Gu Jiao and Liao Chen led thirty thousand troops. After a full day’s march, they reached the small forest just outside of Pucheng.

Gu Jiao said, “We’ll rest here for the night. At daybreak, we’ll launch the assault on the city.”

"Alright." Liao Chen found the plan agreeable and nodded in approval.

Gu Jiao, for her part, wasn’t at all concerned about their position being discovered and drawing a siege from the Jin army. Based on her understanding of Gongsun Yu, there was an extremely high chance he wouldn’t even bother with their thirty thousand troops, likely seeing them as unworthy of his attention. What Gongsun Yu truly wanted was to reserve his forces to confront the main army of Great Yan.

It was highly probable that Gongsun Yu would dispatch the Han Family to deal with them instead.

And the Han Family, in order to preserve their full strength for a decisive encounter, would most certainly not choose to launch a risky night raid beyond the safety of the city walls.

Gu Jiao sat down on the ground with her back against a large tree, holding her red-tasseled spear close to her chest. She closed her eyes and said, “They’ll conserve their energy and wait for us, staying inside the city to take the advantage of fighting from a rested position.”

The tree was wide enough to accommodate two people leaning against it side by side without feeling cramped.

Liao Chen sat down next to her. He glanced at her out of the corner of his eye and said, “There’s something that’s been bothering me.”

“What is it?” Gu Jiao asked.

In a quiet voice, Liao Chen said, “You… do you have some kind of connection to the Xuanyuan Family?”

Gu Jiao replied, “Why do you ask that?”

Liao Chen looked up at the branches above and said, “My uncle’s red-tasseled spear is now in your hands. I know it ended up with you by coincidence, but somehow, I can’t help feeling… like it was destined for you all along.”

Gu Jiao fell silent.

Liao Chen continued, “The battle garb you wear belonged to the very first Lord of the Shadows. As for the armor, it was reforged from my uncle’s armor, but that armor was originally a gift from the first Lord of the Shadows as well.”

So my battle garb and black armor actually have such a history...

In truth, there was one more thing Liao Chen hadn’t said aloud.

The battle garb and the black armor were never meant to be separated. Now that they were finally reunited, it felt as if… they had returned to the one who was always meant to wear them.

A light breeze stirred the air, rustling the leaves around them.

Liao Chen turned his head again to glance at Gu Jiao, only to find that she had already drifted off to sleep, holding the red-tasseled spear gently in her arms.

The Black Wind King quietly approached, climbed up the supply wagon, and gently bit down on a thick, warm cloak before carefully placing it over Gu Jiao’s body.

Liao Chen closed his eyes in envy.

Moments later, he felt something being draped over his own shoulders as well.

Opening his eyes to look, he saw that the Black Wind King had bitten and dropped something for him too.

——It was a tattered burlap sack.

Liao Chen: “…”

……

At the hour of chenshi(7 - 9 am), just after sunrise the next morning, the skies remained shrouded in gloom, filled with a heavy, oppressive atmosphere that hinted at an impending bloodbath.

The Black Wind Cavalry and the Shadow Division had arrived at the gates of Pucheng.

Unlike Quyang City, which was built to be easily defended and difficult to attack, Pucheng lacked such advantages for two primary reasons. First, the city was old and long neglected, and the original city lord had embezzled the funds allocated for repairs, leaving the fortress in a state of disrepair. Second, not long ago, the Jin army had already attacked and breached the city, damaging the towers in the process.

After occupying the city, the Jin army had conscripted a large number of able-bodied men to begin restoring the towers. But unfortunately, the southern wall had yet to be completed.

Gu Jiao and Liao Chen rode at the front of the thirty-thousand-strong army, gazing up at the city tower, where several figures, some strangely familiar, stood in watch.

“So it really is the Han Family.” Gu Jiao said, her guess confirmed. She explained to Liao Chen, “That silver-haired man is Fifth Master Han. The man beside him is Han Lei, the eldest master of the Han Family. He’s Han Ye’s father.”

Liao Chen looked toward the wall.

The men atop the tower also turned their eyes toward Liao Chen.

Han Lei narrowed his gaze thoughtfully and said, “I know that young man. He’s the one who took Xiao Liulang’s place and was adopted by Duke An as his foster son. He’s now the commander of the Black Wind Cavalry. But the one beside him… I don’t believe I’ve ever seen him before.”

Han Ci remained silent.

He stared unwaveringly at Liao Chen, and Liao Chen, in turn, stared back at him without the slightest sign of avoidance.

Han Lei glanced over at Han Ci and asked, “Fifth Brother, do you know him?”

