The Enchanting Empress Dowager Is Really Poisonous

Volume 2 Chapter 37 - The Secret of the Thousand Shadow Guards! Liang State's Xiao Yan

Chapter 37: The Secret of the Thousand Shadow Guards! Liang State’s Xiao Yan

The plague had finally been brought under control, but Xue Kingdom erupted into war, and the grasslands were also in chaos. The situation was already severe enough, yet the Xue Kingdom dealt such a heavy blow that it left them humiliated. As a major power, their dignity was completely lost. Long Yi remained gloomy all day, causing the civil and military officials to tremble with fear. The court of Feng Yu was more tense than ever. Yet, the culprit behind all this remained indifferent, leisurely residing in the Prince Xuan Manor.

Jin Yu treated Leng Yirou with acupuncture to force out the poison and gave her two precious pills. He also prescribed two new formulas and instructed people to fetch the medicine. Leng Jiu sat beside him watching, showing no concern for his medical skills. When he finished writing the prescriptions and handed them to someone outside, she chuckled softly and spoke:

“I didn’t even give you a reason. Why did you change your mind?”

Jin Yu looked up at her upon hearing this, his eyes flashing as a slight smile appeared on his lips. “Because I realized that instead of getting a perfunctory reason from you, I’d rather come up with one myself. That way, I’d feel more at peace with it.”

“Oh? Tell me, what reason did you come up with?” Leng Jiu asked curiously.

Jin Yu smiled mysteriously. “The Buddha said: ‘It cannot be told!'”

Leng Jiu was speechless. “Since when did you start believing in Buddhism?”

Jin Yu replied smoothly, “Just now!”

Leng Jiu: “…”

Since he didn’t want to elaborate, Leng Jiu didn’t press further. After all, he had already treated Leng Yirou. The results mattered, not the details.

After a few days of recuperation, Leng Yirou’s complexion regained a healthy glow. Though still frail, she looked more human. Leng Jiu patiently stayed by her side, taking care of her. Leng Yirou’s eyes were often filled with tears, but they weren’t of sorrow—they were of joy!

Leng Yirou waved her hand to Leng Jiu, who walked over to hold it, looking at her gently. “What is it? Are you thirsty or hungry?”

Leng Yirou shook her head, gripping her hand tightly as she struggled to sit up. Leng Jiu quickly helped her up. “Do you want to get up?”

Leng Yirou nodded. Seeing that she seemed to have something to do, Leng Jiu bent down to help her put on shoes and carefully supported her to stand.

Leng Yirou pointed towards the study in the next room, so Leng Jiu guided her there. Upon entering, her gaze swept the room before landing on the desk. She urgently patted Leng Jiu’s hand, signaling for her to take her over.

“Alright, let’s go.” Leng Jiu, who had always thought she wasn’t suited for caregiving, realized over the past few days that it wasn’t about suitability but about willingness.

Once Leng Yirou was seated at the desk, she excitedly picked up a brush, spread out the paper, steadied her hand, and began writing. Knowing that Leng Yirou wanted to communicate something, Leng Jiu fixed her eyes on the paper. As soon as the first sentence was written, Leng Jiu was astonished.

“The handkerchief sent to the General’s residence seven years ago was a map hiding the command token!”

After writing this, Leng Yirou added three more words: “Thousand Shadow Guards!”

Leng Jiu quickly tore the paper into pieces, her expression turning slightly grave. “That Xia family man was after this, wasn’t he?”

Leng Yirou nodded and continued writing: “The Thousand Shadow Guards are spread across the world with many branches. Xia Zhengguo is a member of the Guards’ Ministry of War, a confidant of the late emperor, and a pawn placed in the Leng family.”

Xia Zhengguo—that was the name of the deputy general. He turned out to be a confidant of the late emperor, no wonder he rose so swiftly!

“Was it under Long Yi’s orders that he sought the token? But wasn’t the token always in the hands of the late emperor? Since I was the last to see him, Long Yi and the others suspect it’s with me!”

Leng Yirou handed another piece of paper to Leng Jiu and wrote: “There are seven command tokens for the Thousand Shadow Guards: Main, Guard, War, Finance, Government, Spy, and Punishment. When united, they command the entire empire. The late emperor only had the War and Spy tokens. The War token was supposed to be with Xia Zhengguo, but your father’s confidant discovered his secret, stole the token, and hid it. Before being killed by Xia Zhengguo, he revealed the location to me. I’m the only one in the world who knows.”

