Also, many thanks to everyone who bought me coffee (*≧∀≦*)
When Gu Jiao learned of the story, she was truly shocked, having never imagined that Gu Changqing could be so stubbornly single-track to such an extent.
She then asked Yuan Baolin, “What if you do have a son, then how are you supposed to coax him into bed?”
Yuan Baolin lifted her chin and said, “Then I’ll tell him that one son would be too lonely, and if anything happens in the future, he wouldn’t even have a brother to back him up, look at you brothers, there are five of you.”
Gu Jiao silently gave her a thumbs-up.
Meanwhile, surrounded all day by a roomful of people fussing over her with concern, Empress Dowager Zhuang hummed and muttered, “You all come every single day like this, don’t you have proper business to attend to?”
Old Chief came as well.
It was just that he always stayed quietly off to the side without making a sound, and since Empress Dowager Zhuang’s eyes could no longer see, she naturally did not know that he had been there.
In the twelfth month, Empress Dowager Zhuang’s memory began to deteriorate, and she often called people by the wrong names.
She would call Jing Kong while looking at little Xiao Xuan, call Gu Yan while looking at Gu Xiaobao, and even ask Gu Jiao where Xiaoshun had gone, and whether Liulang had gone to the prefectural city again to sit for the examinations.
Listening to the snow falling outside the window, she said, “It’s getting cold now, did Liulang bring enough clothes with him? The examination sheds in You Province are cold, not like the capital.”
“He brought enough.” Gu Jiao replied. “Grandaunt, don’t worry. Xiaoshun has gone to the academy to attend classes.”
Grandaunt tugged at the banknotes in her hand, then felt around until she found Gu Jiao’s hand. “Give these to him for me; he fell out with the Gu Family and moved to live at the academy, and with that appetite of his, he won’t be easily filled.”
Gu Jiao accepted the banknotes and said, “All right, I’ll take them to town later and give them to him. Do you want some candied fruits? You can eat as many as you like today…”
Empress Dowager Zhuang closed her eyes and fell asleep.
Gu Jiao quietly lay down beside her, gently pulled her arm open, and softly buried her head in her embrace.
……
On New Year’s Eve, Xuanyuan Xi welcomed his sixteenth birthday, while Xiao Heng also marked his own milestone, stepping into his thirtieth year.
Empress Dowager Zhuang was in good spirits that day. Upon getting up, she polished off six candied fruits in one go, which delighted Eunuch Qin to no end.
The birthday banquet had originally been planned for Renshou Palace, but Empress Dowager Zhuang wanted to play leaf cards, so the whole family returned to Bishui Alley instead.
Empress Dowager Zhuang, Aunt Liu, Granny Zhou, and Aunt Lu made up one table.
Ever since Grandaunt’s eyesight began to fail, Gu Jiao had had the leaf cards remade into mahjong tiles that could be identified by touch.
Old Chief stood behind Grandaunt, dutifully serving tea and handing over his private savings on top of that.
Empress Dowager Zhuang raised her brows and snorted. “I’m in a good mood today, so I’ll let you all lose a little less!”
The neighbors had actually intended to go easy on her, but soon discovered there was no need at all; even in her current state, the elderly lady still utterly crushed all of Bishui Alley.
The neighbors lost miserably.
Yao shi was in the kitchen making pastries, while Princess Xinyang went to learn the craft from her.
Gu Xiaobao and Xiao Yi, the two older children, led the younger ones into the alley to set off firecrackers.
Xuanyuan Xi did not go to join the excitement; instead, he carried over a chair and sat behind Empress Dowager Zhuang, gently resting his delicate chin on her shoulder.
Empress Dowager Zhuang said with a look of disdain, “What are you doing, being all clingy like this?”
“Exactly, so clingy. Kids should go to the side.” Gu Yan said as he came over, squeezed Xuanyuan Xi away, and draped himself over Grandaunt’s shoulder instead.
Empress Dowager Zhuang bristled. “You’re twenty-seven already! What do you think you’re doing! You won’t even find yourself a wife; Xiaoshun’s son will be able to run errands soon!”
Xiaoshun’s unborn baby: “…???”
Gu Yan stuck close to her and said, “Then talk to my mother for me and let me marry Yu Ya’er.”
Empress Dowager Zhuang rolled her eyes inwardly, thinking that he was just spouting nonsense.
These things depended on fate, how could everyone get exactly what they wanted? Back then, she had only prayed for him to survive; he had done so, and she had nothing left to be dissatisfied with.
She pushed the tiles in front of her in one motion. “Self-draw! Win!”
……
In the afternoon, Empress Dowager Zhuang took a nap in her small room.
Xuanyuan Xi also climbed up to lie beside Grandaunt and said, “When I was little, didn’t you really like sleeping with me? You always dragged me into your room.”
Empress Dowager Zhuang said coldly, “That was because I wanted little great-grandchildren!”
Xuanyuan Xi said, “I don’t care, you just like me.”
Empress Dowager Zhuang: …such a shameless fellow.
Xiao Ji, return to me my shy little monk!
Xuanyuan Xi had only meant to tease Grandaunt, but he ended up truly falling asleep himself; when he woke up, the sky was already dark, and he called out to Grandaunt beside him.
