Also, many thanks to everyone who bought me coffee (*≧∀≦*)

At that time, Marquis Xuanping returned to their chamber reeking of wine, stumbling as he walked, but the moment the door shut, his drunken demeanor vanished entirely.

He said to her softly, “I’m not drunk. Don’t be afraid.”

Princess Xinyang gripped the dagger tightly inside her wide sleeve.

He picked up the from the table and used it to lift her bridal veil.

She remembered clearly the look in his eyes at that moment——pure, radiant, filled with a youthful warmth that bore no resemblance to the rumors of his roguish ways.

Dressed in brilliant red wedding robes, his features as delicate as carved jade, he carried the bashful joy of a groom on his wedding night, bending slightly to smile down at her.

Yet what greeted him was a cold blade nearly stabbing into his chest.

“Don’t touch me, or I’ll kill you!”

“This is the Emperor’s order, I never wished to marry you.”

“We’ll keep up appearances only, no need for any real husband and wife relationship. You can take as many concubines as you want. I won’t interfere.”

“And naturally, don’t interfere in my affairs either.”

“In the future, if I do not summon you, you are not to set foot in the Princess Mansion, not even a single step!”

She watched the warmth in his smile freeze little by little, like a flawless piece of jade she had shattered with her own hands.

She felt the cold aura emanating from his body.

She thought he would snatch away her dagger and then disgrace her in the worst possible way.

But he didn’t.

He only asked, “Qin Fengwen, are you serious?”

After receiving her affirmation, he gave a cold laugh, straightened up, tossed away the jade Ruyi in his hand, tore off the silk sash and the wedding flowers from his robes, and left the wedding room plastered with red wedding characters without looking back.

Their marriage ended before it even began.

She thought, perhaps that was for the best.

One day, there was a torrential downpour. Her carriage broke down halfway through the journey, and she was drenched like a drowned rat.

His troops happened to be passing through the street at that moment.

She turned her back, unwilling to face him, unwilling to let him see her in such a miserable state.

But he still saw her.

She thought for sure he would mock her ruthlessly and take the chance to get back at her for that wedding night.

But still, he didn’t.

The young general dismounted, took off his rain cloak, and handed it to her.

She didn’t take it.

She didn’t dare touch anything that belonged to a man.

He tilted his head slightly, frowned as he looked at her, then stepped forward and draped the cloak over her shoulders.

It was the first time, since she had grown up, that she had been so physically close to a man. Her face turned pale, and she could barely breathe.

“Go away! Don’t touch me!” She turned her face away and said coldly, then flung off the rain cloak he had placed on her.

He froze for a moment, a flash of confusion passing through his eyes. Then, quickly, he bent down to pick up the mud-stained cloak, mounted his horse again, and left without a single word.

The rain poured down relentlessly. Long Yi and the others weren’t around, and the guards were slow in fixing the carriage; she was on the verge of freezing.

Not long after, a brand-new carriage emerged from the pouring rain and came to a halt right in front of her.

The coachman handed her an umbrella and said, “Madame, a young gentleman just now asked us to come pick you up.”

She always tried her best to avoid that man, and yet she always ended up running into him, especially in the rare moments when she found herself in such disheveled circumstances.

When she had taken Xiao Heng out to buy some snacks once, this four-year-old of hers had caused some trouble, then begged Long Yi to take him away so he could hide from the consequences.

As a result, she ended up walking the crowded streets with only Yu Jin by her side.

Because of the Lantern Festival that took place once every three years, people from all over had poured into the capital.

She and Yu Jin were separated in the crowd, and she was pushed to the edge of the street, where she accidentally knocked over an elderly woman’s stall. The old woman wailed and shouted for compensation, but the money was with Yu Jin.

The old woman clung to her leg and cried so loudly that it drew the attention of everyone nearby.

She stood there helpless, not realizing at all that her hair and clothes had long since become a disheveled mess in the crush of people.

“Official Xiao, do you know that woman?”

Upstairs, at the Soft Fragrance Pavilion, a gaudily dressed courtesan leaned lazily against his side, leisurely enjoying the spectacle below.

“My wife.” He replied.

The courtesan froze for a moment, then covered her mouth with a fan and giggled. “So she’s the princess you’ve been neglecting at your estate? Honestly, she doesn’t look like much.”

She lowered her head and only then realized just how rumpled her appearance had become.

She looked at the crowd surging toward her, at the leering gazes of several men, and suddenly, her illness flared up.

Out of nowhere, a thick cloak was draped tightly over her, and someone grabbed her wrist and pulled her out of the suffocating crowd.

……

There were some things that, if you didn’t think too deeply about them, seem insignificant, but once you start recalling them carefully, you realize that what existed between them wasn’t as disconnected as the world believed.

She had seen him practicing swordsmanship, had seen him galloping proudly on horseback, and he, too, had seen her at her most wretched, the kind of wretchedness she could never confess to anyone else.

They had met in the residence, crossed paths on the street, brushed past each other in the palace, always like strangers, always pretending not to see each other.

Princess Xinyang said faintly, “Ever since Old Liang Wang died, it seems my illness has eased a little.”

Yu Jin was shocked and choked up. “Princess…”

She stood up while holding her abdomen and said, “Ah Heng has gone to prepare the funeral arrangements. You should go as well.”

“Yes.” Yu Jin wiped away her tears and retreated sorrowfully.

The princess is too pitiful, so young and already widowed.

What would become of the Little Marquis? What about the young master?

And what about the unborn child?

Yu Jin made a trip to the Marquis Estate to notify them to prepare for the funeral, too.

The gate of the courtyard had finally been repaired, and Gao Qiang came to bid her farewell.

Princess Xinyang nodded and thanked him, asking him to take care on his journey.

At dusk, snow began to fall. Large, thick snowflakes drifted down in silence.

In this world, even sorrow fell quietly.

The courtyard was utterly still.

She walked through the snow, her shoes crunching crisply with each step.

Thud!

Something slammed heavily against the courtyard gate.

Her brow furrowed slightly. The servants were all busy in the back, and no one was around to open the door.

She frowned at the tightly closed gate. After a moment’s hesitation, she still walked toward it.

She pulled open the vermilion-red gate. A sudden gust of wind stirred among the falling snowflakes, and the flurry of goose-feather-like snow flew straight at her face. Instinctively, she raised her hand to block it.

When she looked back toward the entrance, there was nothing in sight.

Just as she was about to close the gate, her steps paused.

She stepped over the threshold and glanced toward western street.

Still, there was no one.

At that moment, a low chuckle sounded behind her.

She turned around in a daze.

Amid the swirling snow, a tall, travel-worn man stood leaning casually against the cold stone wall, arms folded, his long legs stylishly planted in the snow.

His entire body was covered in dried bloodstains. His face was pale, his breath faint and weak.

He tilted his head and looked at her. Against the glow of the snow, his handsome, bloodless face revealed a crooked, unruly smile at the corners of his lips. “Qin Fengwen, you really do look awful when you cry.”

Description:

In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.

When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.

The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.

From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.

***

Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.

After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"

Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"

Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”

Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
