Chapter 626: Nuclear Radiation
Chapter 626: Nuclear Radiation
The force was so intense, it felt like a storm at sea.
Realizing something was wrong, Jiang Ning quickly pulled both herself and the submarine into the space.
Everyone was knocked around, disoriented, their lungs aching terribly. But as they regained their senses, suddenly, everything was calm.
It was as if time had frozen.
Jiang Ning was relieved that she was piloting the 2688, a vessel much sturdier and more collision-resistant than a nuclear submarine. Otherwise, it would have been wrecked today.
What on earth was that?
Even Xu Kaitai, who had spent years at sea and was incredibly familiar with marine life, didn’t have an answer.
In his knowledge, such a thing didn’t even exist.
But it was night, and visibility was poor underwater. They could only rely on sonar feedback to make a guess.
Jiang Ning furrowed her brows, vaguely suspecting the truth.
Mutated species.
Not mutations caused by ancient viruses, but by nuclear radiation.
Huang Mao was stunned. “Sister Ning, have you watched too many movies?”
But he fell silent immediately after saying it.
There were precedents in their country; it was just a nuclear leak, yet the mutated wolf fish could grow to several meters long.
It was better not to think about it too much. The more they thought about it, the more goosebumps they would get.
“Should be fine, right?” Zhang Li said with a shiver. “The land sank so many years ago. If this really was happening, we should’ve already mutated by now.”
Huo Yishen reassured them, “The nuclear materials are heavily protected. It’s not that easy for them to leak. Even if there’s a leak, it’s an isolated incident, and the global impact is minimal.”
Huang Mao nodded repeatedly. “Right, that’s definitely it.”
Zhang Li started to put things together. “That thing we saw earlier must’ve mutated because of nuclear radiation.”
If radiation-induced mutations were spreading everywhere, they would’ve encountered them long ago in the past year.
“It must be the leak from the other side of the country that caused the mutations. Even in death, they won’t let people rest.”
While they were discussing, Jiang Ning had already closed the observation window.
Even though it was night in the space, it was safer this way.
Fearing another sudden shift, everyone quickly strapped themselves in.
Once they were secured, Jiang Ning exited the space with the submarine.
The 2688 rocked again, but not too violently.
Xu Kaitai stared at the sonar equipment; the creature from before had vanished.
It seemed like it was just a brief rampage, attacking anything that seemed out of place.
The team didn’t dare to stay too long and immediately pushed the submarine to full speed.
When they reached the spot where the Fire Seed Container was lost, the team began their exploration, and Huo Yishen accompanied Jiang Ning to dive for the salvage.
The depth was considerable, but as long as their equipment was advanced enough, their bodies could still handle it.
Jiang Ning could faintly see the Fire Seed Container and swam toward it happily…
Suddenly, Huo Yishen yanked her arm urgently, pointing to the distance with a panicked expression.
Jiang Ning instinctively looked in that direction.
What the hell…
A massive dark shadow shot towards them like lightning.
The underwater light was insufficient, and she couldn’t make out its shape, but it was enormous—its body seemed to stretch for dozens of meters.
Her heart skipped a beat.
This was bad—was it the mutated monster from before?
She couldn’t tell if it was the same one or a relative.
If the 2688 could be thrown like that, anyone caught in its path would be turned into meat paste in an instant.
In that split second, Jiang Ning considered retreating into the space.
But then she thought about it—if she and Huo Yishen hid, what about Xu Kaitai and the others?
There were 12 lives at stake, and each one was a top talent from Fengcheng.
They were carefully chosen by Gu Tinglin for her.
The creature was aggressive, and its combat abilities were terrifying.
Not to mention its speed and impact; even the submarine’s fish guns wouldn’t be enough to kill it.
If the submarine got entangled and dragged into the deep sea by this creature, or if they had to engage in direct combat, did they even have a chance of surviving?
At that moment, Jiang Ning hesitated a little.
She was afraid she’d regret it later if she didn’t give it her all to save them.
She had to take a chance.
She exchanged a glance with Huo Yishen, and without a second thought, they both cut the ropes binding them and swam quickly toward the Fire Seed Container.
At the same time, the monster noticed their movements and immediately went after them.
They were separated from the monster by the container.
The sea monster charged straight at it without hesitation!
Just as it crashed into the container, Jiang Ning pulled it—and the monster—into her space.
The moment she entered, she quickly used her mind to trap the monster and shove it into the empty Fire Seed Container in the Black Soil Garden.
It worked.
But the strain left Jiang Ning with a splitting headache. She felt like her head was about to burst.
The monster was massive and sealing it had drained every bit of her mental energy.
Huo Yishen had just picked her up when a loud crash came from the Black Soil Garden.
Good grief! The Fire Seed Container had been knocked over by the sea monster inside, and a thunderous impact echoed from within.
Luckily, that container had been empty. Otherwise, if there had been supplies inside, it would’ve been smashed for sure.
Even curled up, the monster still took up more than half the space inside. There wasn’t enough oxygen, and it couldn’t stretch out its body.
Too bad the medicine field nearby got crushed by the falling container.
Drenched in cold sweat, Jiang Ning sipped an energy drink to recover while letting the monster do its thing inside the container.
Huo Yishen thought of something and helped her into a radiation suit.
Then he grabbed the detector. As he got close to the shaking container, sure enough—it was giving off radiation.
The levels were low though. As long as there wasn’t long-term exposure, it wouldn’t harm them.
Chances were, the monster had been exposed to some radiation source and mutated. But over time, most of it had probably worn off.
After half an hour of rest, Jiang Ning had recovered about fifty percent of her strength.
The container had finally gone still. They weren’t sure if the sea monster was dead yet, so they didn’t open it.
Jiang Ning wanted to leave, worried the others would be getting anxious.
But Huo Yishen stopped her. “Can you keep up with your stamina? Rest a bit longer.”
“I’m fine now.”
Thankfully, after a whole year of wandering—either collecting Fire Seed Containers or diving deep underwater—her mental strength had grown a lot. Otherwise, she wouldn’t have been able to deal with the monster today.
Just as they left, the container holding the mutated sea monster suddenly got kicked out of the space.
Yeah… Jiang Ning really had a bone to pick with this space. It had zero compassion.
No wonder the thing didn’t die even after being locked up without oxygen for half an hour. It had probably grown up soaked in radiation.
Jiang Ning had no choice but to first store the proper container, then went back to deal with the sea monster again. But before she could move it, she saw Huang Mao and the others coming down.
When the others saw the two hadn’t come back up, they pulled on the rope—only to realize it had been cut.
Panic hit. Something had gone wrong!
They didn’t hesitate and dove down to help.
When they saw the silhouettes of the two below, they let out a breath of relief and quickly gestured: What happened?
Huo Yishen signed back: Some issues. We’ll be back in half an hour. Get to the surface for now.
Their diving gear wasn’t as advanced, so they couldn’t stay underwater for long.
After exchanging a few signals, the team returned to the surface.
Jiang Ning shoved the “unruly” container back into her space and collapsed onto a bed to rest for another thirty minutes.
By the time she came out again, the sea monster was finally dead. The space didn’t reject it anymore.
Huo Yishen grabbed her hand and pulled her upward. They finally surfaced.
Jiang Ning took out the transport ship.
When the team saw the two of them come up, they finally relaxed. They hurried over to pull them aboard.
Xu Kaitai asked right away, “Commander Huo, what happened down there?”
