Han Family.
Old Master Han went to the clan to discuss with the elders about selecting candidates for the competition.
Han Ye was left in the house to recover from his injuries.
He sat on a chair, his face looking extremely grim.
Qi Xuan pushed the door open and said to the servants, “You may leave.”
The servants left as though a burden had been lifted off their shoulders.
Qi Xuan sat down beside him, glanced at him, and said, “I hear it starts tomorrow.”
What would start, both of them knew clearly.
Han Ye’s hands, resting on the armrests, clenched into tight fists. His sleepless eyes were bloodshot, and dark circles of exhaustion marred his face.
Qi Xuan sighed sympathetically, “I understand how you feel.”
Han Ye’s fury surged, his eyes burning like torches. “No, Master, you don’t understand. You don’t know what it feels like to be called useless! You don’t know the agony of falling from the clouds into the dust! And you certainly don’t know the humiliation of having the Black Wind Cavalry taken from me!”
Qi Xuan opened his mouth but did not argue.
Han Ye said coldly, “Who leaked the information?”
Qi Xuan replied, “The Han Family kept news of your injury tightly under wraps. It couldn’t have come from them. It’s likely from Xiao Liulang or the Eldest Imperial Grandson’s side.”
Han Ye frowned deeply. “Just thinking about it infuriates me. The Eldest Imperial Grandson turned out to be real after all!”
Wang Xu had personally verified it, so there was no doubt about its authenticity.
The question was, how had he gotten involved with Xiao Liulang?
On this matter, Qi Xuan had no answers either.
What was certain, however, was that the Eldest Imperial Grandson had caused them significant trouble and might continue to do so in the future.
Han Ye gritted his teeth, “If the Black Wind Cavalry are lost under my watch, I will truly be a disgrace to the Han Family!”
Qi Xuan said, “That won’t happen.”
Han Ye frowned at Qi Xuan. “How can Master be so sure?”
Qi Xuan smiled faintly and said, “The Black Wind Cavalry won’t be taken by any other family.”
Han Ye let out a cold snort, “Does Master really have such confidence in the Han Family’s younger generation?”
Qi Xuan replied, “Your fifth uncle has returned.”
Han Ye was startled, “Fifth uncle…”
Qi Xuan nodded, “He brought back a new Black Wind King—one that is stronger, younger, faster, and more agile than your previous mount.”
Han Ye was almost incredulous, “Stronger than my Black Wind King… How is that possible?”
For a moment, he couldn’t accept this fact.
Qi Xuan, being much older than Han Ye, naturally understood what he was thinking.
On one hand, he genuinely wanted the Han Family to win, but on the other hand, he didn’t want to see a younger generation member of the Han Family outshine him.
In short, his feelings were conflicted.
Qi Xuan didn’t call him out on his thoughts. Instead, he spoke objectively, saying, “You should know that the Han Family has been experimenting with a new method to train the Black Wind Cavalry horses for quite some time.”
Han Ye asked suspiciously, “Did that method succeed?”
Qi Xuan nodded and said, “Yes, it succeeded. So rest assured, no one will take the commander’s position. The Black Wind Cavalry belong to the Han Family!”
……
“Lady Nan, Master Lu, Old Master Meng, I’m off!”
At the residence, Gu Jiao bid farewell to the three of them.
Master Lu glanced at the darkening sky and said, “It’s so late. Why don’t you leave tomorrow morning?”
Gu Jiao replied, “Tomorrow is the day of the preliminary selection. If I leave today, the Black Wind King will have more time to rest and recover its strength before the competition.”
Lady Nan shot a glare at her husband. “If she rushes over from here early in the morning and immediately starts competing, who can handle that?”
Not to mention, the Black Wind King hadn’t been eating well these past few days and had lost quite a bit of weight, far from its peak condition.
Master Lu chuckled, “True, then JiaoJiao, be careful on the road.”
“I’ll accompany you.” Gu Yan said.
“Big sis, I’ll go with you too!” Gu Xiaoshun added.
“Alright.” Gu Jiao curved her lips into a faint smile.
Old Master Meng called out to her in his usual calm tone, “Wait a moment.”
“What’s the matter?” Gu Jiao looked over at him while adjusting the Black Wind King’s saddle.
Old Master Meng removed the Chess Saint’s token from his waist and handed it to her. “Take it.”
After learning he was the true Chess Saint, Gu Jiao had returned the token to him.
Gu Jiao said, “I don’t need the token anymore to enter the inner city.”
The Imperial Advisor's Hall had given her an inner city tally.
Old Master Meng scowled and said, “Take it. If you run into something you can’t handle, just tell them that I, Old Meng, owe them a favor.”
Gu Jiao didn’t refuse and reached out to take it. “Alright, thanks, old man.”
Old Master Meng coughed lightly, “Call me Master!”
——Gu Jiao left.
Old Master Meng: Rebellious disciple!
Gu Yan and Gu Xiaoshun escorted Gu Jiao all the way to the alley entrance. Gu Yan hooked his finger at Gu Jiao, gesturing for her attention. “You have to win.”
Most people might have said that winning or losing wasn’t important, that she should just do her best.
But Gu Yan could feel that there was something deeper in her soul, something she valued even more than life itself.
“Alright.” Gu Jiao nodded.
Gu Xiaoshun discreetly slipped a mechanical box into his sister’s hand. “This one’s been upgraded. It won’t cause indiscriminate attacks anymore, so you can use it without worry.”
The previous one had even targeted Gu Jiao herself. When she tested it at the Imperial Advisor’s Hall, she had nearly turned herself and Ye Qing into pincushions.
Gu Jiao accepted the mechanical box. “You two head back. I’ll return once I’m done with this task.”
Gu Xiaoshun pulled Gu Yan along as they left. Even after walking a distance, he turned back to wave at Gu Jiao. “Big sis, be careful on the road.”
Gu Jiao waved back. “Mm, I will!”
She waited until they entered the courtyard before mounting the Black Wind King.
This was her first time riding the Black Wind King, and it certainly felt different from riding any other horse.
She raised an eyebrow. “Am I riding a horse? No, this feels like a Lamborghini.”
It was just so flashy.
Considering the Black Wind King’s condition and stamina, Gu Jiao didn’t ride too fast. But halfway through, she began to feel a vague sense that someone was tailing her.
She glanced at the shadow on the ground and lightly rubbed her chin.
She stopped the Black Wind King.
The shadow stopped too.
She moved forward.
The shadow followed.
Tapping her fingers lightly on the saddle, she suddenly dismounted and walked toward the shadow.
The horse king panicked, shoving its head into the roadside grass.
You can’t see anything, can’t see anything, can’t see anything…
Gu Jiao: “???”
……
Little Jing Kong refused to sleep. He insisted on waiting for JiaoJiao to return.
Not content to wait at the Qilin Hall, he went straight to the gates of the Imperial Advisor’s Hall.
Xiao Heng had no choice but to follow.
The two of them, one big and one small, waited by the gates like statues longing for their loved one. At last, they saw Gu Jiao arrive——
With two horses in tow.
The Black Wind King and the horse king.
The moment Little Jing Kong saw the horse king, his eyes lit up. “Whoa! It’s Little Eleven! JiaoJiao, you brought Little Eleven!”
The horse king’s body trembled, its legs nearly giving way in fright!
Aiya, why is this little rascal here?!
Is it too late to run now?

Description:
In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.
When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.
The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.
From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.
***
Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.
After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"
Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"
Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”
Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