Leng Jiu was shocked. “So that’s how it is. He married you solely for the token?”

Leng Yirou nodded.

“What about the other tokens? Are there any leads?”

Leng Yirou wrote: “I don’t know much. If you can find someone connected to the Thousand Shadow Guards, they might tell you more. You could also ask your father.”

Leng Jiu smiled. “Thank you!”

Leng Yirou pursed her lips in a soft smile, looking at her tenderly.

Leng Jiu collected the paper and went to burn it until only ashes remained. Then she walked back, held Leng Yirou’s hand, and helped her up. “This is Prince Xuan’s manor, the safest place for you. They’ll never suspect you’re here. Your throat will heal soon, and I’m looking forward to hearing you say something to me yourself!”

Leng Yirou held her hand tightly, her face full of affection.

Leng Jiu helped her back to her room to rest. “I need to return to the palace for a while. You rest here, and I’ll come back to see you later!”

Leng Yirou nodded before closing her eyes to sleep.

Leng Jiu summoned Long Yueli’s shadow guards and asked them to assign a woman to care for Leng Yirou. She then changed her clothes, preparing to leave.

“You’re leaving?” Jin Yu walked in from behind the screen.

Leng Jiu continued changing her clothes, swiftly donning her eunuch attire and tying her hair before putting on her cap. “There’s something I need to handle back at the palace.”

Jin Yu stood by, watching her actions silently.

After finishing, Leng Jiu turned to him and smiled. “What? Are you reluctant to let me go?”

Jin Yu didn’t respond. Leng Jiu took two steps closer to him, raised her hand to trace his face, and teased with a grin, “Tsk, tsk! Even an otherworldly immortal has fallen for me. My charm is truly unparalleled!”

Jin Yu suddenly grabbed her hand and wrapped an arm around her waist, lowering his head to capture her lips. He quickly parted her lips and launched an intense kiss. Leng Jiu smiled inwardly, raising her hand to hook it around his neck, letting him kiss her as he pleased.

After a long time, Jin Yu finally released her, his eyes dark and intense. “I really want to have you!”

Leng Jiu froze for a moment and looked at him. “Aren’t you afraid he’ll kill you?”

“Not afraid!” Jin Yu bit her lips lightly and declared with determination in his eyes, “You will be mine!”

Leng Jiu tapped his forehead. “I’ll be waiting!”

She adjusted her sleeves and walked out of the courtyard, planning to head straight back to the palace, but unexpectedly ran into Hua Ruir.

“Stop right there!” Hua Ruir charged over, furious, her face twisted in anger.

Leng Jiu halted and looked at her, raising an eyebrow. “What now?”

Hua Ruir stormed over, her originally cute face contorted with anger. She raised her hand to slap Leng Jiu, but Leng Jiu caught her wrist, her gaze cold. “You’re not qualified to hit me!”

“Slut!” Hua Ruir glared at her angrily. “First, you seduce Brother Yue Li, and now you’re seducing another man. Shameless!”

“I’m shameless?” Leng Jiu chuckled, gripping Hua Ruir’s chin with her other hand, forcing her face into a distorted expression. She smirked seductively. “Are you angry? Or jealous?”

“Don’t you like Long Yueli? If you have the skills, seduce him back. Oh, Jin Yu is also quite handsome, just as good-looking as your Brother Yue Li. Why not try seducing him? If you manage to win one of them over, I’ll call it your talent. But if you can’t even do that, then don’t bark at me. I’m not a man, so don’t expect any tender feelings from me!”

Hua Ruir’s face turned red with anger, her eyes blazing. “You…”

“A slut, right? I know that’s what you want to say. But could you come up with something new? Such a cute little face, yet every word out of your mouth is filthy. It’s really disgusting!” Leng Jiu smirked evilly, trailing her fingers along Hua Ruir’s cheek. “What if I were to scar this pretty little face? Wouldn’t that be more harmonious?”

“You wouldn’t dare!”

“Don’t say that. I can’t stand reverse psychology. If I really made a move, things could get ugly!” Leng Jiu’s smile was alluring. “But I’m genuinely curious—when that time comes, will your Yue Li brother side with you or with me? Want to make a bet?”

“You scoundrel!” Hua Rui’er felt a pang of fear in her heart. The more bewitchingly Leng Jiu smiled, the more panicked she felt.

