Also, many thanks to everyone who bought me coffee (*≧∀≦*)

Marquis Xuanping narrowed his eyes slightly.

Chang Ying said calmly, “I’ve sparred with my younger brother before. His sword techniques now include many moves that are not from our Hidden Night Sect, and his footwork is strikingly similar to yours. I’m guessing that all these years, he’s been by your side, hasn’t he? This trip to Hidden Night Island, was it actually just to gather those wild herbs at the back mountain?”

So Chang Jing had gone behind their backs to dig up wild herbs, did he really think they wouldn’t notice?

Marquis Xuanping suddenly understood. “So that’s how the truth slipped out.”

Chang Ying pointed her treasured blade at him. “The fact that you’re willing to admit it proves you’re clever. If you had tried to argue just now, I would’ve already given the order to have you killed.”

Marquis Xuanping chuckled. “If I weren’t clever, how could I have managed to form a bond with such celestial maidens?”

The word celestial maiden was clearly pleasing to the ear. Chang Ying gave a cold snort. “What are you doing spouting such honest nonsense?”

As long as “celestial maiden” was said sincerely, the rest could all be truth as well.

Chang Ying continued, “Although you’ve ‘abducted’ my younger brother, based on what I know of him, if you weren’t genuine toward him, he wouldn’t have brought you back to the island. You do realize, don’t you, that over the years, there’s only been one type of outsider allowed to set foot on our island?”

“What type?” Marquis Xuanping asked.

“Lovers.”

Marquis Xuanping: “……!!”

Chang Ying sheathed her treasured blade. “For the sake of my younger brother, I won’t report this to my father.”

Marquis Xuanping smiled. “Many thanks. Then, I shall take my leave.”

“Stop right there.” Chang Ying called out to him.

Marquis Xuanping asked politely, “What further instructions does the celestial maiden have for me?”

Calling her celestial maiden with every other breath, how could anyone not feel pleased to the core?

She had originally promised her sisters that each of them would get a turn to beat him up…

But fine, she would spare him after all!

Chang Ying let out a whistle.

A snow-white icefield wolf with a flame-shaped mark on its forehead leapt down from the island.

This icefield wolf had an aura different from the others, it felt like an alpha.

It padded over to Chang Ying’s side, and she knelt on one knee, gently stroking its head. She said to Marquis Xuanping, “This is Spirit King, the strongest alpha wolf on our island. I came across it by sheer luck when it was injured, which is how I ended up bonding with it. Even my father has never borrowed it. Today, I’m lending it to you. Spirit King is extremely sensitive to blizzards. In fact, all icefield wolves can sense approaching storms, but Spirit King is far better than the others at avoiding them.”

As she spoke, something occurred to her, and her expression turned serious.

She warned Marquis Xuanping, “Remember this, if Spirit King refuses to lead the way any further, it means the storm is unavoidable. Under no circumstances should you force your way through.”

Marquis Xuanping nodded. “Understood. Then, once I cross the icefields, how should I return it and the other wolves to you?”

Chang Ying replied, “You don’t need to worry about that. Spirit King will bring them back on its own.”

Marquis Xuanping cupped his fists in farewell. “Farewell, Celestial Maiden Chang.”

Even when calling someone a celestial maiden, he did it with such solemn respect, who would ever suspect he was anything but sincere?

When it came to charming women, Marquis Xuanping had never once failed, except with Princess Xinyang.

Chang Ying placed Spirit King at the head of the first row, carefully fastening the reins and whispering a few words into its ear, soft and heartfelt reminders.

Lead the guest well, and more importantly, stay safe. You must come back to me alive.

After bidding farewell to Chang Ying, Marquis Xuanping climbed into the snow carriage, pulled on his beast-fur gloves, gripped the reins tightly, and with a commanding shout, Spirit King took the lead, galloping off with the pack of icefield wolves at astonishing speed.

Up on the tall slope, Chang Kun and his son stood watching Marquis Xuanping and the wolves as they gradually disappeared into the distance.

Chang Jing was wrapped in thick furs, wearing a hat that covered his ears. The braids his sister had made for him hung neatly over his shoulders.

His gaze was clear and pure, yet full of sorrow.

It was not the kind of expression a boy of seventeen or eighteen should have.

He was still too young, far too young for such sorrow.

Chang Kun placed his hands behind his back, using his massive frame to shield his son from the bitter winter wind. With a sigh, he said, “Your eldest sister lent Spirit King to him. That’s the most our Hidden Night Sect can do for him. It’s not that I’m unwilling to send him more people, it’s that it would be pointless.”

Only after witnessing the wrath of nature could one understand the insignificance of human strength; no martial prowess can make up for it.

Chang Kun couldn’t bear to see that sorrowful look in his son’s eyes. With another sigh, he said, “I promise you, once spring comes, we’ll destroy the Sword Lodge.”

Chang Jing hugged a box of marbles tightly to his chest and walked off in silence.

……

The State of Zhao.

In the residence along Zhuque Street, after Princess Xinyang had wept, she went to prepare traveling clothes for Shangguan Qing.

Inside the room, having composed herself, Princess Xinyang placed a large bundle onto his table. “Mother didn’t know you’re still alive, so these clothes belonged to your younger brother.”

All of these garments were brand new; Xiao Heng had never worn them. Princess Xinyang could have easily lied and said she had just sent someone to the shop to buy them for him.

But she didn’t.

And Shangguan Qing didn’t need her to.

“You’re not planning to leave tonight, are you?” Princess Xinyang asked.

“No. I’ll leave at dawn.”

Outside the door, Xiao Heng heard his reply and frowned slightly.

Weren’t they supposed to stay for three days?

Why was he leaving earlier, tomorrow morning?

Could it be——

Yes. The poison in Shangguan Qing’s body had begun to deteriorate rapidly. The medicine prescribed by the Imperial Advisor’s Hall was gradually losing its effect, and he wouldn’t last another three days.

He could technically take an entire bottle in one go, but the price of doing so would be falling into a deep, irreversible sleep.

He would pass away peacefully in his dreams.

That was the final mercy the medicine could offer him.

However, Shangguan Qing didn’t want that.

He didn’t want to sleep.

He wanted to look at his mother with clear eyes, to live out these final hours truly as himself.

In the last stretch of his life, he didn’t want to sleep through it all.

He would rather endure the torment of a thousand blades than leave this world unaware.

Princess Xinyang’s heart felt like it was being torn apart, but she forced a gentle smile and said, “Then… how about Mother stays with you tonight?”

Shangguan Qing couldn’t bring himself to refuse.

He was about to die, so let him be selfish this once.

He also longed to lie beside his mother, to feel close to her one last time.

Description:

In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.

When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.

The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.

From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.

***

Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.

After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"

Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"

Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”

Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
