Chapter 637: Finally Married My Sister
Chapter 637: Finally Married My Sister
Yu Yin had been caught several times before, so the outcome was pretty much predictable.
She had gone through multiple miscarriages.
Though she had managed to fight back and kill several of her captors, in a world like this, where medical care is scarce. The fact that she had survived was already a miracle.
“The doctor said my situation isn’t great. The chances of getting pregnant are low,” she said, her eyes red and her voice trembling.
When the disaster hit, Jiang Ning was only 19 years old. Yu Yin was two years younger, born with a frail body and living in a foreign country, it was clear how strong she was just to make it this far.
“It’s not your fault, don’t blame yourself,” Jiang Ning said, handing her a handkerchief. “The doctor just said the chances are low, but that doesn’t mean there’s no hope. Besides, most people’s health has worsened in the apocalypse. Even after treatment, not all women can get pregnant. Don’t put too much pressure on yourself. Rong Sanshao will pull you out of the mud. Trust me, he’s not someone so shallow.”
Yu Yin bit her lip, holding back tears, her face full of sadness.
Jiang Ning held her cold hand. “Does he know about your situation?”
Yu Yin nodded. “He does.”
“Then what’s there to worry about? You’re about to get married. Just stay positive, and let things happen naturally. Who knows, you might get pregnant one day soon.”
Yu Yin hesitated. “Sister Ning, I’ve been on medication for months, but my period still hasn’t come.”
“Take it slow. Your body will get better,” Jiang Ning reassured her. “When you have some free time, bring your medicine over, and I’ll check them out to see if we can speed up the healing process.”
Yu Yin trusted her. “Thank you, Sister Ning.”
“No need to thank me. Our families are close. You’re like a sister to me, even without blood ties.”
After seeing Yu Yin off, Jiang Ning spent some time with the dogs.
The three treasures were getting big, and she probably wouldn’t be able to keep them much longer before sending them back to the training center.
After a nap and a quick bath, Jiang Ning didn’t feel like cooking, so she just grabbed some food from her space.
The ruthless couple didn’t say a word—one went to fetch Grandpa, the other to fetch Grandma.
“Woof woof!”
“Awoo… woo…”
They were eager, knowing they’d get meat when they got back.
With the little messengers giving the heads-up, Gu Tinglin didn’t dare stay late at work.
When he showed up on time, Commander Xiao joked, “Chief, your precious daughter’s back?”
Gu Tinglin chuckled, “Yeah, she’s back.”
Huo Yishen and Doudou also returned just in time for dinner. The whole family gathered happily for the meal.
Now that his daughter and son-in-law wouldn’t have to go out to sea for a while, Gu Tinglin was especially happy. “You’ve both worked hard these past two years. Now, take some time to rest.”
After dinner, Jiang Ning checked on Gu Tinglin’s health, while Shu Xueqing cleaned up and fed the dogs.
In the study, the son-in-law and father-in-law went over the specifics of the supplies they had recovered in the past two years. The two sisters-in-law sat on the couch, eating fruit.
Jiang Ning asked with concern, “Doudou, now that every household in Fengcheng has their own private plot, how’s the farm business going?”
“It’s still tight,” Doudou replied, explaining the current situation. “The private plots are mostly used to grow vegetables, potatoes, and sweet potatoes. If the climate stays stable, it can barely solve the hunger problem, but the government doesn’t have any food reserves. Grandpa He asked me to adjust the planting structure—less vegetables, more potatoes, sweet potatoes, beans, wheat, herbs, cotton, and mulberry trees.
Besides Fengcheng, many supplies are still needed to support the other six cities. Even though they have planting plans, they won’t be self-sufficient for at least five years.”
Doudou paused for a moment. “Sister-in-law, a few groups have been buying land recently. They want to go into agriculture or livestock farming, and the Agricultural Bureau has approved it.”
Jiang Ning thought for a moment. “Who are they?”
“They all have connections to the military or government. The land purchases are small—just a few dozen acres each.”
Unlike their family, which already had ten thousand mu.
“The government fears monopolies. They’re bad for future development,” Jiang Ning said with a broad perspective. “In chaotic times, a monopoly can be a hero; in peaceful times, it becomes a hindrance. Diverse development is the healthy way forward.”