Leng Jiu threw her aside impatiently, clapping her hands as if dusting them off. “All you do is scream and shout—I’m not even interested in taking you on. Next time, bring some real skills to the table, or I’ll feel like it’s beneath me!”

With that, she turned and walked away without looking back.

“You wretch!” Hua Rui’er suddenly drew the soft sword from her waist and lunged at Leng Jiu’s back.

Without even blinking, Leng Jiu continued walking. Just as the sword was about to pierce her back, a surge of internal energy shattered it. With a flick of her white sleeve, Hua Rui’er was sent flying into a rockery. Her body slammed against it, spitting blood. Clearly, the one who struck hadn’t held back at all.

Jin Yu glanced at the empty doorway and shook her sleeves helplessly. “Sending someone like her to seduce me? And without hesitation either. Should I say you have too much faith in me or no conscience at all?”

Back at the palace, in Weiyang Palace, everything seemed normal. Qing Ling recited scriptures and tapped her wooden fish daily. The sound could be heard outside the palace. No one suspected that the Empress Dowager wasn’t there, and Long Yi hadn’t come by either, so naturally, everything was as usual.

Leng Jiu changed into palace attire and grabbed the chirping Kano, placing it in her lap as she stroked it gently. She sat down, closing her eyes in contemplation. Seeing that she seemed preoccupied, neither Ziyu nor Qing Ling disturbed her. Only Lu Chang stood quietly by her side.

Leng Jiu silently recited in her mind: Lord, Guard, Soldier, Wealth, Politics, Scout, Punishment—Qianying Wei! Qianying Wei…

Suddenly, she opened her eyes, a flash of clarity in them, and then she smiled lightly. “Lu Chang!”

“At your service!”

“How is Eunuch Fu doing recently?”

Lu Chang paused briefly before replying calmly, “Thank you for your concern, Empress Dowager. The old master is doing well.”

“I haven’t seen Eunuch Fu in years. I do miss him. I feel like paying him a visit suddenly.”

“If the old master knew the Empress Dowager cared so much, he would be overjoyed. When would you like to go, so I can make the necessary arrangements?”

Leng Jiu stood up. “No time like the present. Let’s keep this low-key and leave the palace incognito.”

“Understood.”

Two hours later, a plain carriage stopped in front of an unmarked residence. Lu Chang, dressed in simple clothes, stepped down and lifted the curtain. “Empress Dowager, we’ve arrived.”

Leng Jiu placed her hand on his arm and stepped out, dressed simply as a common woman, looking ordinary and unassuming.

After Leng Jiu alighted, Lu Chang went to knock on the door. Soon, a white-haired elderly man in his sixties or seventies opened it. Upon seeing Lu Chang, he said nothing, opening the door to let them in.

The courtyard was simple and ordinary, without any opulence or many servants. This surprised Leng Jiu and made her more curious about Eunuch Fu.

After passing through two corridors, they finally arrived at a pavilion, where they saw an elderly man with graying hair. His complexion was fairer than most elderly people, and his demeanor exuded a refined elegance. This must be Eunuch Fu.

“For this old bag of bones to warrant a personal visit from the Empress Dowager, I am overwhelmed with honor!” Eunuch Fu stood up and cupped his hands in greeting. His slightly clouded eyes were particularly spirited at this moment.

Leng Jiu raised her hand slightly in acknowledgment and directly sat down opposite him. “I came because I was idle and wanted to hear Eunuch Fu tell a story. Would you be willing to entertain me?”

Eunuch Fu smiled as he sat down. “If it’s your command, how could I refuse? What would you like to hear?”

Leng Jiu looked at him. Her eyes were clear and discerning. She knew he understood her real purpose, so she smiled faintly. “Let’s start with the origin of Qianying Wei.”

Eunuch Fu took the tea handed to him by a young eunuch, placed it in front of Leng Jiu, and began:

“Qianying Wei’s story begins with the founding of the Fengyu Kingdom. Back then, the land was ravaged by wars, with factions dividing it into dozens of territories. Constant conflicts and bloodshed prevailed. Among these factions, the Long family was the strongest, followed by the martial arts powerhouse Hua family, the military strategists Leng family, the wealthy Ziche family, the politically shrewd He family, the intelligence-driven Hu family, and the Xiao family. Together, they held sway over sixty percent of what is now Fengyu and Liang Kingdoms. Smaller forces were negligible in comparison.”

