Chapter 225: Who Will Extend A Helping Hand?
Chapter 225: Who Will Extend A Helping Hand?
People like Qin Chuan wouldn’t come out under the scorching sun unless it’s an urgent matter, Jiang Ning thought as Qin Chuan approached.
“It’s not convenient to talk at the gate,” Qin Chuan said, stomping out his cigarette and walking to the side. “I need to procure medicine and water urgently. Do you have a way?”
“Brother Qin , you know how precious medicine is. It’s difficult to get even a few lifesaving pills,” Jiang Ning replied.
“I understand,” Qin Chuan explained. “This earthquake wasn’t sudden. It was the official rescue team that risked their lives to save my son. He got trapped under the rubble.”
Qin Chuan was always grateful and reciprocative. Moreover, the official rescue efforts were lacking in medical supplies, and many survivors rescued at great risk ended up waiting to die due to the shortage of medicine.
“So many survivors, even if you donate medicine, how many lives can you save?” Jiang Ning’s heart felt heavy.
What Jiang Ning and Huo Yishen stored up would barely make a difference. With decades ahead and countless disasters looming, what hope did they have?
Accidents like Doudou getting concussed by hail could happen anytime. By giving up their chance at life, who would extend a helping hand in a life-or-death situation?
Having crawled through the apocalypse for over two years, Qin Chuan had seen all kinds of survivors. When people reached the end of their rope, driven by the instinct to survive, they would reveal their darker sides.
That’s why he empathized with the earthquake victims. “I donated to the rescue team as a way of repaying them for saving my son.”
Many of them were injured during the rescue efforts and faced the dilemma of scarce medical supplies, prompting him to consider donating a batch of medicine.
Jiang Ning sighed. “My ex-boss went to work in the coal mines, and his medicine was confiscated long ago.”
“Alright, I’ll think of another way for the medicine. Can you arrange for water?” Qin Chuan inquired.
Besides medicine, the lack of water was also a leading cause of heatstroke deaths.
Jiang Ning fell silent for a moment before speaking. “I’ll figure out a way to get you a truckload of water, and you can donate it specifically.”
As for who would ultimately receive the water, that was uncertain. All they could do was ensure their intentions were good.
Qinchuan breathed a sigh of relief. “Alright, what do you need in return?”
“The water quality isn’t as good as before, but it’s clean enough to drink once boiled.”
Jiang Ning didn’t discuss trading supplies. “Consider it my personal anonymous donation. If the relevant authorities inquire, you can’t reveal my involvement.”
Qin Chuan was puzzled. After a moment, he said, “The earthquake not only destroyed buildings but also caused most wells to collapse. Do you know how precious water is now?”
So many people were driven mad by thirst. They even resort to drinking their own urine.
Of course, Jiang Ning knew. A truckload of water, 20 tons, could save many lives; otherwise, she wouldn’t have donated it.
“I’ve also received official assistance before. This water is my way of giving back.”
After a moment of thought, Qin Chuan lowered his voice. “Do you know about the reconstruction efforts after the disaster?”
Jiang Ning shook her head.
Qin Chuan was involved in lucrative business dealings and had access to information. “The authorities knew about the earthquake early on. They started collecting steel, factory buildings, and other materials as soon as the floods receded.
They’ve already made promises to willing donors, converting confiscated assets into points. These points can be used for future material supplies and deducted during reconstruction, giving them priority.
The official reconstruction plan hasn’t been announced yet, but acts like donating materials or rescuing people during the disaster will be taken into account for point calculation.
Business dealings might be cunning, but Qin Chuan valued loyalty. Moreover, he remembered Jiang Ning’s lifesaving favor. “Water is the most needed commodity now. If you donate it in your own name, you can earn a lot of points.”
Jiang Ning chuckled, “That’s just how I am. I’ve never been one to seek recognition for doing good deeds.”
Qin Chuan, who insisted on recognition for good deeds, paused. “…”
“Just kidding. We’ll figure out another way to accumulate points for resources. Mainly, I don’t want any trouble over the water,” Jiang Ning continued.
“If you want it, I’ll donate this truckload of water. But if you really want to show gratitude, how about helping me find some radiation suits?” she added.
“Radiation suits?” Qin Chuan was surprised at first, then his expression changed as he looked at her. “We’ve been old friends for a while now. Do you know something I don’t? It’d be better to give me a heads up so I can prepare too.”
The more he thought about it, the more plausible it seemed. Jiang Ning wasn’t one to be taken advantage of, but the items she hoarded were peculiar.
“You’re overthinking it,” Jiang Ning chuckled. “Given the current situation, any disaster could happen. I’m just being cautious.”
Qin Chuan pondered for a moment. “Are you suspecting a nuclear leak from the earthquake?”
“I wouldn’t dare speculate. Spreading rumors will get you sent to the coal mines,” Jiang Ning replied.
Qin Chuan understood. If seafood was contaminated and mutated by viruses, what else was impossible?
If there really was a nuclear leak, would humanity stand a chance?
The thought weighed heavily on his mind.
Regardless, they had to focus on the present.
After arranging the water delivery time, Qinchuan left with his companions.
As Jiang Ning passed by Building 2 on her way back to Aoyuan, she noticed He Tianming overseeing well repairs with some workers.
Curious, she approached and saw the workers preparing to descend into the well for repairs.
They were tied with ropes so that if there was a collapse underground, they could be pulled up promptly.
Jiang Ning observed the old workers, their faces sunburnt and peeling, their hair graying at fifty, worn out by surviving in the apocalypse.
Back in Room 401, Jiang Ning didn’t conceal the water donation from Huo Yishen.
Huo Yishen pondered for a moment. “Almost all of Fengcheng’s deep wells have collapsed, and the water is murky after the earthquake.
The water in the space is clear and of good quality. Donating it without raising suspicion would be difficult. How about donating the rainwater and the well water we’ve been collecting during this time?”
That was precisely what Jiang Ning had in mind. She didn’t expect them to be on the same page.
Rainwater just needed to be purified with purification tablets, while the well water needed to be filtered due to its turbidity.
Twenty tons of water was a massive project, but thankfully Huo Yishen had planned ahead and stored water filters before the calamity, or else they would be overwhelmed.
Huo Yishen went into the space, installed the filtration system, and began filtering the water from the water tower and the well, one by one.
Time was precious, so Jiang Ning hurriedly left.
Unexpectedly, Huo Yishen grabbed her hand, looking somewhat awkward. “Um, Coke has excellent hearing.”
Jiang Ning was baffled.
“Don’t underestimate Doudou just because she’s young. Her hearing is just as good,” he clarified.
What did he mean?
“I’m having some trouble executing my plans.” He seemed worried that either Doudou would knock on the door, or the dog would try to pry the door open.
Jiang Ning realized belatedly, “You…”
With both of them being like that… he still said he couldn’t execute his plans?
“How about giving it a try?” he suggested.
Jiang Ning stood still, feeling awkward down to her toes.
Huo Yishen reached out to pull her…
Waking up from a nap, she felt a discomfort in her throat and quickly took two throat lozenges.
Ugh, what a sin!
