Neither mother nor son could bear to fall asleep.

Princess Xinyang sat at the head of the bed, telling Shangguan Qing stories of the State of Zhao.

But in truth, what she longed to hear was him talking about the State of Yan, how he grew up, what he liked, what he didn’t, and everything he had experienced.

But she knew he no longer had the strength.

He lay quietly beside her like a frail infant, holding her hand, barely able to breathe.

“Mother likes growing flowers. There are a lot of peonies in the greenhouse. If you like them, I’ll pick a few for you tomorrow morning.”

How could a boy possibly like peonies?

Her heart was in disarray.

The tears were rampaging in her chest, and she didn’t even know what she was saying anymore.

“What about my father?”

He suddenly spoke, voice weak. “What kind of person was he?”

“He…” Princess Xinyang’s thoughts instantly cleared. She was silent for a long time, unsure how to describe that man.

Finally, she said softly, “He was a good father.”

……

Over the icefields, a vast expanse of white snow stretched endlessly.

Marquis Xuanping raced across the icy wind alongside eleven icefield wolves.

Standing atop the snow carriage, with storm clouds churning behind him, Marquis Xuanping stared into the gloom of the overcast sky.

On their journey thus far, Spirit King had already led him and the other wolves through two blizzards and one avalanche. Even now, it was charging forward tirelessly.

Under its lead, not a single icefield wolf had collapsed from fatigue or fear.

Marquis Xuanping had to steer the snow carriage, keeping its direction and balance; he wasn’t resting either.

The lake on the return path had frozen over.

He had thought they wouldn’t need to take any detours this time, but due to the fierce snowstorms, they still had to adjust their route now and then.

They crossed the land and arrived at a sheet of ice covering a lake.

Marquis Xuanping looked at the icefield wolf leading the charge ahead, a faint crease forming between his brows as he muttered, “Spirit King is running this fast again, is there another blizzard coming?”

A sense of unease rose in his chest, an ominous feeling that told him this approaching blizzard might not be as simple as the ones before.

He tightened his grip on the reins.

Suddenly, a thunderous roar exploded behind him.

Not good!

It was an avalanche!

“Spirit King!”

He shouted loudly.

As if sensing the danger, Spirit King accelerated once more, and the rest of the icefield wolves followed its lead, picking up speed.

Marquis Xuanping glanced back, only to see massive sheets of snow collapsing down the mountainside in waves, rushing toward them like a torrent of icy fury.

Without warning, Spirit King abruptly changed direction, making a sharp turn to the right. The entire snow carriage team veered with it, swerving off the land and darting onto the frozen surface of the lake.

Marquis Xuanping’s snow carriage, which was trailing at the very end of the group, was nearly flung off-course by the sudden maneuver!

To think he had initially found driving this vehicle exhilarating.

Now all he felt was the looming threat of death!

Chang Jing really had grown up riding snow carriages; his nerves were no ordinary nerves!

Marquis Xuanping’s face had gone completely numb from the cold wind.

And just moments after they made that sharp turn, the avalanche swallowed the exact spot they had just crossed, sweeping straight over it and even burying a small mountain in its path.

If not for Spirit King’s sudden swerve, the entire snow carriage team would have been buried under the snow by now.

Marquis Xuanping let out a breath of relief.

But before he could fully exhale, a cracking sound burst from the ice behind him.

His brow twitched.

Crack!

Crack! Crack! Crack!

A series of muffled fractures echoed beneath the ice, and white fissures began to spread from within the ice sheet, making the whole frozen surface look like a shattered piece of icy-blue amber candy about to break apart.

The water beneath the ice was chillingly cold; fall into it, and in moments your entire body would go numb.

In this kind of freezing temperature, not even the greatest martial expert could swim their way to survival.

Crack!

Marquis Xuanping’s mouth twitched. “Could we really be this unlucky? We just escaped an avalanche, and now this.”

Spirit King was already moving at its absolute limit, but it had no choice; it had to break through that limit once more, or it, its pack, and the human they were carrying would all perish here.

Gritting its teeth, Spirit King charged forward head-on into the wind.

The ice on both sides of the path cracked first, leaving no way to veer off and reach land. It had no option but to push straight ahead.

Boom!

The ice beneath the snow carriage finally gave out completely and shattered.

Just as the carriage was about to plunge into the icy chasm, Spirit King suddenly surged forward at full speed!

The snow carriage shot across in a flash!

Spirit King led the icefield wolves in a desperate sprint, the ice cracking open in a jagged path right behind the carriage!

This was far more dangerous than any battlefield. Fighting in war meant clashing with people, something still within human control.

But this. This was a battle of survival against the extreme wrath of the entire frozen tundra. One misstep and the whole unit would be wiped out!

Marquis Xuanping’s heart had leapt into his throat.

In all his life, he had never experienced anything this thrilling or perilous.

A few more rounds like that and his heart really wouldn’t hold up.

Fortunately, they finally made it to shore.

Man and icefield wolves alike collapsed onto the snowy ground, panting heavily for breath.

Most of the time, Spirit King would obey its master’s orders when moving forward, but the moment danger arose, it would disobey and take the lead in seeking out a safer route.

Marquis Xuanping laughed, “Thank heavens it’s not some clueless brute, but an experienced and battle-hardened king of wolves.”

Marquis Xuanping took out dry rations and food, shared it with the icefield wolves to fill their stomachs, and prepared to set off again.

However, this time, no matter what was said, Spirit King refused to move.

Marquis Xuanping got off the snow carriage and walked to the very front of the team, checking Spirit King’s reins and claws.

Everything was in perfect condition.

“Spirit King, it’s time to go.” Marquis Xuanping gave its powerful back a firm pat.

But Spirit King remained completely motionless.

Description:

In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.

When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.

The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.

From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.

***

Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.

After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"

Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"

Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”

Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
