Chapter 241: Arrival of Polar Day
Chapter 241: Arrival of Polar Day
Work one day, rest for three days and then get lazy for the rest.
After spending more than a month of gradually handing over the wood, stone, sand, steel bars, and tiles. They finally saved up 60,000 points.
Jiang Ning looked through the list of items that could be exchanged, which were mostly food, clothing, cigarettes, and alcohol, but none of what she wanted, so she gave up the idea of continuing to save points.
With the materials handed over, a lot of space was freed up which allowed her to continue planting.
Huo Yishen was worried that she might exhaust herself, “How about finding Sharp mouthed monkey to see if we can get a seeder and a harvester?”
It’s fine, she thinks. Anyway, they’re just waiting for the new city district to be completed, which is better than being idle.
Unexpectedly, Sharp mouthed monkey had vanished!
She searched the trading street for a few days but couldn’t find him.
Jiang Ning remembered that the last time he came riding an old-fashioned bike, he mentioned that Old Luo lived near Aoyuan.
So, she found Old Luo first and finally caught Sharp mouthed monkey.
“Sis, what do you need from me?”
Covered in dust, Sharp mouthed monkey said hastily, “I’m in a hurry to scavenge.”
His wife was insisting on living in the new district. Even if he had to sell his kidneys, he couldn’t get enough points, so he was risking his life to earn them.
Jiang Ning frowned, “How did you end up like this?”
Sigh, it’s a long story.
The seawater got contaminated by ancient viruses which cut off their source of income.
After the extreme heat ended, it got cooler by the day, and water was no longer scarce.
A massive earthquake buried almost everything in ruins, except for the survivors.
With the new district under construction, the government was squeezing the rich for donations, visiting each household to persuade them to donate as much as possible, scaring them into living frugally. Even the rich households had no surplus.
With materials destroyed, the lower class couldn’t afford to buy, and the rich were afraid to spend, making it tough for middlemen like him.
Enough talking, he had to get back to moving bricks.
Jiang Ning was amused and exasperated, “Your boss lets you move bricks every day?”
“Our boss suffered even more, with many materials destroyed in the earthquake.”
Although he was often beaten, Sharp mouthed monkey still defended his benefactor, “He’s trying to buy a villa, but with so many underlings, he can’t bear the burden alone. We have to work hard, and he’ll cover the rest.”
“How many points can you earn from scavenging in a day?”
“Just… a few dozen points.” It used to be more, but not anymore.
Jiang Ning thought for a moment. Not only did she need the seeder and harvester, but also a few bicycles, tricycles, and a small scooter. “If you can get them, I’ll give you half a truckload of steel bars.”
Sharp mouthed monkey was stunned, “Sis, are you for real?”
“I’m real, more real than a pearl.” She looked at his incredulous expression.
Half a truckload of steel bars was at least 2 tons. Sharp mouthed monkey’s heart raced, “Sis, I’ll get it done in three days!”
“Three days?” That seemed a bit rushed, but she wasn’t in a hurry.
“Two and a half days.” Sharp mouthed monkey feared someone else might snatch the job, “Sis, I’ll get it done, just don’t treat me like a regular worker!”
Jiang Ning’s mouth twitched, “Alright… fine, three days then, but keep it a secret, don’t go blabbing about it.”
Are you kidding? Who would blab about this and risk of getting robbed?
Three days flew by, and Sharp mouthed monkey did get the machines, though… they were quite in a small size but at least they were intact.
The bicycles and tricycles were fine, but the small electric scooter had been left unused for three years, and she wasn’t sure if the battery was still good.
Knowing the machines were in small size, Sharp mouthed monkey felt a bit guilty and threw in a bunch of spare parts as compensation, “Sis, there’s absolutely no problem with this but if there are any issues, just find me.”
The inspection went smoothly, and Jiang Ning was quite satisfied, so she gave an extra two coils of steel bars to make up a total of 3 tons.
Sharp mouthed monkey was overjoyed, now he wouldn’t have to worry about his wife nagging him.
Jiang Ning wasn’t good with machines, but Huo Yishen fiddled with them for a bit and got the hang of it.
He sat on the seeder and asked, “What should we plant?”
Corn would take about the same time to grow, and it would be ready for harvest by the time the houses were completed.
Jiang Ning calculated, “The weather is getting cooler, so we should plant potatoes.”
So, all the cleared space was planted with cold-resistant potatoes.
Normally, they wouldn’t dare plant such crops as it would attract too much attention.
After planting the seeds, they still had several hundred kilograms left over, which were just lying around.
Jiang Ning came up with an idea, “Why not give them to He Tianming and his group?”
Aoyuan had over a hundred people. Even if they worked day and night, not every household could afford a house, and even pooling resources might not be enough.
Recently, even the children were pitching in, but reality was harsh.
Even though they were struggling, the community still had a patrol team every day to ensure the safety of both the neighborhood and the planting area.
Jiang Ning admired He Tianming for this, knowing she couldn’t do it herself.
Huo Yishen asked, “How do you plan to give it to them?”
There is no such thing as free lunch in apocalypse. Even if you were willing to give, others might not trust you.
“Giving it away for free won’t work.” Jiang Ning thought for a moment, “We’ll lend it to them. They not only have to return the seeds but also give us an additional 20% of the yield. What do you think?”
Huo Yishen thought it was feasible, “I’ll ask him.”
He took out the walkie-talkie and contacted He Tianming.
When He Tianming learned that the seed seller from the last transaction was willing to provide potato seeds, he was very excited, “That’s great! Returning 20% is no problem, but you have to help us protect the seeds from being stolen.”
Huo Yishen, having learned from Jiang Ning, became more professional, “Alright, but if you don’t have a good harvest or something unexpected happens, you will need to compensate for the seeds. What will you use as collateral?”
He Tianming thought for a moment, “How about a solar generator?”
“Alright, I’ll come by tomorrow. I’ll let you know once we have a deal.”
After the agreement, Jiang Ning took out the potatoes and left them in a ventilated area to dry.
The next day, the deal was finalized, and the third day, the transaction took place.
After two days in the wind, the potatoes had shriveled.
They traded several hundred kilograms of potatoes for the community’s solar generator.
Without a generator, life would become very inconvenient, but He Tianming encouraged everyone, “Potatoes can be harvested in three months. Besides, in the new district, we might not even dare to use a solar generator. Let’s consider this as getting used to it in advance.”
Several hundred kilograms of potato pieces could plant two to three acres of land. With enough fertilizer and care, they might have a good harvest and wouldn’t have to eat sweet potato vines every day.
The community members quickly accepted this and got to work.
Huo Yishen reminded, “Captain He, be careful with the potato pieces in the ground, make sure they aren’t stolen at night.”
So, they took turns guarding the fields.
…
After dinner, while washing the dishes, Doudou looked outside, “Sister in law, why hasn’t it gotten dark yet?”
During the extreme heat, it usually got dark around 7:30, but now it was already 8:00.
Jiang Ning stared outside for a long time, then took out a thermometer, which read 28 degrees.
The extreme heat had completely ended, and the polar day had arrived…
