The Beginning of Natural Disaster, I Won by Hoarding Tens of Billions of Supplies

Chapter 574: How is your back injury?

Chapter 574: How is your back injury?

Jiang Ning only then realized that the other patient in the room was Yu Changzheng.

Now she finally understood why there were two patients in the special care ward. It was clearly a setup, waiting for her.

Yu Changzheng was the leader handpicked by Gu Tinglin for the special team. There was no way Jiang Ning could just stand by and do nothing. But if she saved him, she’d have to save Xiao Wei too, otherwise people would say she was playing favorites.

Commander Xiao quickly chimed in, “Dear niece, Old Yu is not only the leader of the special team, but also a sworn brother of the Chief. You’ve got to find a way to save him.”

Then he walked over to the unconscious Yu Changzheng and said, “Old Yu, wake up, you have to hang in there. My niece is back. With her medical skills, she’ll definitely be able to save you.”

The hospital director looked a bit awkward but didn’t say anything.

Jiang Ning didn’t respond, but she sneered inwardly.

Old fox, he really knows how to scheme.

With them sharing a room, there was no way she could give Yu Changzheng any special treatment.

But maybe that was for the best; to keep things fair.

Jiang Ning asked about Yu Changzheng’s condition, and the director replied honestly, “His situation is a little better than the others, but the real issue is the lack of medicine.”

Pneumonia was not a difficult disease to treat; even regular doctors could handle it. The key issue was the medicine!

Jiang Ning did not stay long and asked the director to send someone with her to pick the medicine.

The hospital was not far from her home; it only took a few minutes by car.

Jiang Ning didn’t go back to her own house. She got out of the car and went straight to the house next door. “Father?”

Bai Xue and Coke ran out of the house, stepping on the snow and sprinting toward her, followed by four clumsy little rice dumplings.

“Woo woo woo.”

“Aw aw aw.”

Jiang Ning ignored them and headed straight for Gu Tinglin’s room.

Gu Tinglin, who had sprained his back, was resting. “Come in.”

His voice was low, but he seemed to be in a good mood.

As the Chief, his living conditions were much better than most. He had plenty of cotton clothes and bedding, but Doudou still brought him a lightweight silk quilt that was super warm. She even picked out some down jacket liners for both him and Shu Xueqing. When worn underneath, no one could tell.

All the supplies had been left behind by Jiang Ning, stored neatly in the supply room—just in case.

There was also a heater in the room, making it very comfortable.

Oh, right, Coke and Bai Xue also brought their pups to keep him company.

Also, Coke had a tablet, which Jiang Ning had given it.

Back in the day, it loved curling up on the couch with Doudou to watch stuff. Then it started cuddling in a nest with its partner to watch. Now, it had brought the tablet to Gu Tinglin to help him pass the time while he recovered.

Jiang Ning almost choked—not from jealousy, not really. But still—this dog treated that tablet like a treasure and had never even brought it to her.

Okay, fine. She was jealous.

She’d raised it like her precious baby for years, and yet a few months with Gu Tinglin, and it already switched loyalties. Figures—grandpa-granddog bond is stronger.

When he saw her, Gu Tinglin tried to get out of bed, but Jiang Ning stopped him. “How’s your back?”

“Not too bad. Just need to lie down and avoid standing or sitting for long.”

He could still take care of himself, but everyone around him was acting like he’d break.

He wasn’t made of glass—no need to overreact.

To prove it, he insisted on getting up and even walked a few steps.

It hurt, but nothing unbearable.

“I twisted it during morning exercise, no big deal.”

Jiang Ning checked and confirmed it wasn’t serious. With some rest, he’d be fine.

Commander Xiao’s people were waiting outside, so Jiang Ning briefly mentioned that she had been invited to the hospital.

After working together for over a decade, Gu Tinglin knew Commander Xiao well. “He has national interests in mind, but his ambition is equally large. Usually, he wears a smile and handles things smoothly and smartly. Still, with his son’s life on the line, I understand why he acted so rudely.”

If it were him, he probably would have done the same.

