Ever since Xiao Heng had decided to help Long Yi recover his memories, he had started teaching him how to speak and recognize characters. But according to Xiao Heng, what Long Yi preferred most was drawing.
The picture depicted a man caught in a blizzard, pinned beneath a glacier. The ice beneath him was fracturing, and off in the distance, beneath another sheet of ice, drifted a small red box.
Near the icy plain, a continuous range of mountains stretched across the background.
It was the Beiling Pass of Great Yan.
At that moment, Gu Jiao understood everything.
The man pinned beneath the glacier was none other than Marquis Xuanping. He had crossed the harsh frozen plains on foot, and just as he was about to reach the border of the State of Yan, he had encountered a glacier collapse.
He might not have even realized that he had already made it to the border.
Only a single li(approx. 500 meters) remained between him and the shore.
He had become the first person to traverse the icefields in the heart of a brutal winter storm, creating a miracle that defied imagination.
But unfortunately, he had poured all of that miracle into saving his son, leaving not even a sliver of hope for himself.
Long Yi must have passed by that place purely by chance, and it was Marquis Xuanping who chose to give up his own life.
In the dead of winter, crushed beneath a glacier and submerged under the icy waters, even his body would never be recovered.
The small box sitting on the table suddenly felt as heavy as a thousand pounds.
Would Ah Heng be heartbroken when he heard this?
Last time, it had been a mudslide. This time, it was a glacier. Why had she dreamed of the first, but not the second?
Gu Jiao couldn’t understand it. But no matter what, she could not allow herself to be consumed by the weight of her emotions. This was something Marquis Xuanping had bought back with his life, she couldn’t let his sacrifice be in vain.
Gu Jiao peeled off the red wax sealing the box and opened it, discovering inside not only several whole stalks of the purple herb, but also a box of violet-colored flowers and another box of white fruits, each about the size of a marble.
Tucked into the upper compartment of the box was a letter.
It was a handwritten letter from Marquis Xuanping himself, detailing everything he had learned about the purple herb while on Hidden Night Island.
The roots and rhizomes of the purple herb were highly toxic. The flowers were poisonous too, though not as deadly as the roots. The fruit, however, could neutralize the herb’s poison.
But whether or not the purple herb fruit could counteract other types of poison remained uncertain.
On the bright side, the purple herb fruit was completely non-toxic and had no side effects, unlike the herb itself, which was a gamble between life and death.
Gu Jiao said, “If it can cure Shangguan Qing’s poison, that would be ideal. If not, then we’ll still have to resort to using the purple herb.”
No opportunity could be wasted.
Gu Jiao quickly went to the alchemy room, grabbed a handful of the purple herb, and extracted the toxin from its root, which she then simmered into medicinal pills using the stove.
Once the pills were sealed and ready, she summoned Wenren Chong. “I need to head out.”
Wenren Chong caught the faint scent of medicine clinging to her robes and more or less understood what was going on. “Are you going after the Eldest Imperial Grandson? I’m afraid you won’t catch up to him. Just this morning, a message came in by pigeon from the Shadow Division; the water route they took had already frozen over last night.”
This ice was not the kind of thick sheet found on the ice plains, the kind one could still travel over from above.
Gu Jiao frowned. “Then we’ll have to go by land... but can we make it in time by land? Doesn’t matter. Whether we can or not, we have to try!”
She paused for a moment, then said, “Send someone from the Shadow Division!”
“Yes!”
Wen Renchong responded promptly.
Most of the Shadow Division had gone with Liao Chen to campaign against the State of Jin. Only a few remained at the camp, and the one Wen Renchong summoned was a shadow soldier named Cen Yang, who had been specially assigned to the camp by Liao Chen for the purpose of maintaining contact with Gu Jiao.
Cen Yang gave Gu Jiao a formal bow. “Young Commander.”
Everyone in the camp referred to her as the “Young Commander.” At first, she hadn’t understood what they were saying, thinking it was just an accent issue and they were actually calling her “Commander Xiao.” By the time she realized what they truly meant, it was already too late to order them to change it. [T/N: Little/Young = xiǎo (小) | surname Xiao = Xiāo (萧) ]
So she simply let them call her that.
Gu Jiao asked, “The Shadow Division once stayed in the State of Zhao. Are there any hidden posts along the way?”
“Yes, there are Shadow Division agents near every post station. Is Young Commander trying to gather intelligence on something?”
“I need to get something to the capital of the State of Zhao as fast as possible!”
