Also, many thanks to everyone who bought me coffee (*≧∀≦*)
On the tenth day of the twelfth month, snow had fallen throughout the entire night over the capital of the State of Zhao.
When Yu Jin rose before dawn, she nearly couldn’t open the door.
“The snow’s really piled up, hasn’t it? It’s even blocked the door... Someone, come here!” She called.
A rough-handed servant woman arrived with a shovel, clearing away the ice and snow from her doorway and pulling the door open for her. “I was just about to come shovel the snow. I didn’t think you’d be up this early.”
Yu Jin showed no hint of blame. It was indeed she who had risen early. She glanced toward the direction of the southern wing and asked softly, “Has the young master gotten up yet?”
The servant replied, “It seems not. I haven’t heard any movement.”
Yu Jin nodded. “Understood. Go on with your work.”
“Yes.” The servant walked off to clear the courtyard snow, moving gently so as not to disturb anyone.
Inside the southern wing, Shangguan Qing had been awake for some time. He and his mother had talked late into the night, and it wasn’t until past midnight that Princess Xinyang, overcome by the drowsiness of pregnancy, finally drifted off.
Shangguan Qing had not taken the antidote from the Imperial Advisor’s Hall. The poison within his body tormented him without mercy, making sleep impossible.
Of course, he had never intended to sleep anyway.
He gazed quietly at Princess Xinyang lying beside him.
This was his mother, the woman who had carried him for ten months and brushed past death itself to bring him into this world.
She was very gentle.
Perhaps also strict in her way, but he hadn’t really had the chance to feel that, had he?
Dawn was approaching, and the increasing agony in his body told him he needed to leave soon.
“It’s progressing even faster than I thought…”
On the road here, he had believed he had three more days. By dinner, he vaguely felt he had only one left.
But now——
He clutched his chest.
It felt like his heart was about to explode, and he was struggling to breathe.
“Elder brother”
Xiao Heng’s low voice came from outside the door.
Shangguan Qing wanted to respond, but he was afraid of waking Princess Xinyang.
“I’m coming in.” Xiao Heng said.
The door opened, and Xiao Heng stepped inside.
He saw Shangguan Qing sitting at the edge of the bed, drenched in cold sweat. His face was frighteningly pale, his lips were darkening, and his entire body was trembling.
Xiao Heng’s eyes darkened sharply. He strode forward and caught Shangguan Qing just as he collapsed from the bedside.
Shangguan Qing slumped into his arms and whispered weakly, “Take… me away…”
Holding him, Xiao Heng looked toward the bed where Princess Xinyang lay with her eyes wide open, biting her finger to stop herself from crying out. His throat tightened painfully.
“…Alright. I’ll take you away.”
Xiao Heng helped Shangguan Qing up, draping his arm around his own shoulders, and step by step, carried him toward the door.
Just as Shangguan Qing was about to step over the threshold, his body suddenly went limp, and he collapsed completely.
Xiao Heng caught him in alarm. “Elder brother!”
“Qing’er——”
All the strength Princess Xinyang had held onto crumbled in that one instant. She could no longer bring herself to grant his request. She did not want him to die out there!
She couldn’t bear the thought of his body turning cold in some lonely place, far from anyone’s reach!
She rushed forward, dropped to her knees, and embraced Shangguan Qing, who lay limp in her arms like a lifeless, broken puppet.
“Qing’er… don’t go… don’t leave your mother… don’t… don’t…”
Scorching tears fell in heavy drops onto his cheeks, soaking into his eyes.
A single tear slipped down from the corner of his eye.
Mother, I’m sorry.
I can no longer be your son.
But I never once regretted being born to you.
Thank you for bringing me into this world.
The human world is truly beautiful.
I really liked it.
Princess Xinyang clutched her son tightly. She could feel him slipping away, and it shattered her heart. Her tears fell without restraint, like a dam breaking. “Qing’er—Qing’er—!”
Xiao Heng turned away, his eyes red and swollen.
Yu Jin stood just outside the door, covering her mouth tightly, but still could not stop the tears from spilling down her cheeks.
Why… why must the heavens be so cruel?
The princess had only just reunited with her son for a single day, only to lose him again——
How many times must the princess suffer the agony of losing a child?
Yu Jin began to cry in grief and anguish.
In the courtyard, the servants all quietly turned their faces away, wiping their eyes in secret.
There could be no cruelty greater than this in all the world...
Crash!
The front gate of the courtyard was kicked open with such force that the entire door panel toppled over, landing squarely on the bonsai plants Princess Xinyang had nurtured herself.
The servants were about to shout in outrage when a figure, covered in dust from a long journey, strode in. “Your Highness the Eldest Imperial Grandson! I was sent by the Young Commander to deliver a life!”
The servants were stunned. What on earth was this person saying?
The Shadow Division expert cleared his throat. “Wait! That’s wrong! I meant, I was sent by Commander Xiao to deliver the medicine to save a life! Got tongue-tied in a panic!”
“Give it here, quickly!” Xiao Heng understood what was meant, and without waiting for the man to bring it over, he strode over himself.
The Shadow Division expert, having seen Xiao Heng’s portrait before, handed over the medicine with a respectful bow.
There were two vials in total, along with a handwritten note.
The note read: First administer the white fruit from the white jade bottle. If there is no improvement, then give the brown pill from the emerald bottle. The fruit is from the purple herb plant, which is non-toxic. The brown pill is extracted from purple herb roots, highly poisonous.
The handwriting was Gu Jiao’s.
Xiao Heng didn’t hesitate for even a second. Without any doubts, he ran back into the room, pried open his brother’s mouth, and placed the white fruit inside.
But his expression turned grave. “He can’t swallow it!”
“Let me!”
The Shadow Division expert dashed over and slapped Shangguan Qing’s chest with a palm strike. The fruit slipped down into his stomach.
Princess Xinyang looked at the Shadow Division expert in astonishment, then turned her gaze to Xiao Heng, asking in a daze, “What… what did you just feed your brother?”
Xiao Heng replied, “It’s… medicine JiaoJiao sent someone to deliver.”
He couldn’t call it an antidote yet, because there was still no guarantee that it would work.
If it failed, then Shangguan Qing would have no choice but to take the deadly purple herb poison.
What nine deaths for one life? It was more like a hundred deaths for the barest chance of survival.
And even if he survived, who knew what terrible side effects might follow?
Shangguan Qing, you must get better, no matter what.
Once you recover, I’ll call you “elder brother” as many times as you want.
But the person lying in Princess Xinyang’s arms showed no response.
Xiao Heng, hands trembling, picked up the emerald porcelain bottle. From this point forward, their only choice was to try the purple herb poison…
“Eh, eh, eh! Quick, look!” The Shadow Division expert pointed at Shangguan Qing’s fingers. “He moved! He moved!”
Mother and son turned in unison to look at his fingertip.
Though it was extremely faint, it really did move.
The Shadow Division expert stared at his face and said in Yan language, “His forehead... it's not so dark anymore!”
Princess Xinyang looked at Xiao Heng, tears brimming in her eyes, choking with sobs as she said, “I… I don’t understand what he’s saying…”
But Xiao Heng gave a relieved smile, the first he had shown in an entire month. “He said elder brother’s forehead is no longer dark… that means the poison in his body is gradually lessening… the purple herb fruit worked… we don’t have to give him the purple herb poison anymore…”

Description:
In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.
When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.
The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.
From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.
***
Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.
After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"
Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"
Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”
Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