“Is there a way to save him?” Gu Tinglin paused for a moment, then added, “But your own safety comes first.”

Jiang Ning answered honestly, “There’s not much medicine left. I need to make sure I have enough for the people I care about when they get sick.”

It used to be just Huo Yishen and Doudou. But now, there were more and more people.

If she had to choose between giving life-saving medicine to someone who stood against her or someone on the same side, the choice was obvious.

Since that kind of medicine couldn’t be replenished, Gu Tinglin respected her decision. “Do what you think is right.”

Jiang Ning nodded. “I’ll go back first and get medicine for Commander Xiao and Commander Yu.”

Gu Tinglin nodded. “Your Uncle Yu’s condition is pretty serious. It could worsen at any time. Come with me to visit him later.”

Jiang Ning had no objections and went home to prepare the medicine.

She grabbed antibiotics and anti-inflammatory meds she’d gotten from the Americans, plus herbs that help treat pneumonia.

She packed everything together. As for who gets what, the hospital could handle the distribution.

After feeding the fragrant leg to the couple, she and Gu Tinglin went next door to eat. Shu Xueqing was still working at the hospital and wouldn’t be back until the evening.

Sprains need calcium, so Jiang Ning made pork rib and corn soup, a clean fish dish, egg and tofu skin soup, and some greens.

After dinner, seeing that the kitchen was running low on supplies, she thought about leaving some stuff behind, but Gu Tinglin spoke up, “Don’t leave anything. A lot of people come and go here, and many of them are quite sharp. It might cause you trouble.”

Jiang Ning didn’t mind. “Then you and Aunt Shu can just come over to eat. I’ll ask Bai Xue or Coke to come get you.”

“Woof!”

“Awoo!”

The two little furballs acted so clever, they were practically ready to call them grandma and grandpa.

Things were tough out there, so even visiting the hospital meant you couldn’t bring anything too good. Jiang Ning packed two cans of fruit, two cans of fish, and half a pound of brick sugar.

These were all the things she got from the America Base, so there was no worry about where they came from.

Huo Yishen drove, and Jiang Ning sat in the back, stuffing an extra cushion behind Gu Tinglin to make him comfortable.

At the hospital, the dogs delivered lunchboxes to their busy grandma.

Jiang Ning and Gu Tinglin headed to the patient rooms.

Commander Xiao’s son was still hospitalized. Madam Yu had just come over to keep watch and was feeding her husband some porridge water.

When she saw the commanding officer and his daughter walk in, Commander Xiao quickly sat up. “Sir, Miss Jiang! What brings you here?”

“We came to check on you,” Gu Tinglin asked with concern. “How is the situation?”

“My son already took the medicine Miss Jiang gave him. His fever’s gone down a bit, but we’re still keeping an eye on things. Thank you so much, both of you…”

He went on and on, clearly touched and full of gratitude.

Jiang Ning almost laughed, but Gu Tinglin stayed composed and comforted him, “It’s looking mild for now. Your body’s strong, and you’ll recover quickly. Don’t worry.”

After a few pleasantries, Gu Tinglin turned to ask about Yu Changzheng.

Madam Yu looked worried. “Thank you for your concern, Sir.”

She had worked in military logistics and had two children with Yu Changzheng. During the disaster, their daughter was studying overseas and couldn’t come back, and their son—an excellent graduate from a military academy—held a high position at a southern military base.

Unfortunately, fate was cruel, and they couldn’t escape the natural disasters. The ship they were on during a storm sank, and they were lost in the raging sea.

Their daughter never even got the chance to return home.

Madam Yu had a difficult labor, and their daughter was frail from birth, catching a cold from even the slightest breeze. They didn’t hold much hope.

In the end, only the couple remained. And now, Yu Changzheng was gravely ill.

The couple had always been affectionate, and their love story was well-known in the army. Who knew that in their later years, they would face such continuous setbacks?

Madam Yu’s eyes were dull and lifeless, as if she’d already lost the will to keep going. If Yu Changzheng passed away, it would be the final straw for her.

But in the apocalypse, Jiang Ning had seen this kind of thing more times than she could count.
