Chapter 284: Something Happened
Chapter 284: Something Happened
Zhang Chao and Lu Yu heard the voice and immediately stood up straight. “Chief Ling.”
When things go wrong, even drinking water feels like a hassle.
Sure enough, as soon as she feared something, Chief Ling appeared like a tightening curse above her head, just as Jiang Ning was about to bite into her roasted meat.
Director Ling nodded. “You are… Jiang Ning?”
Jiang Ning smiled. “Yes, Chief Ling. It’s unexpected to see you again.”
After exchanging greetings, Director Ling seemed unwilling to leave.
What to do when the leader doesn’t leave?
Zhang Chao reacted quickly and quickly brought over a chair for him. “Chief Ling, please have a seat. We’re just having a small gathering. If you don’t mind, would you like something to eat or drink?”
“Would I be disturbing you?”
Zhang Chao didn’t dare to tell the truth. “Of course not, of course not.”
“Alright then, I’ll help myself.” Chief Ling waved to the waiter and ordered another round of barbecue.
Zhang Chao fetched a glass and poured beer for the leader.
Chief Ling picked up the beer and sniffed it. “Hmm, this beer is good. It’s been three years and it hasn’t expired, surprisingly.”
“It was sent by Rong Sanshao. He said it was an apology.” Jiang Ning’s expression hinted at something deeper, but her face remained calm. “I don’t know what preservation method they used, but it’s kept very well.”
Chief Ling chuckled. “Rong family’s wine, indeed good stuff. I must try it.”
Sensing Jiang Ning’s slight unease, Zhang Chao understood and immediately changed the subject. “Chief Ling, try some barbecue.”
The barbecue had been kept in a warming box and was a bit moist which cooled down quickly once taken out, but the taste was still quite good.
Chief Ling praised as he ate, “Hmm, I don’t know who grilled this, but it’s more authentic than the takeout we used to get before the disaster.”
“Anning grilled it.” Zhang Chao joined in the conversation with the leader. “Anning is the best among us three. She has worked in restaurants, barbecue shops, and bakeries before. Her culinary talent is really high, her dishes are no worse than those of a five-star chef.”
Chief Ling sincerely praised, “Indeed, talented; she even excels in fights.”
“Who wouldn’t? When she was young at the orphanage, someone bullied Anning, and she chased them with a brick around the orphanage five times.”
Zhang Chao wasn’t afraid to embarrass himself. “When Lu Yu and I were not sensible, we accidentally bullied her once, and she knocked out our teeth.”
Jiang Ning smiled. “Haha, no pain, no gain.”
“Exactly, after that fight, Lu Yu and I started hanging out with her.”
The waiter brought over more barbecue. The ingredients and skills were clearly visible, with richness throughout the meat.
However, the fried potato flour was also good. It’s resistant to cold with a lot of starch, and the noodles made were very chewy, except that they were expensive.
Jiang Ning intended to go back and make some, anyway, idle hands were idle, and it was perfect for hot pot.
While eating and chatting, Chief Ling spoke again, “How is the neighborhood recently? They haven’t bullied you again, right?”
“Thanks for your concern, Chief Ling.” Jiang Ning’s tone was grateful, “Since you brought people over, that bunch has been more subdued and hasn’t dared to provoke us again.”
Who? Zhang Chao and Lu Yu were a bit bewildered. Who bullied Anning?
Were they mistaken? Anning had always been the one to bully others; who dared to provoke her?!?!
Both were astonished but didn’t ask in front of Chief Ling.
Especially Zhang Chao, who gently kicked Lu Yu under the table, reminding him that something was not quite right and to be alert.
Chief Ling didn’t sit for long, tasted a bit, and then stood up and left. “There’s still something at the police station. Enjoy your meal, I’ll take my leave.”
Zhang Chao stood up and escorted the leader to the door.
Back in their seats, both couldn’t wait to ask, “Anning, what’s going on?”
Jiang Ning didn’t hide anything and told them about the troubles she faced from being ostracized and harassed by the wealthy.
Lu Yu was speechless. “It’s been three years since the apocalypse, and outside, bandits love to rob the rich. Who knows how many people die every day. Yet, they still think they’re untouchable. They really look down on others.”
Zhang Chao sneered coldly. “People like that are better off staying home. Otherwise, if they don’t end up chopped into pieces, it would be strange.”
Having eaten and drunk their fill, Jiang Ning almost wanted to smoke a cigarette. “After a few rounds of sorting them out, they’ve been more obedient now.”
There was still plenty of alcohol, and the three continued bantering, sharing their respective experiences.
As they chatted, Zhang Chao suddenly leaned over. “Anning, could you help me get some medicine?”
“What kind of medicine?” Other requests were fine, but medicine was getting harder to obtain.
“It…It’s for that.”
For that? What does that mean!
Jiang Ning glanced at him, quickly realizing, and showed a sympathetic look. “There’s really no such medicine. Just eat more chives when you’re fine.”
Almost choked, Zhang Chao said, “…” No, who was she looking down on!
Lu Yu, on the other hand, was direct. “Contraceptives.”
Oh, just say it straightforwardly. Stuttering like that, she thought it was some special medicine.
“Anning, think of something for Chao.” Lu Yu pitied his friend a bit. “He and Ding Qi haven’t been together for long, and Weili had a miscarriage and without proper care she suffered from illness till now. He’s scared stiff.”
It’s just a matter between men and women, but without protection, it’s easy to cause a big mess.
He’d been living with Zheng Wei Li for a few years, but Chao was still a newbie driver and had a big appetite and felt uncomfortable every day.
Don’t mention Zhang Chao; since Weili’s miscarriage, Lu Yu had also had no communication in that area.
Ah, it felt like there were several tons of explosives inside, and if it didn’t explode in silence, it would die in silence.
Day by day, it’s boring.
But Jiang Ning was different; just by looking at her condition, she could tell that everything was fine.
Oh, they’re truly in trouble!
Jiang Ning couldn’t help but laugh, making the two men feel more depressed.
“Is this it? I thought the sky was falling.” Jiang Ning agreed readily, “Okay, I’ll take care of it for you.”
There might not be much of anything else, but this one she could definitely handle, thanks to Chairman Feng’s generous gift.
The two were relieved and looked expectantly, especially Lu Yu, afraid he might be left out. He reminded, “I want some too.”
There was no way; they were both men of appetites, and besides, Weili’s illness was almost better.
After chatting for a while, Lu Yu got up to pay the bill and was told at the cashier that someone had already settled it.
They didn’t expect Chief Ling to be so upright.
Jiang Ning was a little surprised, but thinking of something Huo Yishen said, it wasn’t so surprising after all.
Waving goodbye, she rode her bike home.
She hadn’t gone far when the walkie-talkie in her bag suddenly crackled.
“Anning, are you still with Zhang Chao and Lu Yu?” Zheng Wei Li sounded urgent. “Me and Ding Qi got injured. We’re on the west side of the city, Hongqi Road. Can you get them to come over quickly?”
“Yes, what happened to you guys?”
“We were attacked by thugs.”
Jiang Ning immediately turned her bike around. “There’s a police point stationed in the west of the city. You figure out a way to contact them; I’ll go with Lu Yu and Zhang Chao right now.”
Weili gave her the specific address. “Don’t contact them; just come over yourselves.”
Pedaling quickly, Jiang Ning caught up with Lu Yu and Zhang Chao. “Wei Li and Ding Qi are in trouble.”
The mountain bike couldn’t carry passengers, and in broad daylight, they couldn’t bring out a four-wheeled vehicle. “I’ll go ahead. You guys follow.”
Their faces changed abruptly, and they sprinted behind her.