“These seven powers were deadlocked until the Long family patriarch, the founding emperor of Fengyu, played a game of chess with the He family patriarch, winning his allegiance. With the He family’s support, the balance was broken. The Ziche family, rich and envied, became the Long family’s next target. After their defeat, only two collateral branches of the Ziche family remained to serve the Long family.”

“The Leng family could have rivaled the Long family, but their patriarch died suddenly. Succession battles ensued among his descendants, leading to their downfall. With five families united under the Long family, the remaining two—Hu and Xiao—had no choice but to submit. Thus, the seven great families merged under the Long family’s leadership. However, mutual distrust persisted, giving rise to Qianying Wei.”

“Qianying Wei consisted of seven tokens: one held by the Long family as the leader, with the other six distributed among the auxiliary families. This elite group was ranked above all nobility. If a Long family emperor proved incompetent, the seven tokens could be united to appoint a new ruler. This arrangement stabilized the alliance of the seven families. Operating in the shadows, Qianying Wei remained largely unknown.”

“The Long family eventually unified the land, ushering in a century of peace. But then, the Xiao family produced a stunning beauty, sought after by scions of several families. In the end, the emperor forcibly brought her into the palace, but she was brutally tortured to death within three days. Outraged, the Xiao family retaliated, leading to the most significant upheaval in Qianying Wei’s history.”

“The Xiao family patriarch, a charismatic and brilliant man, was enraged by the death of his beloved sister. He killed the emperor, triggering a purge that nearly wiped out his family. To save them, he destroyed his token and retreated east with his followers. From there, he launched a rebellion, carving out what is now Liang Kingdom. The Qianying Wei tokens were lost during this war, and despite sporadic rediscoveries over the centuries, they’ve never been reunited.”

Leng Jiu listened quietly, then chuckled. “Except for the Xiao and Long families, the other five were split between the two nations. That was an agreement from centuries ago—who would still honor it? Even if the tokens were reunited, what would it matter?”

Eunuch Fu smiled. “You’re not wrong, Empress Dowager. But don’t forget, both the Late Emperor and the previous Emperor wielded Qianying Wei tokens. One used it to quell a rebellion seventy years ago, while the other ascended the throne with its help. Some things remain unpredictable, and as for the true history, who can say what’s accurate?”

“Fair enough,” Leng Jiu agreed, nodding slightly. After a pause, she looked at Eunuch Fu. “If my calculations are correct, the Hu family’s token should be in your possession, no?”

Eunuch Fu chuckled. “I expected you to ask me that eventually.”

Leng Jiu smirked. “You held the token but pretended to search my quarters, making everyone think it was with me. Cunning, aren’t you?”

Eunuch Fu waved his hand. “You’re mistaken, Empress Dowager. The token was once mine, but it now resides with you, though you’re unaware.”

Leng Jiu raised an eyebrow, glancing instinctively at Lu Chang. Seeing his smiling eyes, she understood and questioned, “Eunuch Fu, what game are you playing with me?”

Eunuch Fu sipped his tea. “You should ask yourself how you won his unwavering loyalty. That’s the question I’ve been dying to ask you.”

Leng Jiu laughed, rising to her feet. “I’ll have to ponder that. It’s late; I should return to the palace.”

“Take care, Empress Dowager. Forgive this old man for not escorting you out.”

“No matter.” Leng Jiu walked out, leaving without hesitation.

Just as she stepped outside, Eunuch Fu’s voice rang out. “One last piece of information, Empress Dowager. Do you recall the Imperial Tutor’s surname?”

Leng Jiu paused briefly before continuing forward. “Thank you. If I have time, I’ll return to hear more stories.”

Eunuch Fu chuckled. “As long as I’m still alive, you’re always welcome.”

As they exited the residence and the door closed behind them, Leng Jiu smiled faintly. “Lu Chang, you’ve been hiding things from me quite diligently.”

Lu Chang replied calmly, without any hint of embarrassment. “I always believed you’d figure it out eventually, Empress Dowager.”

Leng Jiu scoffed. “Is that supposed to be a compliment?”

“Of course.”

“Flatterer!” She rolled her eyes at him before stepping into the carriage.

