Mu Family.
Old Master Mu sat upright in the main seat, and all those who had gone out on errands had returned.
Standing before him now was his second son, Mu Hong, reporting in.
“Father.” Mu Hong stood before Old Master Mu and truthfully recounted the events that had occurred in the forest. “…The families are in fierce competition, but we still don’t know who sent the Little County Princess back.”
"Humph." Old Master Mu let out a cold grunt. "Each one appears indifferent to the world, but secretly they're competing more fiercely than anyone else."
Mu Hong continued, "I've heard there were quite a few casualties. The exact details depend on how the major noble families spin it."
Old Master Mu furrowed his graying brows. "I didn't expect so many complications to arise from this."
Mu Hong spoke with some shame, "It wasn't supposed to be this troublesome. If that little brat hadn't taken the Little County Princess and run away, we wouldn't have had to chase them down, and we wouldn't have drawn in the other major noble families in the process."
If they had just stayed quietly in that house, who would have discovered them?
But now that things had come to this, saying these regretful words wouldn’t change anything.
"All because of that little brat." Mu Hong couldn't help but mutter.
Who could have imagined that a five-year-old little brat would disrupt the entire Mu Family's plan?
Old Master Mu exhaled a deep breath, "Has everything been handled properly?"
Mu Hong answered, "Father, don't worry. All evidence has been destroyed."
Old Master Mu asked again, “What about the people who captured the Little County Princess? She’s seen their faces.”
Mu Hong replied, "They're dead. We don't know which family's expert killed them. It's safe to say there will be no witnesses, and no one will trace it back to the Mu Family."
Old Master Mu seemed deep in thought, "That fox from the Dong Family seems to know quite a bit."
Mu Hong dismissed it lightly. “Even if he knows, there’s no need to worry. Unless he can produce evidence, but the Dong Family itself isn’t clean. He doesn’t have the guts to take on the Mu Family.”
Though there were undercurrents of strife between the major noble families, certain dealings would never be brought into the open. If the Han Family hadn’t acted first against Imperial Consort Wan, the Mu Family would never have been pushed to take such risks to suppress the Han Family.
Old Master Mu closed his eyes for a moment and sighed, “This matter ends here. Don’t bring it up again in the future. Tell your subordinates to keep their mouths shut.”
Mu Hong cupped his hands and bowed, "Yes, Father. I understand."
"You! What are you doing here!"
Suddenly, a sharp shout from Mu Tao came from outside the door.
Old Master Mu furrowed his brows in alert.
Mu Hong turned on his heel and quickly walked to the door, pulling it open just as Mu Chuan, who had been trembling, was about to step in.
Mu Chuan looked at Mu Hong with a face full of fear.
Mu Hong stared back at him, equally surprised.
The shock on their faces was not the same. Mu Chuan's was mixed with a sense of unfamiliarity and fear, along with a hint of complexity.
Mu Hong quickly regained his composure, glanced at Mu Tao, who was striding forward, and greeted him, “Eldest Brother.”
Mu Tao grabbed Mu Chuan by the wrist and started pulling him out, "You little rascal, who gave you permission to enter your grandfather's courtyard? Didn't you go to school? Not even a word of greeting when you came back…"
Mu Chuan’s feet were planted firmly on the ground.
"Is it true?" He asked.
Mu Tao paused for a moment, his gaze shifting past Mu Chuan to look at Mu Hong inside the room.
Mu Hong took a deep breath and slowly asked, "Little Chuan, how much did you hear?"
Mu Chuan’s eyes reddened. "…I heard everything."
Mu Hong looked at him seriously, "Listen to second uncle. Forget what you've heard."
Mu Chuan shook off his father's hand, wiped his eyes, and with red-rimmed eyes, quickly walked out the door.
Mu Tao frowned, "Where are you going?"
Mu Chuan choked on his words. "I'm going to tell fourth brother!"
Mu Tao’s face darkened, "You little rascal! Get back here!"
Mu Hong looked at Mu Tao, "Eldest brother."