“The capital of the State of Zhao?” Cen Yang walked over to the table, looked at the map spread on top, and pointed at it as he said, “The fastest route would be via water through Tongzhou Port, but unfortunately, the bay at Tongzhou froze over last night... so the only option now is Yunzhou. The bay there hasn’t frozen yet, but judging by this weather, it likely will soon.”
Gu Jiao murmured, “So what you mean is, I need to board a ship before the bay at Yunzhou freezes over?”
Cen Yang nodded. “Yes. The water near the port is shallow and flows slowly, making it the first to freeze. The river’s center doesn’t freeze quite as fast.”
Gu Jiao’s expression turned firm. “Understood. I’ll set out for Yunzhou immediately!”
The distance from here to Yunzhou was at least three hundred li. In such severe weather, the difficulty of travel would be greatly increased.
She would have to choose the most suitable horse.
The Black Wind King, as if sensing something, appeared resolutely at the entrance of the tent.
But she couldn’t ride the Black Wind King anymore. Ever since it arrived at the border, it had fought in more than ten major and minor battles. In particular, it had sustained grave injuries during the fierce battle at the southern city gate of Pucheng.
Even after that, it hadn’t rested. It had continued to fight by her side for a long time.
She couldn’t let it take any more risks.
Gu Jiao went to the stables.
The Black Wind Cavalry was the earliest-formed and most elite force in the Xuanyuan Army, but before reinforcements had arrived, they had already engaged in many desperate fights. By now, they were covered in wounds.
The warhorses in their prime needed time to recover.
Yet the moment Gu Jiao stepped inside, all the warhorses immediately assumed combat readiness.
They were still willing to fight!
Gu Jiao clenched her fingers slightly.
“Young Commander…” Wen Renchong led over a ten-year-old warhorse. “Let’s take this one. It’s only fought in one battle, sustained a minor injury, and has already fully recovered.”
Gu Jiao asked, “Is there no horse that hasn’t been injured at all?”
Wen Renchong replied, “There are, but they’ve either gone to the front lines, or they’re the young Black Wind Cavalry horses that only carry supplies.”
At that moment, a three-year-old Black Wind Cavalry horse came galloping over with a rhythmic clatter. It trotted and hopped in front of Gu Jiao several times, as if showing off its strength to her.
Gu Jiao recognized it.
It was the young Black Wind Cavalry that had fallen off a waterfall while crossing the mountains. The Black Wind King had saved it in time, though the grain on its back had all been lost.
It had been very downcast until Gu Jiao placed the herbs she had gathered onto its back.
“Only two months, and it’s grown a lot.” Gu Jiao murmured as she examined its body. She found it to be robust and powerful. Though just over three years old, its muscles were packed with explosive strength.
“Little Black Wind Cavalry horse, whether the antidote makes it onto the ship before the freeze now depends on you.”
……
The journey to Yunzhou spanned three hundred li, and the young Black Wind Cavalry horse pushed its speed to the limit.
In the bitter cold of winter, snow had fallen everywhere, and the roads were treacherous and difficult. Several times, the young Black Wind Cavalry horse slipped and nearly lost its footing, its hairs standing on end from the danger!
But it did not feel fear, did not hesitate, and did not even slow down.
It charged headlong into the howling wind, galloping on the endless official road as though it were about to take flight.
In terms of raw potential, it wasn’t among the finest; Gu Jiao had seen better, like the Black Wind King and Little Eleven.
Yet this young Black Wind Cavalry horse possessed a will that refused to admit defeat, a spirit that would never bend.
Along the way, horse and rider had taken a fall, but it said nothing and got right back up, charging forward once more.
It carried Gu Jiao and continued their mad dash without pause!
Amidst the wind and snow, it was its own king!
A grueling charge of three hundred li through a snowstorm would have worn down even an uninjured Black Wind King.
The young Black Wind Cavalry horse’s stamina was gradually wearing thin.
Gu Jiao’s hands had long since frozen into stiff claws, her cheeks and lips so numb from the cold she could barely form words. “Little Black Wind Cavalry horse, just hang on a bit longer, we’re almost at Yunzhou!”
The young Black Wind Cavalry horse was panting, gritting its teeth, forcing its swaying body upright, and then, like an arrow loosed from a bow, it bolted toward the city gates of Yunzhou——

Description:
In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.
When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.
The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.
From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.
***
Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.
After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"
Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"
Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”
Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