They didn’t head directly back to the palace. Instead, the carriage stopped at the General’s Mansion. Leng Jiu dragged out a shadow guard, ordering him to disclose the secret compartments in the old general’s study. She ransacked the place but found only weapons and calligraphy, nothing else.

Tossing aside what she held, Leng Jiu dusted her hands. “Looks like I’ll have to play a round with this father I’ve never met.”

Leaving the General’s Mansion, they returned to the palace without detours. She decided to postpone visiting the Xuan Prince’s residence.

Upon her arrival, Du Heng reported, “Your Majesty, the Emperor of Liang Kingdom has unexpectedly arrived and is currently being received by our Emperor.”

Leng Jiu raised an eyebrow, her lips curving into a smile. “Ah, so the Liang Kingdom’s people are here. Things are getting interesting.”

Lu Chang stepped forward with a grin. “Would you like to meet him, Empress Dowager? They say the current Emperor of Liang is young and handsome, dressed in regal purple, no less impressive than the Xuan Prince.”

A dangerous gleam flickered in Leng Jiu’s eyes. “Lu Chang, are you suggesting I’m obsessed with good looks?”

Lu Chang’s calm demeanor remained unshaken. “Would you like to meet him, Empress Dowager?”

“Of course,” Leng Jiu affirmed. Then, as an afterthought, she added, “But I’m interested in his status as emperor, not his appearance.”

“Understood,” Lu Chang replied.

Leng Jiu kicked him lightly in exasperation. “Got it, my foot!”

The Fengyu and Liang kingdoms had been at peace for nearly a century. While there was no deep-seated hatred between them, neither could they be described as particularly friendly. Due to their complicated history from centuries ago, a subtle, indescribable tension always lingered between their people. Now, with the Fengyu Kingdom facing a national crisis, the Liang Emperor’s sudden visit was bound to raise suspicions.

Although Long Yi was reluctant to entertain the visit, as the ruler of a major kingdom, he could not afford to behave in a petty manner. Thus, he ordered a banquet to be arranged in the imperial garden, with officials of the fourth rank and above accompanying the guest.

“Forgive me for the intrusion. If I have acted presumptuously, I ask for the Feng Emperor’s understanding,” said the Liang Emperor, Xiao Yan. He was dressed in a luxurious robe of gold-threaded crimson-purple cloud brocade, his waist bound with a wide sash, and a jade crown adorned with dangling ornaments on his head. His features were exceptionally refined, his expression gentle and serene. Although his frame was slightly slender, it could not overshadow the noble aura and natural grace he exuded. Compared to Long Yi’s imposing presence, Xiao Yan appeared more like a young master from an aristocratic family out for a leisurely trip. This was the youngest ruler of the Liang Kingdom.

Long Yi forced a polite smile, though it didn’t reach his eyes. “You honor us with your presence, Liang Emperor. It is our pleasure to host you.”

Xiao Yan also smiled, his expression far more genuine. His already remarkable appearance became even more mesmerizing with his smile. Sensing an intense, disapproving gaze on him, Xiao Yan turned to its source. “Prince Xuan, you’ve been staring at me for some time. Do you have some advice for me?”

Long Yue’s expression was written plainly across his face: displeasure. His countenance was sour, though no one could quite guess why. Upon being addressed, he pulled on a frosty smile. “Advice? I wouldn’t dare. I was merely considering that the Liang Emperor has been away from home for quite some time. Liang Kingdom must have pressing matters of state. While our emperor is known for his hospitality, it wouldn’t be proper to delay the Liang Emperor for long.”

The words were unmistakably a dismissal. However, Xiao Yan seemed entirely unaffected. With a faint smile, he replied, “I appreciate Prince Xuan’s concern. However, I seldom involve myself in governance. My ministers and younger brother manage state affairs well in my absence. Even if I were to travel for a year or more, it would not cause any disruption.”

Long Yueli was taken aback and retorted, “You place a great deal of trust in them, Liang Emperor.”

“They are family. Why would I not trust them?” Xiao Yan countered lightly.

Feeling like he had met his match, Long Yueli shifted topics. “I’ve heard that the Liang Emperor’s palace has no consorts or concubines. Is that true?”

“Indeed, it is true. I lack the Feng Emperor’s fortune. My harem has always remained empty,” Xiao Yan said with a glance toward Long Yi, answering with poise.

Long Yueli raised a wine cup to conceal his smirk. “With the Liang Emperor’s outstanding character, I’m sure there are many women who admire you. Could it be that there’s no one in the world who catches your eye? Or is there some unspoken reason?”