When you’re eating meat yourself, you’ve got to let others have some soup, or else the pot will eventually get smashed.
It’s not hard to imagine who’s standing behind them.
Jiang Ning had the patience to tolerate others, as long as they didn’t try to boss her around.
Feeling a bit tired, Jiang Ning turned off the lights and went to bed early.
The in-laws were chatting about something, and Huo Yishen hadn’t returned even late into the night.
She was woken up early in the morning. When Jiang Ning groggily opened her eyes, she realized it was already bright outside.
Zheng Weili had arrived early. “Anning, is Brother Shen home?”
Jiang Ning got up to wash up and came out to find the two little scoundrels already entertaining guests.
One was at the fridge, the other munching on cucumber, signaling for Zheng Weili to eat.
Zheng Weili laughed helplessly, “You two turned into experts now?”
Jiang Ning thought she was in a rush, but to her surprise, Zheng Weili happily said, “Anning, the government opened the Civil Affairs Bureau a month ago. We’ve been waiting for you to come back. We plan to go get our marriage certificates together.”
Civil Affairs Bureau? Jiang Ning was a little surprised.
“If they hadn’t opened it, things would’ve gotten messy,” Zheng Weili said with a wry smile. “Now that food and shelter aren’t major problems, marriage and childbearing needs have become a priority. But with more men than women, women have become hot commodities. Today, they form a family with one man; tomorrow, if they argue and can’t live together, they form a family with someone else.
Men aren’t any better—those with a bit of spare food hop from one woman to another. With no certificates, relationships are chaotic. Fights break out all the time, some end up with bloodied heads. We at the police station are exhausted.”
With more men than women, no certificates, and no responsibility, fights over relationship issues were happening all the time.
If this continued, it would affect social harmony. So the government had decided to bring back the Civil Affairs Bureau to help address and regulate these issues.
Zhang Chao and Lu Yu had never gotten their certificates despite the years of disasters. Now that there was an opportunity, they were waiting for Jiang Ning to come back so they could get theirs too.
And here they were, arriving early.
Jiang Ning had no objections, and Huo Yishen was more than happy about it.
They agreed to meet at the Civil Affairs Bureau, and Jiang Ning went inside to get ready.
She picked out a nice outfit and even put on makeup, instantly looking much younger.
She also picked out a set for Huo Yishen.
Not playing favorites, she prepared clothes for Zhang Chao, Lu Yu, and the others as well.
When they arrived at the Civil Affairs Bureau, Zhang Chao and Lu Yu were already waiting.
When they saw Jiang Ning and Huo Yishen, their mouths almost dropped open.
In the post-apocalyptic world, the gap between people really was huge.
Jiang Ning handed them the bag with the clothes. “Hurry up and get ready. We need to make sure the photos turn out nice.”
The registration process was simple. They took digital photos for the files, recorded both parties’ fingerprints, and while they couldn’t get the marriage certificates right away, they had a video of the ceremony.
After living together for over ten years, reciting vows didn’t make them blush anymore, but at least it felt official.
Zhang Chao was happy. Finally, he got to marry his “big sister.”
As they walked out of the Civil Affairs Bureau, Lu Yu, basking in the sunlight, smiled and said, “Anning, we’re really lucky to have made it this far. We grew up in an orphanage together, and now we’re getting our certificates together. We’ll grow old together too.”
Zheng Weili corrected him, “It’s not just luck. If it weren’t for Anning saving us multiple times, we wouldn’t even be alive to be here getting married today.”
Jiang Ning smiled, “The disasters are over. Our new life is starting now.”
Back home, she took a nap while Huo Yishen went to the docks to handle the Fire Seed Containers.
When she woke up at noon, Doudou was at the farm, and the two little scoundrels had run off somewhere with the pups.
She had overslept, and she felt a bit out of it, not sure if she was floating on the sea or lying at home.
With nothing to do, she felt like she should be getting something done.
The weather was still unpredictable, but the extremes were getting milder. The disasters seemed to be over now, and the world was in a rebuilding phase.
Snacking on some fruit, Jiang Ning strolled through her space, roughly taking stock of their current supplies.
Her gaze landed on the hibernation chambers by chance—it felt like the right time to start the experiment.