Grandaunt did not respond, and his face turned deathly pale in fright. “Grandaunt!”
Empress Dowager Zhuang spoke calmly, “What are you shouting for? Do you think I’ve gone?”
Xuanyuan Xi hurriedly said, “That’s not what I meant!”
Empress Dowager Zhuang said lazily, “Relax, today is New Year’s Eve. I won’t be leaving on New Year’s Eve.”
I won’t turn your and Ah Heng’s birthdays into my death anniversary; how heartbroken would you be then?
On the first day of the first lunar month, the whole extended family from Bishui Alley entered the palace to pay New Year’s respects to her.
She held Gu Jiao’s hand and told her to take good care of Eunuch Qin.
……
Empress Dowager Zhuang passed away on the third day of the first lunar month.
Over those past few days, her spirits had been very good and her memory was no longer confused, so everyone thought she was recovering, and no one expected that after falling asleep once, she would never wake again.
She left in her sleep, her passing peaceful and serene.
She left behind no final words at all; only Eunuch Qin said that the night before, she had taken out the poetry collection she owned before her marriage and flipped through it for a while.
Empress Dowager Zhuang had held power over the court for several decades, and the world remembered only her sharp and domineering methods, forgetting that she had once also been a gentle young lady whose grace came from a heart filled with poetry and learning.
She devoted her entire life to the State of Zhao, and she had countless opportunities to leave the imperial family completely and live a carefree life beyond its walls.
But she never did.
It was for the realm and its people, and also so that the children would not be shamed because of her.
The imperial palace was a cage that imprisoned her for an entire lifetime.
With the passing of the Empress Dowager, ancestral custom dictated that she should be buried in the imperial mausoleum, sharing a coffin with the late Emperor.
Xiao Heng submitted a memorandum to the throne, requesting that a separate tomb be built for Empress Dowager Zhuang.
Not in the name of Empress Dowager Zhuang, but in the name of Zhuang Jinse.
If she had been imprisoned while alive, then in death she must at least be returned her freedom.
On the day the tomb was completed, Gu Jiao, Xiao Heng, Jing Kong, Gu Yan, Gu Xiaoshun, Gu Xiaobao, Gu Changqing, and Zhuang Yuheng came to escort Grandaunt’s spirit.
Grandaunt left no descendants behind in this world.
But all of them were Grandaunt’s children.
[T/N: This epilogue really made me feel so many emotions. T.T We literally see all of them grow up. Now we only have the last extra chapters which are about Gu Jiao and her Godfather. :’)]

Summary:
Xuan Zhi transmigrated into a world where the cultivation of “Supernatural Talismans” was a central practice. In this world, Talisman Masters could use talismans to summon gods, exorcise ghosts, command demons, and control the five elements, making this profession universally acknowledged as the No.1 most promising career in the cultivation world.
When she arrived, she was dressed in red bridal clothes, sitting in a bridal carriage, holding her ancestral “Celestial Talisman,” and preparing to form a marriage alliance with the Yun Clan of Eastern Zhou.
According to the original plot, after marrying into the Yun family, she would be restrained and effectively placed under house arrest in the name of the “three obediences and four virtues,” her husband would change from the Second Young Master Yun on the marriage contract to the abusive Third Young Master Yun, and she would eventually be tormented to death.
Meanwhile, the Yun family would seize her “Celestial Talisman,” summon wind and rain with it, and leap to become the number one great clan in Eastern Zhou.
Xuan Zhi: “Wouldn’t it be better for me to summon gods myself? Why should I give good things to others?”
***
Xuan Zhi: “Great Sage, I’ve been your fan since I was little!”
The “Celestial Talisman” rumbled, releasing a swirling cloud that carried her one hundred and eight thousand li before she plummeted headfirst straight into the main villain's bath.
Xuan Zhi: “I beseech True Lord Erlang to save my life!!”
The next moment, a dog paw suddenly struck her face, barking fiercely as it tore apart every malevolent spirit and sinister creature that surrounded her.
Xuan Zhi: “I may not be able to summon the great gods themselves, but I can summon their little pets and treasures.” (Forced smile.jpg)
Other characters in the book: “Just what kind of gods is she summoning?!!”
Xuan Zhi: “Sorry, my mythology runs on different lore.”
***
One day, Xuan Zhi finally summoned a god everyone recognized.
The Northern Abyss Ghost Emperor emerged amid countless evil spirit followers, clad in a black flame-edged robe with dancing sashes, his dark red eyes radiating a commanding, kingly aura, so imposing it seemed he was a different person from the one chased and bitten by a dog naked that day.
He held a divorce letter in his hand and sneered. “Part ways amicably, and live our own lives in peace?”
His sinister gaze locked onto Xuan Zhi. She snatched the letter, tore it to pieces, then shyly threw herself into his arms and squeezed out tears. “Boohoo, you devil, why did you come so late? Look, they all bullied me!”
Shentu Tao: “……”
Everyone she pointed at backed away in panic. “Good heavens, who is bullying who?!”

Summary:
In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.
When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.
The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.
From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.
***
Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.
After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"
Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"
Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”
Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