His words crossed the line, as no man would take kindly to being questioned in such a way. Even the most patient of temperaments would find it offensive. Yet Xiao Yan remained unfazed, his expression unchanged.

“I have a fiancée. She was betrothed to me at birth and is destined to be my empress. The primary reason for my travels this time, apart from exploring the lands, is to find her. Once we are wed, I will surely send an invitation to Prince Xuan to join us in celebration,” Xiao Yan replied, his tone calm yet sharp, before adding, “By the way, I’ve also heard a bit about Prince Xuan. Whether it’s in the capital or in your southern fief, it seems you, too, have no wives or concubines. I’m quite curious about that as well.”

The remark was thrown back at Long Yue. Though Xiao Yan’s tone was casual and lacking aggression, it still hit its mark. Long Yue’s displeasure flared briefly before he managed to suppress it. He didn’t need to prove himself. After all, a certain woman had already affirmed his worth. He drank his wine to avoid further discussion. “May I ask which family’s daughter is fortunate enough to be the Liang Emperor’s fiancée, such that you remain devoted to her all these years?”

Xiao Yan lightly turned the jade cup in his slender, pale fingers. “She is the daughter of the Ziche family. She was betrothed to me as an infant. To be honest, I’ve only seen her once, swaddled in her crib.”

Long Yueli rolled his eyes at the thought of waiting years for someone he barely knew, something he himself could never do. However, he believed Xiao Yan’s sincerity. That knowledge set him at ease—if Xiao Yan was faithful to his fiancée, then his attention wouldn’t wander. That was one less potential problem to worry about. He wasn’t overreacting or being petty; he knew all too well how captivating a certain woman could be. If she had once been able to win over Jin Yu despite his resistance, he couldn’t afford to let her charm stir trouble again.

Just as Long Yueli finished mulling things over, an eunuch’s voice rang out from outside. “The Empress Dowager has arrived!”

Hearing this, the officials immediately stood to bow in greeting. Only three individuals remained seated, though they shifted slightly: Long Yue, Long Yi, and Xiao Yan. All three directed their gazes toward the entrance, each harboring different emotions as they awaited her arrival.

Today, Leng Jiu was dressed in a dark black gown embroidered with large golden peonies. Her elaborate hairstyle was adorned with phoenix hairpins and delicate floral ornaments. Her steps were graceful and steady, her aura radiating nobility. Her light makeup accentuated her striking beauty, with a red lotus motif painted on her forehead, rendering her breathtakingly stunning. Yet few dared to meet her gaze.

The moment Long Yueli saw her, dissatisfaction flashed across his face. Why did she have to dress so beautifully, drawing unnecessary attention?

Long Yi’s expression was complex. He should have hated her, deeply and utterly. Yet every time he saw her face, the weight of his hatred seemed to lift, suppressed by other emotions.

As for Xiao Yan, he remained composed, his usual faint smile still gracing his lips. Yet there was a trace of amazement in his eyes.

“I have long heard of the Liang Emperor’s exceptional reputation. Now that I’ve had the pleasure of meeting you, it seems the tales were true,” Leng Jiu remarked with a smile, her gaze sweeping over Long Yueli and Long Yi before finally settling on Xiao Yan. While her initial glance contained a flicker of admiration, it held no significant ripple of emotion. Xiao Yan was indeed handsome, no less so than Long Yueli or Jin Yu, yet his charm was entirely distinct. His demeanor was that of a noble young master, refined and cultivated, but with an underlying depth and steadiness. Coupled with his natural composure, there was an unmistakable aura of dignity about him—qualities not found in a mere ordinary emperor.

“You flatter me, Empress Dowager,” Xiao Yan replied modestly, his tone carrying an understated elegance. “However, your beauty is truly astonishing.”

“You certainly have a way with words,” Leng Jiu said with a laugh, walking toward Long Yi. Her gaze openly lingered on him. “I heard of the Liang Emperor’s visit and was curious to come by. I hope His Majesty doesn’t mind my presence.”

Long Yi shot her a meaningful look before motioning for a table to be set beside him. Attendants quickly arranged it, draping it in yellow silk and laying out fine dishes and tableware.

Leng Jiu sat down gracefully. “It has been some time since we’ve sat together like this, Your Majesty. I must say, I rather miss it.”

