Chapter 263 263: The Tale of Amon the Great (5)
Moving the clock back a few minutes.
The Sword Saint and the Sky Spear hovered high above, their eyes locked on the relentless downpour of meteors. Following Amon's orders, they fought desperately to prevent Zephys's complete annihilation. Around the Sword Saint, ten thousand sword phantoms shimmered into being, each one striking the falling space stones with growing precision and force.
Though nearing a century in age, Kassadin Bromm moved with the vigour of an eighteen-year-old. He soared through the air, commanding his myriad blades to cleave through a descending meteor before it could crash into the faltering barrier below.
Yet, despite his efforts, fragments still slipped through—slamming into the barrier and further weakening its integrity. Worse still, the half-shattered meteors rained down like shrapnel, tearing through the capital and levelling countless buildings.
Were it not for Alrock's tireless coordination of the rescue efforts, thousands more would have perished in the wake of the Sword Saint's own destructive counterattack.
"Hey, cool it will ya?! My old bones can't keep up with your ruckus!"
"Alrock… You've been slacking off. The previous you would have moved much faster."
"You bastard…"
Alrock growled at the Sword Saint's sly remark. If not for their current predicament, Alrock would have challenged the Sword Saint into a full-on battle to determine if his blade had truly gone rusty.
Unfortunately, the Sword Saint wasn't the one Alrock should be concerned about.
BOOM!!!
Just like the Sword Saint, Manon charged at a falling meteor with his treasured spear, slamming into it with the force of a thousand elephants. The meteor had no chance, and its path was redirected away from the capital; it eventually crashed near the civilian escape route.
The Solaris Lord nearly had a stroke while witnessing Manon's carelessness.
"Oy! Are you trying to stop this old man's heart?! Don't redirect the meteors there!"
"Old? I'm way older than you."
"Tch, that's not the point!"
Alrock cursed as he finally understood why Amon had put him in charge of the rescue efforts. These two nutjobs had immense power but lacked control. If no one cleaned up after them, they could have dealt more damage than the meteors themselves.
The trio continued their defence as the Sword Saint unconsciously kept an eye on the Sky Spear. While he'd heard the backstory from Amon, seeing the ancient man in action was truly an eye-opener. Manon's physique was superhuman, and his spearmanship was almost equal to his swordsmanship. But the true puzzling thing was…
'Why does he feel so similar to Bawi?'
The Sword Saint mused as he thought about his adopted granddaughter.
The pair looked nothing alike. One was youthful and graceful, while the other was ancient and indomitable. But, as the one closest to Bawi, he could tell that Manon and she shared some innate similarities.
'Their origin… might be the same.'
The Sword Saint thought to himself but said nothing. After all, they had more pressing matters to handle.
The pair continued to deflect and destroy as many meteors as they could, all while the evacuation efforts happened beneath them. While it was impossible to stop the hundreds of meteors falling with just two people, they managed to minimise the casualties.
But what they didn't expect… was the monstrous darkened sky that came afterwards.
As the meteor shower neared its end, a colossal mass descended from the heavens… an unfathomable meteor, a thousand times larger than any before it. Its sheer presence warped the air, pulling at both the Sword Saint and the Sky Spear as if gravity itself bent to its will.
There was no doubt in their minds—if that meteor struck, the capital would be obliterated.
"Urgh, we're so fucked."
Manon spat while lowering his spear.
Even if he used every ounce of the mana he stored, Manon doubted that he could even stop the descent of that madness.
The same with the Sword Saint. He stood at the pinnacle of humanity, but the threat above his head was something no humans could ever stop. A meteor of that size could cause a mass extinction, let alone the destruction of the capital.
"It was nice knowing you guys," the Sword Saint laughed.
Kassadin may have once been the Lord Protector of the Realm, but even he was worthless against that monstrosity. Hence, he sought to grab Bawi and escape as far as possible.
However, his retreat was stopped when a familiar voice beckoned to him.
"Lord Kassadin… Please wait."
Ripples appeared in the void as Amon glided towards the Sword Saint. His enemies' blood soaked his clothes while Nyx was still humming in anticipation. The Sword Saint felt his skin crawl when he observed the young man who was filled with killing intent.
"Amon? What happened to the Apostles?"
"They retreated after Starfall was completed. I didn't bother to give chase."
