disregarding the consequences for the sake of saving people.

“Willing members of the community, one person per household is enough. I don’t recommend more, after all, Aoyuan’s patrol team can’t afford to be short-staffed.”

In addition, there’s some bad news; the neighborhood’s well collapsed.

The well, dug by the old master, was well-located and well-crafted, so the collapse wasn’t very severe. But until it’s certain that aftershocks have ended, it’s risky to repair the well.

So, everyone should conserve water.

Luckily, He Tianming had been reminding everyone to conserve water from time to time, and he had managed to get a batch of water purification tablets through his connections.

He exchanged for sweet potatoes from each household, so everyone had water purification tablets on hand.

Though not many, it should be enough for a few days.

Jiang Ning spoke tactfully, “Captain He, your proposal is excellent. We’ll go back and check our situation and get back to you later.”

He Tianming hesitated, “Actually, I have an awkward request.”

“Go ahead.”

He Tianming’s gaze fell on Coke, “If you’re willing to participate, could you also bring it along?”

Jiang Ning frowned slightly.

“Well, dogs have a more sensitive sense of smell than humans. This earthquake had some early warnings, and there might be fewer survivors buried under rubble. But we don’t know the real situation. Searching without proper targeting wastes time and effort and may miss the golden rescue window. So, I want to ask the dog for help.”

Afraid of misunderstandings, He Tianming hastily explained, “My Dream is also participating, but only for search, not for digging or dangerous work.”

Since the natural disaster, those willing to give up food to raise dogs all treated them like family, and these little guys needed protection too.

Jiang Ning nodded, “I understand.”

Without further ado, the three humans and one dog returned to Building 5.

Back in Building 5, instead of rushing to go upstairs, they walked around the building.

The building was quite sturdy; such a strong earthquake and no cracks were found. However, there were tiles missing in the corridors, and some doors were loosened by the shaking which needs reinforcement.

Apartment 401 was tidy, and nothing was damaged during the earthquake.

Huo Yishen threw snacks and placed two of them aside to make it easier for Jiang Ning to take things out.

The rearrangement of the house was handed over to the two of them. Things like curtains and air conditioners were led by Huo Yishen, while Jiang Ning assisted.

After finishing lunch, celebrating their survival, they had boiled fish, braised pork, steamed meatballs, and fruit juice.

Sitting under the air conditioner, sweating from the spicy boiled fish, their suppressed moods dissipated.

After lunch, they had two plates of frozen watermelon, feeling extremely content.

Jiang Ning sat down and talked to Huo Yishen, “I won’t participate in the rescue, but you can decide for yourself.”

In her previous life, she didn’t receive anyone’s rescue, and the food she found was almost robbed. If she hadn’t fought desperately, she wouldn’t have been able to keep any supplies.

Not only did they want to steal food, but when they saw her alone, they had even more sinister thoughts…

“But, if you decide to go, while saving others, I hope you also consider that there’s still Doudou at home.”

Jiang Ning didn’t want to impose her thoughts on Huo Yishen. Love could bring people together, and lack of it could separate them, but she didn’t want him to feel oppressed while they were in love.

His choices were different from his past life, but his thoughts weren’t easily changed. Even though he wasn’t wearing that uniform anymore, his kindness never disappeared; he just had more principles and stance now.

Huo Yishen pulled Jiang Ning into his arms. “Anning, I want to participate, but no matter what, you and Doudou are the most important to me.”

“Woof!”

“Yes, and Coke too.”

Jiang Ning didn’t ask much from Huo Yishen, and it was the same for the dog. “Coke, do you want to go search with the instructor?”

The dog squatted in front of the two of them, as if contemplating something, then extended its paw to rest on Huo Yishen’s knee.

Knowing that Huo Yishen and the dog were going to participate, He Tianming was very pleased. “You guys rest up, we can probably gather more than 20 people and depart in the evening. Remember to bring a protective gear; it’s hot and sweating a lot, so adding some salt to the water can replenish our electrolytes.”

Though Jiang Ning didn’t participate, she still made preparations.

She added some salt to the boiled water and steamed some extra resilient potatoes and sweet potatoes, especially for Huo Yishen and the dog to eat during rest breaks.

The dog, used to having meat every day, looked dumbfounded. How come its treatment suddenly worsened?

Jiang Ning teased it by pulling its ear. “What? You still want to eat meat in front of people? Get lost!”

As for Huo Yishen, he understood more than she did. Jiang Ning didn’t have much to instruct him; she just said, “Take care of Coke and don’t let it overexert or get tired.”

The bulletproof vest was too heavy, so she gave the dog a stab-proof vest to prevent it from getting accidentally injured.

Then, she gave two sets of protective gloves to Huo Yishen, along with some self-defense first aid supplies.

In the evening, the Aoyuan rescue team assembled on time.

Jiang Ning didn’t go to see them off; she climbed to the 12th floor and used binoculars to watch as Huo Yishen took Coke to the gate.

The residents of the neighborhood gathered around them, curious, as if they were watching a performance. Some even thought it was a monkey show.

They might be tempted, but after all, these were dogs raised like gods. Even if they were really tempted by the meat, how many would dare to have crooked thoughts?

He Tianming also came, holding Dream.

Although Coke usually appeared indifferent, it was actually a thoroughbred police dog and remained calm and stable in front of outsiders.

On the other hand, Dream was extremely enthusiastic, spinning around Coke constantly, sniffing here and there.

Finally, Coke pressed Dream to the ground with a paw, rubbing against it several times until it calmed down.

The team set off, first searching nearby buildings and villages.

Although there were early warnings, not every village or neighborhood had responsible people, and many didn’t have radios. Some who knew about the warnings only cared about their own escape and didn’t bother to inform others.

So, despite the government’s early efforts, many survivors were still trapped.

Back in her room, Jiang Ning flipped through medical books but couldn’t concentrate.

With only her and Doudou, they had a simple dinner of plain noodles.

Doudou got bored. “Sister, when will Brother and Coke come back?”

“I’m not sure they’re probably do the rescue until dawn.”

Doudou was equally disciplined; after washing the dishes and doing her homework, she exercised on her own.

Even though Jiang Ning lay still, her mind was working in the dark soil garden.

She needed to find something to occupy herself, or time would pass incredibly slowly.

She woke up intermittently throughout the night, but Huo Yishen still hadn’t returned.

Around five o’clock, there was some commotion downstairs, which instantly put Jiang Ning on alert…
