The sound of explosions repeatedly rang in Gu Jiao’s ears, accompanied by the frightened whinnies of horses, the roars of cavalry, the flash of blades, and the clash of weapons, creating an atmosphere as if one were truly on the battlefield.

Liao Chen’s voice intertwined endlessly with the chaotic battlefield noises in her mind.

Her chest swelled, as if an intense emotion was surging up, threatening to burst forth.

Clenching her fingers tightly, Gu Jiao declared, “I’m still going.”

A complicated expression flickered in the Imperial Advisor's eyes. “The preliminary selection is tomorrow. I’ll have Ye Qing pick the best horse from the Imperial Advisor’s Hall for you.”

"No need."

While the horses of the Imperial Advisor's Hall were excellent, they weren’t the kind that could fight alongside her.

……

Yangliu Alley.

Lady Nan was drying her collection of poisons. Drowsiness crept over her, and as she worked, her head nodded like a pecking chick. Suddenly, she leaned forward unexpectedly, plunging her head directly into the sieve.

Lady Nan: "..."

Damn it, poisoned again!

With blood trickling from all seven orifices, Lady Nan lifted her head and glanced toward the doorway.

"No way, does this poison even cause hallucinations now?"

"Lady Nan." Gu Jiao stepped over.

Lady Nan raised her hand and pinched Gu Jiao’s face. It was warm—alive.

Not a hallucination.

JiaoJiao had really come back.

Forgetting her poisoned state in an instant, Lady Nan beamed with joy. "Why are you back so soon? Didn’t you say Ah Heng’s mother’s injuries hadn’t healed yet, and you had to stay in the Imperial Advisor’s Hall for a few more days?"

Gu Chengfeng had already come home and recounted everything that had happened at the Imperial Advisor’s Hall.

The shocks had already been digested.

What they were more concerned about now was the future of these two children.

Gu Jiao said, “I came back because I had something to take care of. Are Ah Yan and the others not home?”

Lady Nan replied, "Elder Meng went to exercise the horses, and Ah Yan and Xiaoshun went logging with their master. I’m the only one home right now. They just left, so they won’t be back for a while. Are you hungry? Should I cook something for you?"

"Lady Nan, you..."

Gu Jiao pointed at the streaks of poison-induced blood all over her face.

With blood dripping from all seven orifices, Lady Nan grinned and said, “Do you want noodles or dumplings? My cooking has improved a lot lately. How about I make you a flatbrea—?”

Before the words had even fully left her mouth, Madam Nan collapsed to the ground with a loud thud!

Gu Jiao pressed her hand to her forehead. “You’re poisoned, Lady Nan.”

Shaking her head helplessly, Gu Jiao carried lady Nan back into the house and gave her the antidote from the table.

She took a bottle out of her pocket and placed it on the bedside cabinet. Inside was Gu Changqing’s blood.

She left a note.

Opening the drawer, she counted the nutrient supplements she had set aside for the Black Wind King.

Only less than two doses remained.

Was the Black Wind King still refusing to eat and relying solely on these supplements to sustain his vital signs?

Gu Jiao made her way to the backyard.

The red-tasseled spear stood upright under the scorching sun.

Beside it, the Black Wind King had grown visibly thinner. Lying on the ground, it had completely lost its fighting spirit, resembling an old horse waiting for death.

Even when it saw Gu Jiao approaching, it showed no reaction.

It had lost all enthusiasm and interest in the world.

Gu Jiao knelt on one knee before it, like a knight, and gently placed her hand on its head.

"I need you."

"I need you to stand up."

"I need you to return to the battlefield."

"I need you to fight by my side."

"Not as master and mount, but as comrades and companions."

The Black Wind King remained unresponsive.

It was determined to follow its master in death, completely shutting out the sounds of the outside world.

A deep sorrow welled up in Gu Jiao's heart.

How strange—it seemed she was beginning to feel emotions like a normal person.

She gently stroked the Black Wind King’s head, no longer trying to force it.

Everyone had the right to make their own choices.

Even a horse.

Gu Jiao thought to herself that it might be time to let the Black Wind King go.

With a soothing touch on its head, she began to softly sing a battle hymn:

“How can you say you lack clothes? I’ll share my outer robe with you.”

"The king is raising his forces; I will prepare my dagger-ax and spear, and together we shall face the same foe..”

“How can you say you lack clothes? I’ll share my undershirt with you.”

"The king is raising his forces; I will prepare my lance and spear, and together we will take the battlefield.”

On the roof of the Xuanyuan Family’s mansion, Liao Chen’s chest suddenly tightened, as if stirred by an unexplainable emotion.

With his hands clasped behind his back, he stood alone, gazing into the boundless, vast heavens. Softly, he began to hum, almost murmuring to himself:

“How can you say you lack clothes? I’ll share my trousers with you.”

"The king is raising his forces; I will prepare my buffcoat and sharp weapons.”

“And together, we shall march as one."

In the military camp.

The soldiers sat on the ground, gnawing on cold, hard steamed buns.

Someone, it was unclear who, started singing:

“How can you say you lack clothes? I’ll share my outer robe with you.”

The hoarse voice, sounding like it came from a broken bellows, was far from melodious.

Yet, before long, others joined in, singing along with him

Inside the command tent, General Han frowned deeply, “What’s going on?”

The deputy general knit his brows and replied, “It’s the Xuanyuan Family’s battle hymn.”

Before every campaign, the Xuanyuan Family always sang this hymn, both to rally the troops and to bid farewell to comrades.

However, ever since the four major noble families took control of the Xuanyuan Family’s forces, the soldiers had been forbidden from singing this battle hymn.

“How can you say you lack clothes? I’ll share my outer robe with you.”

"The king is raising his forces; I will prepare my dagger-ax and spear.”

“And together we shall face the same foe!”

The entire military camp resounded with the Xuanyuan Family’s battle hymn. The voices were choked with emotion, hoarse and trembling, yet carried an overwhelming sense of sorrow and defiance that soared to the heavens and swept across the boundless seas.

Gu Jiao bid farewell to the Black Wind King, then reached for the red-tasseled spear standing nearby.

With or without the Black Wind King, she had to return to the battlefield that belonged to her.

As she reached the doorway, a faint rustling sound suddenly came from behind her.

Gu Jiao paused, turning around to see the Black Wind King, who had seemingly lost all will, slowly standing up.

In its eyes, the fire of determination had reignited.

It was the only mare to bear the title of Black Wind King in Great Yan, a horse that had lived a legendary life, its battle achievements leaving all others in its dust.

At sixteen, it was old and ready to retreat from the stage of history.

Its era had ended.

But no one knew that its true legend was only beginning at this moment!

Description:

In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.

When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.

The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.

From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.

***

Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.

After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"

Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"

Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”

Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