Amon replied with a helpless sigh. With his current capability, he could have easily tracked the Demon Cult and massacred the Apostles while they were weak. But the young hero chose not to.
Ultimately, even though killing the Apostles was necessary… it was far more critical to save the lives of everyone in the capital.
And that meant… destroying the final meteor.
"Amon… We tried our best." The Sword Saint spoke solemnly. "Let's retreat for now. With our speed, we can still save those in Eldorin."
"No, that's not necessary."
Amon shook his head and rose higher into the sky, his golden eyes never leaving the colossal meteor. Every fragment of energy within his soul surged outward in unison. Around him, nine moons and seven suns revolved in perfect harmony, casting him in the image of an ethereal war god… one who could unmake the world with a single strike.
Even the Sword Saint, the Sky Spear, and the Solaris Lord, three of the mightiest beings alive, could scarcely believe what they were witnessing. Amon's mana swelled beyond comprehension, and before their eyes, his very form began to transform.
Pure black-white energy surrounded the young Knight, and his presence became fainter by the second. No, it felt like his presence had transcended their very senses. At this stage, Amon wasn't merely a human.
A god?
An immortal?
Or was he the embodiment of the sun and moon?
None of them could tell.
But one thing was for certain.
Amon had now surpassed them all.
[Eclipse Mystic Arts: Twilight.]
The Sun and the Moon combined to create a total eclipse.
Endless amounts of mana flowed from Amon's soul into Nyx, and the Heroic-grade weapon showcased its might. Even with a near infinite amount of mana within it, the black blade didn't show any sign of breaking.
Rather it thrived.
Suddenly, everyone's attention was now focused on the lone man standing before the falling meteor.
The capital's mightiest, the talented next generation, and even the mere mortals who were trying their hardest to escape. They all paused and watched Amon rise beyond their reach.
[Survive.]
Amon's solemn voice resonated in everyone's minds, greatly shocking them.
In fact, Amon himself didn't know he had sent a message to everyone present. He was entirely focused on the falling meteor, unable to notice his newly ascended power.
Unknowingly, Amon had reached a state that no other human had before him. Not even the invincible Solaris Saint and mighty Solaris Founder had touched that realm.
The realm of the divine.
Amon shot upward, cutting through the sky like a golden comet, his gaze locked onto the titanic meteor above. The world around him blurred into nothing, there was only the falling mass and the rhythm of his own heartbeat.
Every ounce of power within him, every thread of mana in his veins, converged at a single point—the tip of Nyx, his blade trembling under the unbearable concentration of energy.
The heavens roared as he broke through the clouds, the pressure distorting the very fabric of space. When he finally reached the brink, the point of no return, Amon let out a breath that carried the weight of worlds and unleashed everything.
[Eclipse Mystic Arts: Infinity.]
Amon's ultimate attack.
A move that he'd only used once, when he crippled the Prophet.
Last time, Amon had barely learnt the move. It was simply a concept that he had tried out. But now that he had his nine moons, he could unleash the earth-shattering move in its entirety.
A beam of black and white light tore through the sky, colliding head-on with the meteor. The impact alone was enough to slow its descent, but Amon had no intention of merely stalling it. He poured every last drop of mana into Nyx, forcing the weapon to channel power beyond mortal limits.
Cracks began to spread across the meteor's surface, glowing like veins of molten silver. Flames surged and wrapped around Amon's body, burning through the air, yet he paid them no mind.
With one final surge, his blade released an infinite slash that split the heavens—and the meteor shattered into a million fragments.
It was a surreal sight: a massive stone mass reduced to dust and rubble.
Amon had achieved the impossible.
Yet even victory carried ruin. The fragmented debris rained down like molten shrapnel, tearing through the capital and obliterating half the city. Drained beyond measure, Amon could no longer sustain Infinity. His body trembled, his mana nearly spent—but his task was done. The rest would fall to his allies.
High above, the Sword Saint, the Sky Spear, and the Solaris Lord joined forces, shielding the evacuation routes and turning the skies into a fortress of light.
Meanwhile, Leon and the warriors of Eldorin streaked across the city, destroying fragment after fragment, determined to save even one more life. In the midst of the chaos, Amon laughed—a deep, unrestrained laugh born not of madness, but of relief.
The world still stood.
For the first time in his life… Amon felt like he had finally taken centre stage.
For the first time in his life.
The Extra became the Hero.