Long Yi scoffed coldly. “If the war in the northern deserts ends, and the people find peace, then the Empress Dowager can join me like this whenever she wishes.”

Leng Jiu raised her wine cup, smiling. “You’re absolutely right, Your Majesty. I, too, hope for an early resolution to the conflict and for peace across the land. I hear that Prince Xiao has recently suffered a defeat. I wonder who His Majesty plans to send to the front lines to decisively conquer the Xue Kingdom?”

Long Yi’s gaze sharpened as he stared at her. “Who does the Empress Dowager suggest? How about the Grand General of the Left Guard?”

Leng Jiu gave it some thought before nodding. “If Your Majesty trusts him, my elder brother is indeed an excellent choice. He is well-loved and has rarely tasted defeat in battle.”

Her implication was clear: if her brother triumphed, he would not only gain fame but also further solidify his influence, possibly challenging the emperor’s authority. Did Long Yi dare to take that risk?

Long Yi, aware of the subtext, turned away with a grim expression. “Such matters are best discussed in the Imperial Study. Today, we have the Liang Emperor as our guest. Let’s not neglect him.”

Leng Jiu glanced at Xiao Yan, whose serene demeanor hadn’t changed in the slightest, as if he hadn’t overheard their exchange. With a faint smile, she raised her cup. “May I have the honor of sharing a toast with the Liang Emperor?”

“It would be my honor,” Xiao Yan replied gracefully, raising his cup.

Leng Jiu downed the wine in one swift motion, then took a piece of fruit and began eating, her gaze resting on the distant performers without another word.

Seeing that she had no further schemes, Long Yi relaxed slightly and resumed chatting idly with Xiao Yan, occasionally raising a cup of wine. The banquet carried on without further incident.

The evening concluded peacefully, with Leng Jiu’s presence causing no significant disruption. The smoothness of it all left Long Yi uneasy, unable to discern her true intentions.

“Too sweet!” Leng Jiu exclaimed upon returning to the Palace of Everlasting Peace. Puffing her cheeks, she looked utterly pitiful.

Ziyu sighed. “You ate two plates of candied fruits, Your Majesty. How could it not be too sweet?”

Leng Jiu rubbed her face. “It was just to pass the time.”

Xiangming, carrying a cup of tea, entered and teased, “Weren’t Prince Xuan and the Liang Emperor there? How could it have been boring?”

“They were sitting so far away. What’s the use?” Leng Jiu pouted.

Xiangming set the tea beside her. “Didn’t Prince Xuan ignore you?”

Leng Jiu raised an eyebrow. “How do you know?” Indeed, Long Yueli had scarcely glanced at her all evening.

With an air of certainty, Xiangming replied, “The Liang Emperor must be extraordinarily handsome, perhaps even on par with Prince Xuan?”

Leng Jiu nodded sincerely. “Though their beauty can’t be directly compared, the Liang Emperor is indeed a rare gem.”

Xiangming smirked knowingly. “Then you’re on your own.”

Leng Jiu paused before realizing the implication. “No way! Would his jealousy really flare up over something like this?”

Xiangming gestured toward the window. “You’ll find out soon enough!” With that, she grabbed Ziyu and disappeared.

Leng Jiu blinked. “…”

No sooner had they left than Long Yueli entered through the window. His crimson robe hung loosely, exuding a devil-may-care allure. Yet his smile carried an inexplicable chill.

Seeing Leng Jiu staring at him, Long Yueli raised a brow mischievously. “What’s wrong? Not happy to see me?”

“Your expression is off, your tone is off. Long Yue, how many jars of vinegar did you drink tonight?”

Danger glimmered in Long Yue’s narrowed eyes. “You dare to ask?”

“I’ve done nothing wrong! Can’t you stop being so jealous?” Leng Jiu protested.

“And Jin Yu?” he demanded.

Leng Jiu sighed. “He came to me on his own. I’m innocent!”

“Innocent?” Long Yue’s gaze turned wicked, his smile mocking as he advanced. In one swift motion, he swept her up and flung her onto the bed. “Let me show you what innocent means!”

Lying on the bed, Leng Jiu could only sigh. “Long Yue, must you always stew in jealousy? If you don’t mind the discomfort, I’m getting tired just watching you.”

