This shocking turn of events left every Jin soldier on the city tower dumbfounded.
They doubted their own eyes.
How could a lone cavalryman of the State of Yan, charging in all by himself, possibly break through their storm of arrows, and relying on his own strength alone, impale their Grand General to the city tower with a single spear?
This couldn’t be real!
The Grand General was famed for his unmatched martial skill. On top of that, he wore armor said to be impervious to blades and arrows!
How could a single Black Wind Cavalryman possibly injure him?
...But soon enough, they were forced to face the cruel truth. It wasn’t just an injury. It was a kill.
Gu Jiao’s success was no fluke.
It was Marquis Xuanping who first pierced through Gongsun Yu’s armor, leaving him with a blade wound. Then Liao Chen fought to the death with Gongsun Yu, exchanging his life to inflict a serious internal injury.
Of course, even under such circumstances, landing a fatal strike in one blow would still have been nearly impossible.
And yet Gu Jiao’s strength sent a chill down the spines of every Jin soldier.
The rope in the hand of the defending general on the wall slipped loose. He finally snapped out of his shock and shouted hoarsely, “Grand General——”
But the Grand General could no longer hear his cry.
A wave of furious rage and bone-deep grief surged within the defending general. Within the State of Jin, the Gongsun Family’s stature was no less than that of the Xuanyuan Family in the State of Yan. The old general had passed, and Gongsun Yu, an extraordinary commander unseen in a hundred years, had become the spiritual pillar of the entire frontier.
And yet just moments ago, right under his very nose, Gongsun Yu was shot dead by a Yan cavalryman!
Unacceptable!
Gu Jiao watched the Jin troops sink into their immense grief with an unsettling calm. Was this already too much for them to accept?
Everything was only just beginning.
The blare of war horns erupted, drums thundered like the heavens crashing down, and the pounding of hooves surged like a wave.
Under the ink-black veil of night, the Black Wind Cavalry and the Shadow Division arrived at the base of the city walls.
Inside Pucheng, chaos had already erupted like boiling porridge. Half the forces remained to guard the southern gate, while the rest had all chased Gu Jiao to the border between the two states.
They hadn’t fallen too far behind, which meant the Black Wind King hadn’t run at full speed. Their young commander had remained at a steady distance throughout, purposefully allowing Gongsun Yu to be brought back here.
That one spear could have killed him on the road; doing it then would have been even safer.
But the young commander didn’t choose the safer path. He risked being shot by the Jin army, waited until the last moment when Gongsun Yu was pulled up onto the city tower, and then struck him clean through with a single shot!
What a devastating way to die.
For Gongsun Yu, and for every Jin soldier stationed at the border, it was a suffocating blow.
But just as the young commander had planned, this was far from over.
The archers of the Black Wind Cavalry raised their bows in unison.
Zhang Shiyong shouted, “Loose!”
Hundreds of arrows tore through the air with fierce, unstoppable force, aimed straight at the body of Gongsun Yu!
This volley of arrows was for their Supreme Commander!
The warriors of the Shadow Division likewise drew their bows to full tension.
General Pang roared, “Loose!”
This volley of arrows was for their Grand General!
Wenren Chong, Li Shen, and Zhao Dengfeng each pulled their longbows with icy expressions, the fletching whispering under their fingers.
This volley was for Xuanyuan Sheng! For Xuanyuan Zi! For every soldier who died by your hand!
“No——”
“Stop——”
“Grand General——”
On the city tower, the Jin commanding officer’s anguished screams echoed like the cries of a man on the brink of collapse.
Back then, had the Xuanyuan army screamed like this too?
Had they also begged Gongsun Yu to stop? Had they pleaded for mercy, begged the State of Jin not to treat Xuanyuan Sheng that way?
Tens of thousands of arrows pierced straight through his heart!
Back then, whatever Xuanyuan Sheng had suffered, Gongsun Yu today would only receive tenfold more.
Whether from overwhelming grief or utter shock, the rain of arrows from the Jin army atop the tower suddenly ceased.
Their anguished cries echoed through the skies above the entire city, while Gu Jiao’s expression remained utterly unchanged from beginning to end.
No pity, no hesitation, not even the faintest hint of triumph after exacting revenge.
Her face held only one thing, calm.
And this calmness, in itself, was the greatest insult to the Jin army.
The defending general’s eyes were bloodshot as he pointed furiously down at Gu Jiao beneath the tower, roaring with every ounce of his voice, “Kill him! Kill him! Avenge the Grand General! Bring out the siege weapons!”
If a rain of arrows couldn’t hurt you, then surely the boulders and heavy bolts of the siege carts would tear through you!
The power of siege engines and giant crossbows was nothing like blades or arrows wielded by hand. No matter how strong one’s armor, it could still be crushed.
But just as the Jin army began to roll out their siege carts and bolt-throwers, the State of Yan’s siege weapons arrived along with the main force.
At the front of the charge was Tang Yueshan.
He dashed fearlessly to Gu Jiao’s side, entering the Jin army’s range of attack. Glancing up at Gongsun Yu’s lifeless body atop the wall, he clicked his tongue twice. “As expected of my big bro.”
He was becoming far too comfortable in his role as her little lackey.
“What are you doing here? Aren’t you supposed to be breaching the walls?” She remembered that Tang Yueshan had gone with Marquis Xuanping to attack the northern gate.
Tang Yueshan replied, “The northern gate has already been breached. The main army from the State of Yan is inside now. Old Xiao’s gone off to Ghost Mountain; I took ten thousand troops to support him there. He only left five thousand behind, and told me to bring the remaining five thousand back. Said it was to chase after someone named Gongsun Yu.”
Gu Jiao, still seated atop her horse, gazed at the Jin soldiers standing in full battle formation atop the wall and said calmly, “Since that’s the case, let’s begin.”
Tang Yueshan gave her a strange look. “You’re thinking of...?”
Gu Jiao gave a soft hum in response and, in the most tranquil tone, uttered the most arrogant of words, “No day better than today. Lay siege to the city!”

Description:
In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.
When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.
The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.
From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.
***
Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.
After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"
Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"
Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”
Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