Mu Tao nodded knowingly. "I understand. I’ll make sure Little Chuan stays at home for the next couple of days.”
Mu Tao brought Mu Chuan back, locked him in his own courtyard, and stationed both guards and Mu Family’s death warriors to watch over him.
Just as the Mu Family thought everything was secure, at the approach of the hour of youshi (5-7 pm), someone from the Imperial Advisor's Hall came knocking at their door.
The leader was Ye Qing, the chief disciple of the Imperial Advisor.
Ye Qing wore a dark blue robe from the Imperial Advisor's Hall, with pale green bamboo leaf embroidery along the collar and cuffs, indicating his status as an inner sect disciple.
Holding a long sword, Ye Qing stood with a stern expression at the entrance of the Mu Family’s gate. "By the order of Lord Imperial Advisor, please have the head of the Mu Family come to the Imperial Advisor's Hall."
Mu Tao and Mu Hong went out to greet him.
Mu Tao was both startled and uneasy at the sight of such a formal presence but still responded politely, "My father is unwell. May I ask what instructions Lord Imperial Advisor has? I can accompany you instead."
Ye Qing swung his sword across in front of him, "You are not qualified."
Mu Tao furrowed his brows.
Ye Qing repeated, "I’ll say it once more: By the order of Lord Imperial Advisor, please have the head of the Mu Family come to the Imperial Advisor’s Hall."
One of Mu Family's guards, unable to hold back his disdain, spoke up, "Are you inviting someone or arresting them? Do you even know basic manners? Our Lordship isn't someone you can just take—ah!"
He collapsed after being knocked unconscious by Ye Qing's internal force.
Ye Qing didn’t even draw his sword.
At that moment, Ye Qing was no longer the polite, gentle senior brother of the Imperial Advisor's Hall; he was like a sword with its tip unsheathed, sharp and unyielding.
Mu Tao suppressed his anger and asked, "Since when has the Imperial Advisor's Hall started interfering in the affairs of our noble families?"
Ye Qing replied, "No comment."
Mu Tao gave Ye Qing a long, deep look, then turned to Mu Hong. "Go notify Father."
"No need." Old Master Mu's calm voice sounded as he walked out from the Mu Residence.
Mu Tao and Mu Hong quickly turned around and bowed, "Father!"
Old Master Mu stood on the high platform, looking down at Ye Qing with an air of superiority. "Since Lord Imperial Advisor has requested it, I will go with you to the Imperial Advisor’s Hall. A clear conscience has nothing to fear from shadows; I don’t believe the Imperial Advisor's Hall can falsely accuse my good name!"
Ye Qing replied indifferently, "I never said whether it was a good or bad thing. Why make such assumptions, Mu Family’s head? Perhaps you’re feeling anxious?"
Old Master Mu scoffed coldly, "Don’t argue with me, lad. When I served the imperial court, you weren’t even born yet!"
Ye Qing sneered, "Is that so? Then, please."
Mu Tao and Mu Hong spoke in unison, "Father!"
Old Master Mu gave them a reassuring glance.
Everything that needed to be dealt with had been dealt with. Even if the Imperial Advisor's Hall came, they wouldn’t find any evidence!
......
Qilin Hall.
Little Jing Kong was comfortably soaking in a small tub next door, taking a leisurely bath. To soothe his injured spirit, he didn’t lift a finger to wash himself, spending the entire time lounging in the tub.
"Ah Heng~"
He lifted his tiny arm and showed off his little armpit.
"This part too~"
"Ah Heng~"
"Here too!"
He kicked his little feet up, and his toes wiggled proudly.
The feeling of bossing around his bad brother-in-law was just too great. It felt like he had reached the peak of his childhood!
Xiao Heng gave him a half-smile, half-grimace.
Alright, go ahead and show off.
Once JiaoJiao leaves, let’s see how I deal with you.

Description:
In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.
When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.
The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.
From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.
***
Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.
After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"
Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"
Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”
Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