“Then think about who threw me into this vat of vinegar to begin with!” Long Yueli growled, leaning over her and biting her ear. “So, you think he’s good-looking? Exceptional

“Innocent?” Long Yueli had a wicked expression, his face half-smiling, and his breath was dangerously close as he walked over and suddenly tossed Leng Jiu onto the large bed. “Let me show you what ‘innocent’ really means!”

Leng Jiu lay there, utterly speechless. “Long Yueli! Can you stop soaking in the vinegar jar all the time? If you’re not uncomfortable, I feel uncomfortable just watching!”

“Then don’t forget who put me in it,” Long Yueli said, dangerously closing in.

Leng Jiu replied, “…I didn’t do anything today, and I didn’t even pay much attention to that Liang Huang. What kind of vinegar are you drinking?”

“Then why did you bother looking so beautiful? Aren’t you afraid of blinding people’s eyes?” Long Yueli pressed his body against hers, pinning her down, and angrily bit her ear. “He’s handsome, right? Impressive? No matter how impressive he is, don’t get any ideas. He already has a fiancée. He’s not for you!”

Leng Jiu was completely helpless. “Long Yueli! Did Jin Yu slip you some medicine? Have you lost your mind?”

Long Yueli’s eyes turned even more dangerous. His large hand slid up along her waist. “I’ll let you see whether I’ve lost my mind!”

“Mm…” Leng Jiu’s lips were sealed. Before she could resist, Long Yueli trapped her hands and feet, showering her with kisses and caresses, like a wild storm that she could barely withstand. Leng Jiu was almost suffocated by the kiss, and her body felt like it was being crushed. Just as she could no longer take it, he suddenly stopped, lying motionless on top of her.

Leng Jiu’s mind cleared, and her heart slowly settled. She knew exactly why Long Yueli was acting this way—his uncertainty and insecurity. All of this was because of her. The people around her made this proud man so fragile and full of doubts!

At this moment, he lay quietly on top of her, but she could feel his unease, fear, and sorrow. Her heart ached, feeling both pain and tenderness. She raised her hand to wrap around his waist, inhaling his scent deeply. She had once thought her greatest love was Gong Yu Wei, because his innocence made her accept him without resistance. But after so much time and changes, it was only at this moment that she truly understood her own heart. It was Long Yueli, this strong man who tore open her heart and settled inside, growing roots and connecting with her blood and flesh—irrevocable!

She liked Gong Yu Wei, and Gong Yu Wei liked her, but her feelings for him were pure, without any attachments. However, Gong Yu Wei had too many rules and restrictions, and he couldn’t give her the response she needed! Hua Jin also loved her, but most of the time, she was the one indulging him. Only Long Yueli, only he, wholeheartedly accommodated her. His love and hate were all for her, and he swallowed his own pain, bitterness, and sorrow. Even though his heart was filled with wounds, he never hurt her!

At this moment, Leng Jiu felt both sweetness and bitterness in her heart. True love, as described in books, was indeed beautiful and alluring, but it could also cause unbearable pain. She had just tasted the beauty of love between a man and a woman, only to immediately face its torment. She no longer knew what to do!

Staring blankly at the ceiling, after a long while, Leng Jiu suddenly spoke. “Li! Let’s have a child!” Hearing these words, Long Yueli trembled uncontrollably, quickly raising his head to look at Leng Jiu, his face full of disbelief. “What did you just say?”

Seeing his expression, Leng Jiu’s heart hurt even more. She reached up and gently stroked his handsome face. “I’m sorry I can’t give you what you want most, but I’m willing to give you a child, one with both your and my blood—our only child!”

Long Yueli stared at her without expression for a long time. Leng Jiu’s heart suddenly panicked. She didn’t understand his reaction and suddenly hugged him. “I just feel sorry for you. My heart is also in turmoil right now. I don’t know how to make you feel at ease. If you don’t like it, just pretend I never said it!”

Long Yueli pulled her into his embrace, sighed deeply, and said, “Silly girl! How could I not like it? It’s just that I thought this idea was too distant, too extravagant, and I never dared to think about it. Hearing you say it now, I’m so happy that I forgot to respond!”

Leng Jiu’s heart began to settle. “Li! I—”

Long Yueli raised his hand to cover her lips. “Don’t say anything else. My heart has never been this happy and content. Don’t disturb me. Let me hold you properly!”

Leng Jiu wrapped her arms around him, gently closing her eyes. In this moment, there was no desire, only a deep flow of love.
