Chapter 926 - Just another pig begging for death
A few minutes later, Bai Hu Lie lay sprawled on the ground, flat on his back and gasping for air, his broad chest rising and falling heavily.
His muzzle was smeared red, and his white coat with black stripes was stained in patches, tufts of fur matted together by the still-warm blood.
"Ah… ah… Son of a bitch!" Bai Hu Lie cursed between heavy gasps, clenching his fists until his claws scraped against the ground.
Qingyi stood right in front of him, hands elegantly clasped behind his back, looking down at him with the calm of someone who'd just been out for a walk.
There wasn't a single scratch on him. Not even a speck of dust on his clothes.
Seated on a bench nearby, Xiaohu sipped his drink and watched it all, in no hurry whatsoever to get involved.
"You need to improve, little tiger. If you don't reach the Stellar Sovereign Realm soon, you'll fall even further behind," Qingyi teased, a mischievous smirk playing at the corner of his mouth.
"Little tiger my cock!" Bai Hu Lie forced himself up, one hand braced on his knee, and spat a mix of saliva and blood onto the ground. The coppery taste still clung to his tongue.
But no matter how much he cursed, he knew the reality.
Now that Qingyi had broken through to the Stellar Sovereign Realm, the gap between them had grown too wide.
He needed to improve too—and fast.
Bai Hu Lie stretched, cracking his neck from side to side with a couple of dull pops. "How long until the war? Three months? Six?"
"Between three and six months," Qingyi replied. "Apparently, they've already started preparing the planet, and both sides are in quite a hurry. I'm already prepared, so before I head there, I plan to visit the Immortal Heavenly Capital first."
The Immortal Heavenly Capital was a place that had greatly piqued Qingyi's interest.
The Celestial Orthodox Martial Alliance was about the same size as Earth, with billions of inhabitants and many gigantic capitals.
But the Immortal Heavenly Capital was on another level.
A coalition of the Nine Great Sects and the Three Great Merchant Families maintained it, backed by countless other conglomerates and regional powers.
Its population hovered around twenty-five million.
In theory, that was a small number. In practice, those twenty-five million were the elite of the elite.
The Three Great Families—Mu, Zhang, and Wei—had their economic and political base in that city, with the three patriarchs personally managing all local politics.
The Zhang Family controlled the general industrial market. The Mu Family dominated spaceship manufacturing. And the Wei Family held the celestial agricultural market.
They weren't exactly monopolies, but their power wasn't far off from one. The only reason they hadn't wiped out all competition was that the Nine Great Sects would never allow it.
After all, their wealth paled in comparison to the real power of the great sects. And, of course, there was Long Tianjin, who had laid the foundation for the anti-monopoly laws that governed every corner of the Central Region.
Even so, they were still very powerful.
Under their control, and with the backing of the Nine Great Sects and the Celestial Orthodox Martial Alliance, the Immortal Heavenly Capital had very strict entry requirements.
The minimum cultivation level required to enter was the Stellar Sovereign Realm—at least for solitary cultivators. Obviously, the rules were different for the elite.
Almost everyone who wanted in had to have their entry approved first, and about ninety percent failed at this stage alone.
Even among those who passed, the vast majority received only temporary residence permits, valid for a few weeks or months.
Buying property there was even more complicated.
Only one out of every thousand attempts to purchase property in the Immortal Heavenly Capital got approved, and prices were so high that most people simply gave up.
The city only truly filled with people when the major auctions took place and the entry requirements were relaxed considerably.
Then, all a person had to do was prove they met the minimum income requirement to participate in the auction and hold a clean criminal record with the Celestial Unified Orthodox Police Force—which the great families, the sects, and the Alliance also maintained—and they could enter.
"Oh… What are you going to do there, Big Brother Qingyi?" Xiaohu immediately perked up, taking an interest in the conversation.
He rose from the bench, stretching as he downed the last sip of the liquor Bai Hu Lie had given him.
Setting the empty cup aside, he went on.
"I went there with Bai Hu Lie last month, while you were cultivating to reach the Stellar Sovereign Realm. It really is an incredible place."
"I plan to buy a spaceship, and also take little Lingxi to see a bit more of the world before her father goes off to war," Qingyi replied, his expression softening slightly as he spoke of his daughter.
Hearing that, Xiaohu simply nodded.
"You really make me jealous, Big Brother Qingyi. Not only do you have the most adorable little thing in all of the Celestial Heaven, but you can also walk into the Immortal Heavenly Capital whenever you please, since no one would dare stop you…"
Suddenly, Xiaohu's eyes sparkled. He took a step forward, lowering his voice as if sharing a secret.
"Right now, the Divine Maiden of the Divine Maiden Sect just happens to be heading there for a visit… Big Brother Qingyi, why don't you take me with you? The Divine Maiden Sect is a relatively weak power, but every Divine Maiden has always ranked among the top three beauties in all of the Celestial Heaven!"
"Oh?" A look of surprise spread across Qingyi's face.
The current Divine Maiden of the Divine Maiden Sect was Ma Zhenwu's granddaughter, wasn't she?
His father-in-law—Rou'er's adoptive father—had always wanted to marry the two of them to each other.
Qingyi smiled to himself, but the smile didn't last long.
"Too bad some damn arrogant young master from the Zhang Family has set his sights on her." Xiaohu clicked his tongue, his earlier cheerful tone cooling.
"They say this visit is actually in response to an attempt to force a marriage between the two… The Divine Maiden Sect will hardly be able to refuse."
At that moment, Qingyi's eyes turned cold, a flicker of murderous intent passing through them.
Knowing Ma Zhenwu, Qingyi was sure the old man probably didn't hesitate to use his name to try to protect his granddaughter.
The fact that they were still pushing the marriage meant they were ignoring his name.
"Just another pig begging for death..." He grunted. His murderous intent was more than enough to nearly make Xiahu faint.
