Also, many thanks to everyone who bought me coffee (*≧∀≦*)

The fires of battle raged through Pucheng for an entire day and night.

Even though Gongsun Yu had issued an early order to retreat, all four gates of the city had already been sealed by the troops of the State of Yan. Even if they wanted to withdraw, they couldn’t.

Taoist Qingfeng returned to that familiar street and pushed open the door of the shop.

Inside the main hall, Liao Chen sat on the floor, leaning against a pillar. One long leg stretched out lazily while the other was bent carelessly. One hand rested idly on his raised knee.

In his arms, a four-year-old child was sound asleep.

Upon hearing footsteps, his long eyelashes fluttered slightly. He opened his eyes and turned his head toward Taoist Qingfeng, who was approaching with the moonlight behind him.

Liao Chen’s face was extremely pale, and his lips had lost all color.

The killing aura on Taoist Qingfeng’s body had faded.

He said indifferently, “I won’t take advantage of a wounded man. Once the war ends, I’ll take your life then.”

Liao Chen gave a soft cough, spitting out a mouthful of blood. He casually wiped it away, smiling as he said, “Suit yourself.”

“You’re seriously injured.” Taoist Qingfeng said with a frown, stepping closer and kneeling down on one knee in front of him. “Give me your hand.”

Liao Chen raised an eyebrow and handed his hand over with a half-smile.

Taoist Qingfeng took his pulse, pondered for a moment, then retrieved a small bottle of medicine from his robes. “Take one.”

Liao Chen glanced at the tightly sealed bottle and said weakly, “I don’t have the strength. Could you feed it to me?”

Taoist Qingfeng frowned deeply.

This demon monk was truly insufferable.

But he still pulled out the stopper, tipped a brown pill into his hand, and placed it into Liao Chen’s mouth.

Liao Chen crunched the pill right away, chewing it without hesitation.

Taoist Qingfeng paused as he reached for the water pouch at his waist, then pulled his hand back.

Good. Less hassle for him.

The medicine didn’t take effect immediately. After swallowing it, Liao Chen remained quietly leaning against the pillar. Then, remembering something important, he asked, “Where’s Gongsun Yu?”

Taoist Qingfeng replied, “Someone got to him before I did.”

Liao Chen asked, “That girl?”

Taoist Qingfeng gave him a strange look. “Hmm?”

Liao Chen opened his mouth slightly. “Ah… I let it slip.”

“You’re saying… the commander of the Black Wind Cavalry is a woman?” Taoist Qingfeng fell into deep thought. That possibility had never even crossed his mind. First, because he hadn’t interacted with many women and lacked the experience to suspect such a thing; second, because no one in their right mind would imagine a woman possessing such audacity and prowess.

Liao Chen cleared his throat and awkwardly changed the subject. “How come you didn’t get lost this time?”

He could understand not getting lost when chasing Gongsun Yu; just follow the man and he wouldn’t lose the way unless he was blind.

But coming back was a different matter, as he had to travel alone.

Taoist Qingfeng replied, “I rode a horse.”

An old horse knew the way home.

Liao Chen: “…”

……

Gongsun Yu’s death dealt a massive blow to the Jin army, their morale plummeted, and even though they wanted to retreat, there was no way out.

The twenty thousand troops stationed at Ghost Mountain were either captured or slaughtered by Marquis Xuanping and five thousand elite Yan soldiers.

Chang Jing returned with Zhu Zhangkuang in custody.

Zhu Zhangkuang wore a thoroughly aggrieved expression.

He had discovered Chang Jing’s secret so Chang Jing had originally planned to kill him to silence him, but unexpectedly, Zhu Zhangkuang surrendered!

And Marquis Xuanping had clear rules: surrendered soldiers must not be killed.

In the end, the battle of Pucheng resulted in a crushing defeat for the Jin army. Roughly sixty thousand troops managed to escape the siege with their lives, fleeing back into the territory of the State of Jin through another border city.

At that moment, the State of Jin had yet to realize that their nightmare was far from over.

By the middle of the tenth month, the Gu Family Army from the State of Zhao would cross through the State of Yan and arrive at the Jin border.

By the end of tenth month, the main armies of the State of Chen and the State of Qing would also march westward, bearing down on Jiuyu Pass at the edge of Jin territory.

The State of Liang, having just suffered a disastrous defeat, was licking its wounds and wouldn’t dare act rashly.

But in the north, the Turkic tribes, long harboring resentment toward the State of Jin, would also join the coalition.

What awaited the State of Jin next would be an unprecedented joint invasion by five nations!

Pucheng City Lord’s residence.

Wang Man and several generals were reporting the battle’s results to the Crown Princess seated in the place of honor.

The remnants of the Jin army within the city had been rounded up. The other city once occupied by the Han Family had been reclaimed, and all four Han Family masters had died in battle. The rest of the Han Family had been captured.

“What about the casualties among our troops?” Shangguan Yan asked.

“Far better than expected.” Wang Man answered honestly.

Though he was an arrogant man, he never falsified battle results.

In fact, this campaign had the lowest casualty rate of any war he had participated in. On one hand, it was thanks to the soldiers’ unmatched valor. On the other… he had to admit that the military physicians’ superb skills had saved a great number of lives.

Shangguan Yan smiled and said, “Then General Wang must give proper thanks to Commander Xiao. It was he who provided the medicine, and he who taught the medical officers emergency treatment for external wounds.”

The moment that brat’s name was mentioned again, Wang Man let out a disgruntled snort.

Shangguan Yan had no time to bicker with him. Qing’er had been unconscious for several days and she needed to check whether he had finally woken up.

In truth, Shangguan Qing had already awoken, and he now knew exactly who had carried him on his back through the tunnel that day.

Remembering that shameless line, “Brother Qing’s got your back. There’ll be drinks to share and girls to sleep with,” he almost wanted to scream right then and there——Aaaaargh!

Knock knock knock.

A soft knocking came from outside the door.

“Qing’er, are you awake? I’m coming in.”

Shangguan Qing was kneeling on the bed, pounding his tiny chest with furious fists, screaming silently in his head.

As he heard the voice and the sound of the door creaking open, he instantly grabbed the blanket and pulled it over his entire body!

He dropped forward, kneeling on the bed with his body curled up tightly.

His head was covered.

But, his two little feet were still sticking out.

His toes wiggled defiantly at first… then slowly, inch by inch, shyly slipped back under the covers.

Marquis Xuanping: “…”

PLEASE CHECK OUT OUR NEW PROJECT:

Description:

In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.

When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.

The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.

From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.

***

Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.

After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"

Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"

Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”

Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