Han Ci said, “No. But those eyes… I feel like I’ve seen them somewhere before.”

Raising her red-tasseled spear high, Gu Jiao pointed boldly at the city tower with unrestrained arrogance and shouted, “Han Family dogs! Do you dare come out and face this grandpa in an open battle?!”

Han Lei’s mouth twitched in fury!

The next instant, the city gates burst open, and a young man clad in silver armor, wielding a long sword, galloped forth on horseback.

Gu Jiao focused her gaze to get a clearer look.

Hm?

It was Han Ye.

Gu Jiao raised an eyebrow, slung her red-tasseled spear casually over her shoulder, and looked at him with calm amusement. “So, your leg tendons have healed? Hopefully you’re not limited to just sitting on a horse while fighting, are you?”

Just hearing that made Han Ye’s blood boil. He had endured so much suffering and pain to finally regain the ability to stand on his own two feet!

And it was all because of that wretched Xiao Liulang!

He was going to kill him, avenge himself, and more importantly, avenge his Second Uncle!

Han Lei’s brows furrowed deeply. “Why did Ye’er open the city gates on his own?”

Fifth Master Han remained composed and replied, “We weren’t going to hold the city anyway. Might as well go out and meet them in open battle.”

The Black Cavalry’s greatest strength lay in offense; only beneath the city walls could they unleash their full potential.

Besides, he had been waiting for this day for a long, long time.

He had always wanted to know whether the Black Cavalry he had personally trained could truly defeat the Xuanyuan Family’s Black Wind Cavalry!

Wave after wave of Black Cavalry charged out of the city, immediately clashing with the forces of the Black Wind Cavalry and the Shadow Division in a fierce melee.

The confrontation arrived faster and fiercer than anyone had expected.

In the blink of an eye, dozens of cavalrymen had already fallen, on both sides of the battlefield.

Han Ye had locked onto his target: Gu Jiao.

“Where’s that Gu Changqing? Why didn’t he come with you?”

“You’re not even worthy to face him in combat.”

“Arrogant fool! Take this sword!”

With a roar, Han Ye swung his sword straight toward Gu Jiao’s head!

Gu Jiao raised her red-tasseled spear and blocked the strike.

The clash between spear and sword rang out crisp and clear. Han Ye’s murderous intent surged so strongly, it seemed to fill the entire sky and earth.

Han Ye was stunned.

Clearly, the last time they fought, this boy hadn’t even been close to his match. Why was it that today, after exchanging more than ten blows, the kid still looked relaxed, without a hint of fatigue or strain?

Whoosh!

Gu Jiao thrust her spear backward, skewering a Han Family cavalryman through the chest, then spun the weapon and jabbed it swiftly toward Han Ye’s waist and abdomen!

It was an extremely tricky angle, impossible to block, and equally impossible to deflect.

Han Ye clenched his jaw and activated his qinggong, leaping high into the air to narrowly dodge the blow. Immediately after, he flipped midair and launched into a dive from above Gu Jiao’s head, aiming his sword straight at the Baihui acupoint on the crown of her skull!

“So you’re trying to skewer me into the ground? Keep dreaming!”

Gu Jiao stared up at him without flinching, and then suddenly leaned backward and fell into a dramatic recline.

Clang! Han Ye’s sword struck her armor squarely. But it failed to pierce through!

Han Ye’s pupils contracted in disbelief.

Gu Jiao seized the opening and slashed her spear across his thigh.

Han Ye couldn’t understand why this kid’s armor was so unbelievably tough, and by the time he realized he needed to retreat, it was already too late——

Just as his thigh was about to be cleanly sliced off by Gu Jiao’s strike, Fifth Master Han galloped in on his Black Demon Horse, appearing behind them at incredible speed. With a swift motion, he used his sword to knock Gu Jiao’s spear aside.

Now it was two against one. Gu Jiao was caught between enemies front and back.

Han Ye barked, “You aim for his arms, I’ll kill his horse!”

Before he could finish the sentence, Liao Chen suddenly descended from the sky like a bolt of lightning and struck with a palm, forcing Fifth Master Han off his Black Demon Horse!

Fifth Master Han flipped in midair to regain his balance, then turned around, his expression filled with disbelief as he stared at the man who had unseated him with a single move. “Who are you? Name yourself!”

Liao Chen’s killing intent was sharp as a blade as he declared, “The Seventh Master of the Xuanyuan Family——Xuanyuan Zheng!”

Description:

In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.

When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.

The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.

From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.

***

Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.

After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"

Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"

Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”

Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
