Chapter 609: That Worthless, Shameless Look
Chapter 609: That Worthless, Shameless Look
It was perfectly normal for Jiang Ning to worry.
Huo Yishen held her tightly. “Anning, people change. If they end up resenting you for this, it means your friendship has come to an end. Don’t blame yourself.”
In life, people cross paths in all sorts of ways. Some pass by quickly, some walk with you for a while, and some stick by your side through thick and thin.
Jiang Ning understood, she was just feeling a bit sentimental.
Huo Yishen comforted her, “If it were them who got the opportunity, they might not have done as well as you. As long as you’ve done what you can, that’s all that matters.”
Jiang Ning nodded and quickly drifted off to sleep.
When she woke up, it was already afternoon. The group wasn’t in any hurry to leave, so they decided to have a relaxed meal, pulling out the supplies they’d taken from the Americans.
They had canned meat, nuts, dried fruits, and even made some ham and seaweed soup.
Zheng Weili and the others led the main group to retreat. Their pace was slower, while the special team moved steadily, staying the night once again.
After eating and drinking their fill, they set off slowly in their cars.
They didn’t go back the same way. Instead, they followed a new route using their compass.
When they arrived at the agreed spot, Zheng Weili and the others still hadn’t shown up.
A few of them didn’t wait on land but instead went back to the nuclear submarine to use the periscope and check out the situation on shore.
Two days later, the other group finally appeared.
There weren’t enough vehicles, and halfway through, one broke down. After repairs, they had to go back and forth to pick people up, which slowed their progress.
They waited anxiously at the shore, looking around.
The nuclear submarine couldn’t get too close, so Jiang Ning took out the 2688 and a few compressed assault boats, making constant trips to bring people in.
Zhang Chao and Lu Yu’s injuries were no longer a concern. They were helping survivors board the boats on-site.
After over a decade, everyone had matured and became more sensible. They weren’t the carefree group they used to be.
The evacuation went on for half a day. Zhang Chao, Lu Yu, and the others were good drivers, so they volunteered to drive the 2688.
Considering the countless ocean disasters they’d survived; Jiang Ning didn’t doubt their abilities for a second when it came to preserving the fire seed containers.
Ding Qi wanted to destroy the vehicles so they wouldn’t fall into the hands of Americans.
“It’s a non-renewable resource. Destroying it would be such a waste,” Jiang Ning stopped her. “You all go first. We’ll hide the vehicles, and the salvage team will come by to get them.”
Since Jiang Ning spoke up, Ding Qi gave up the idea and got on the assault boat heading for the 2688.
Jiang Ning and the others drove the vehicles to a remote spot, stored them in the space, and then returned to the nuclear submarine.
The place was packed.
The survivors were in ragged clothes, looking tired and worn out, but they were immensely grateful to the special salvage team and even started asking about Fengcheng.
Could they find work there? Was there a way to fill their stomachs?
Huang Mao responded carefully, “There will definitely be challenges, but as long as you stay active and keep going, there’s always a way to survive. It’s much better than staying here.”
Of course, it wasn’t the same for them.
They had special treatment—thanks to Sister Ning.
The black German Shepherd dog had also been brought onto the nuclear submarine.
Now fully awake, it was still angry, baring its teeth at everyone and refusing to eat.
Well, it had some pride.
Jiang Ning carried it onto the submarine, and countless eyes inside the submarine were fixed on the black dog.
A dog, a very large wolfdog.
Braised, in a meat pot, hotpot?
Some of the survivors couldn’t resist, drooling, their eyes burning with desire, and their stomachs growling.
The black German Shepherd, which had been hungry for several days, “…”.
Dogs can sense good and evil. Injured and captured, its fur stood on end.
So, so scary!
The dog’s life was in danger!
Jiang Ning dragged it into a room and locked the door.
The room was cramped, so she just entered the space instead.
The black German Shepherd had a muzzle on, and after days of hunger, it was extremely weak.
Jiang Ning couldn’t care less. She pulled out some barbecue and beer and started enjoying the meal with Huo Yishen.
The black German Shepherd was transferred from the headquarters, and his life with the Americans wasn’t bad; sometimes, he would even get canned luncheon meat to snack on.
This treatment is already worse than a dog’s, but… the smell of the roasted ribs and chicken is really tempting.
The dog hadn’t tasted anything like that before, and it couldn’t control its drooling. Its eyes were sparkling, and saliva was dripping everywhere.
“Wuwuwu…”
Jiang Ning wasn’t about to go easy on it. She kept sneaking food and chowing down in front of the clueless dog.
She then decided to toss a bowl of bones next to it.
Jiang Ning unstrapped its muzzle. “If you keep baring your teeth, I’ll turn you into a dog meat stew.”
Driven by instinct, the dog eagerly got to work on the bones.
They were just bones, but they tasted so good!
Seeing the German Shepherd acting so pitiful, Jiang Ning couldn’t resist tossing it a juicy chicken leg.
Sigh, she missed her own dog.
While munching on the chicken leg, the German Shepherd suddenly started sniffling.
Who knows what it was crying about? Maybe it had never eaten anything this delicious in its life.
Look at that shameless look.
After eating and drinking her fill, Jiang Ning took a shower and left the space to sleep in the cramped room.
The dog lay quietly in the corner. It couldn’t go out, not with humans outside wanting to eat it.
With hundreds of people on board, it took serious skill to manage. Xu Kaitai was on full alert, overseeing the entire operation.
More people meant more problems: people needing the bathroom, finding places to sleep, hunger, and all sorts of unexpected situations. It was a headache.
Zheng Weili and the others were on the 2688, but there were still those accompanying the submarine crew, who had gathered plenty of supplies from American base. But the journey was long, and with so many people, they had to stretch the food.
When Jiang Ning and Huo Yishen went into hiding, Huang Mao and the others smartly left the camp management to the designated leaders.
They were just giving them a ride back—no charge.
As for everything else, they’d handle it as needed.
It wasn’t that the special salvage team was narrow-minded. With so many people crammed into a submarine, oxygen, food, and bathroom breaks were all major issues. They simply didn’t have the time or energy to take care of everything.
Xu Kaitai and the others were focused solely on safety and had to speed up the air exchanges on the submarine. They couldn’t spare any energy for anything else.
To avoid any mishaps, they made sure to clearly communicate with the camp leaders in advance.
Also, the survivors were eating poorly, and the special salvage team didn’t want to show off either—everyone was eating the same bland, tasteless food.
It wasn’t a joke. No one should take on too much responsibility or expect the survivors to be perfect. After all, they were all experienced survivors from the apocalypse, each with more than ten years under their belt.
Sure enough, some of the more sensitive team members caught wind of complaints.
People wanting better places to sleep, better food, or who were feeling sick and dizzy…
Anyone who was made a camp leader wasn’t a pushover. They immediately snapped, “With all these requests, should I have them send you back?”
At first, the leader had been grumbling about how the special salvage team’s demands were unreasonable.
But it turned out, some people were just being picky.
Someone even asked to go to the bathroom because of diarrhea.
“Diarrhea?!” The leader shot them a cold look. “You’ve only been eating a little bit each day. How are you even having diarrhea? Hold it in.”
He wasn’t fooled. He knew they were just trying to hog the bathroom to sleep in it.
The constant rejections of requests from the special salvage team led to fewer complaints. They weren’t getting any better food than anyone else, so many people slowly gave up on their hopes.
They just had to endure, hoping they would reach Fengcheng soon.
Jiang Ning was fast asleep when the submarine suddenly shook violently.
As if on cue, disaster struck—they were in a heavy storm.
Panic erupted outside, and shouting and even cries could be heard…
