Chapter 2099 The Side Effects of Chaos
Chapter 2099 The Side Effects of Chaos
Seeing a portal open on the front lawn of a Church Residence building without any sort of warning, or the usual signature of the Church's portal arrays, scrambled an entire team of Holy Guards to the front of the building.
Boots clattered across stone walkways, and civilian petitioners nearby faced hastily locked gates on the shortcut paths that led near the clergy's homes.
That startled everyone, but most assumed that it was just a drill, as there was no announcement to take shelter, and no sign of battle. If they were under attack, there should be both. To them, that meant that there was most likely a VIP in the area, and the Guards were showing off their preparedness measures.
Naturally, that meant they didn't go about their business as planned. They all wanted to see what was going on, and if they could get a glimpse of whoever had caused the lockdown.
Instead, the lucky few who saw anything were greeted by the sight of a single portal on the lawn, and a single bunny who emerged with a folded letter in her hands. She spoke briefly with the guards at the portal, who bowed to someone on the other side, and then escorted the bunny inside while the portal stayed open.
That was odd.
Portals took an immense amount of mana to hold open, so if they weren't in a rush to get the messenger back, they should have closed it. Instead, a single bunny went to hand deliver a letter, and the portal stayed open.
Why would they hold a portal for a bunny?
There were so many more of them that you would normally just let them walk home. It wasn't like they held valuable secrets that someone could pry out of them. Nobody ever told the bunnies anything important.
Lala ran into the building to find the Archbishop, and handed him the letter that Legend Eryman had written, and sealed with his own signet.
She knew what it said, she was right there when he wrote it.
But she waited patiently as the old man read the message, and a smile appeared on his face.
"Nursing teams, gather up the catatonic Oracles. The World Dragon Clerics have a treatment method for them that will let them live a mostly normal life. The portal is being held open on request of the Legend, so you need to hurry," he shouted into the hallway.
There was much running, and Lala waited patiently as the clerics prepared the oracles to move.
As she stood patiently by the desk, the Archbishop turned to her for answers that were not in the message.
"Miss Bunny, can you tell me what measures they are taking that they believe will help the Oracles?"
Lala nodded. "I don't know all of it, but they built a special temple that introduces Chaos Element magic into the area, and that stops their visions from focusing. It gives them random visions, instead of constant doom and trauma.
Then, they had the Darklight Host make them an item that allows them to stop a vision in progress if it happens to be too intense for the Oracle.
So, the number of visions is way down, the visions aren't as bad, and they can stop them.
There's even a special room that simply blocks the visions entirely, if someone is having worse troubles than the Clerics can handle. It's pretty good, and it's got books."
The Archbishop smiled. "That sounds wonderful. I'm certain that they will love it there, and the fact that they don't need to be sedated just to escape the visions."
Lala nodded, her ears bouncing happily. "Yep, yep. There hasn't been one major incident at the temple since they arrived. We go over every day to bring them supplies."
"You're working for the World Dragon Temple?"
Lala shook her head. "No, I work for the Darklight Host, and they made me a real member when I reached Immortality. But our Branch Leader is an Avatar of the World Dragon, and he takes care of his people. So, we bring them good food, and entertainment, and sometimes just sit and talk with the Oracles.
They don't get out much, you see, but we get to see everything that goes on in town."
The Archbishop smiled. Somehow he was not the least bit surprised that the Oracles would like to gossip like fishwives when they were awake and bored, sitting around a Temple all day.
"Do the Oracles go out at all?" He asked.
Lala shrugged. "They're allowed to, but most of them don't because the effect fades if they leave the Temple. The only times they go places is when someone willing to pay for their services, or if they're going out with the Chaos Badger.
Her presence messes with visions way more than some measly spell."
The Archbishop also had zero doubts that was completely true. Just being around a Chaos Element creature was enough to mess with visions. Chaos Dragons were known to be an effective deterrent to all attempts to use Oracles to plan an invasion.
But a Chaos Badger? That was so much worse.
When a Chaos Dragon was around, everyone knew it, and they knew not to use visions to guide them. But Badgers were insidious, and unless you were right in the city, you might never realize that the badger's presence had shown you the least likely outcome, or even an alternate timeline.
And if you were in the city with them, it was even worse. Your attempts to see their timeline would make the badger curious and they might come visit you.
There was no telling what they might do to you if they realized that you were an enemy.
Sitting at the cafe outside the dungeon, Cara sneezed as she sensed someone thinking about her. But they were far away, and not thinking about her in particular, just about badgers. Someone had probably tried to explain the Darklight Host to an outsider.
She could sense Karl holding the portal open, but his thoughts weren't about anything interesting, just bringing some more Oracles to the Clerics and making deals with that Legend who tasted way more bland than she had hoped.
