Also, many thanks to everyone who bought me coffee (*≧∀≦*)
The light reflected off the snow illuminated the wintry night sky, and behind him, thousands of household lights glowed warmly.
Amidst the wind and snow, there was suddenly a fleeting warmth of reunion.
Princess Xinyang stared at him in a daze, momentarily forgetting how to speak.
It wasn’t until he let out a low chuckle and said, “What’s wrong? So happy to see this Marquis that you’re speechless?”
Princess Xinyang quickly composed herself, the look of shock vanishing from her face as she furrowed her brows and sternly refuted his last words, “I wasn’t crying.”
She had cried that morning, but that was because of Qing’er. She thought Qing’er was going to die.
When she received the news that he might never return, she didn’t shed a single tear!
Marquis Xuanping raised an eyebrow and pointed at her chest, saying, “You cried in your heart. I heard it.”
Princess Xinyang: “…”
Princess Xinyang’s expression darkened, and at last, she was certain the man standing before her was real, neither a lingering ghost that refused to pass on, nor an imposter disguised in his likeness.
He was exactly that very man, without a shred of falsehood.
Marquis Xuanping, Xiao Ji.
Princess Xinyang turned her face to the side and muttered under her breath, “Sure enough, still deserve a beating as ever…”
She really shouldn’t have felt sad for him. So what if the child didn’t have a father?
Who would even want such an unreliable father?
The baby in her belly gave a slight kick.
Without any change in expression, Princess Xinyang subtly adjusted her cloak.
“Weren’t you…” Princess Xinyang had meant to say, weren’t you dead? But with the festive season upon them, mentioning death felt inauspicious, so she changed her words, “Didn’t you fall into the frozen lake? How did you come back so soon?”
“So you knew about that…” Marquis Xuanping gave her a look filled with hidden meaning. “Did you specifically send someone to the State of Yan’s border to investigate this Marquis’s whereabouts?”
Princess Xinyang suddenly felt an itch in her fist.
Marquis Xuanping, dancing at the edge of death, continued to tempt fate with nonchalance. “This Marquis had barely left for a while, and already you couldn’t bear the separation.”
Princess Xinyang placed a hand over her belly, concealed beneath the wide cloak, and took a deep breath, Can’t I really kill him?!
The truth was, what happened that day had been genuinely perilous.
Half of his body had been trapped beneath a collapsed glacier, and the ice beneath him had begun to fracture under pressure.
The small box he carried had slipped from his grasp and fallen into the icy abyss, swept away by the turbulent currents.
He had told Long Yi that the contents of that small box could save Qin Fengwen’s son’s life.
He didn’t say which son, and Long Yi most likely assumed it was Xiao Heng.
He believed Long Yi would choose Xiao Heng.
But he seemed to have forgotten, only children make choices.
Long Yi was an adult, and a terrifyingly powerful one at that.
With a single command, the icefield wolf beside him leapt into the ice hole. While the icefield wolf went after the box, Long Yi struck the glacier with his sword, splitting it apart.
It had not been an easy feat.
First, the icefield wolf had to withstand Long Yi’s sword qi, and then it had to deal with all the dangers lurking beneath the water.
It was an icefield wolf even stronger than the Hidden Night Island’s Spirit King.
No one knew where Long Yi had gotten such a creature.
At the time, Marquis Xuanping himself had already sustained serious injuries and lost consciousness soon after falling into the water.
When he came to, he was no longer on the icefield, but lying aboard a merchant ship bound for the State of Zhao.
Long Yi was gone. So was the small box.
But he didn’t panic, because he believed Long Yi had successfully delivered the item to Gu Jiao.
As for Long Yi’s supposed “drawing habit,” he knew nothing about that.
“You’re saying… Long Yi knew you were fine, but deliberately said you were dead?” Princess Xinyang looked unconvinced. “That doesn’t sound like him, he’s not that mischievous!”
Marquis Xuanping: “…”
Princess Xinyang continued, “Since you woke up on the ship, how did you know Qing’er had returned?”
Marquis Xuanping replied, “There were members of the Shadow Division on the ship. They had just completed a mission and mentioned that Qing’er and Ah Heng had gone to the State of Zhao.”
The journey since then had been far from smooth.
His injuries hadn’t healed, and after disembarking, he had rushed the rest of the way at breakneck speed.
He wasn’t sure whether the antidote would actually work on his son or not.
In fact, he had already prepared himself for the worst. Even if it didn’t work, no matter what, he had to make it back in time to see his son one last time.
“Qin Fengwen, is Qing’er alright?” He asked in his usual tone, doing his best to mask how weak he really was.
“The antidote seems to be working. The imperial physician said there’s no danger to his life now, though he still hasn’t regained consciousness.” Princess Xinyang said this with a pause, then added calmly, “If you’re worried, go in and see for yourself.”
Marquis Xuanping smiled lightly. “Alright. You go in first. I’ll be right behind you.”
Princess Xinyang pulled her cloak tighter and turned around.
However, after only a few steps, she stopped again. She turned her head and looked back at Marquis Xuanping. “Don’t tell me… you can’t walk?”
Marquis Xuanping grinned. “What, are you offering to help me?”
Princess Xinyang rolled her eyes. “Who wants to help you? I’ll go call someone——”
But as soon as the words left her mouth, she suddenly remembered something.
She had sent the Dragon Shadow Guards back to the fief to protect the child in her belly. Gao Qiang and the carpenter had already left, and there were no men in the residence.
Ah Heng wasn’t here either.
Princess Xinyang hesitated for a moment, then called toward the rear courtyard, “Cui’er, Grannie Zhang, come here for a moment!”
“Yes, Princess!”
The servant girl Cui’er and the cleaning servant Grannie Zhang hurried over, but as soon as they caught sight of Marquis Xuanping who stood at the gate, covered in blood, they screamed in unison, “Ghost——”
Without the slightest regard for the princess’s instructions, they turned tail and fled in utter panic!
They dropped their candles and joss paper all over the ground, along with a white lantern with the word memorial written on it.
Marquis Xuanping’s mouth twitched. “Qin Fengwen, don’t tell me you were holding a funeral for this Marquis?”
Did he really return just in time for his own memorial service?
Had he arrived any later, would the coffin already be prepared so he could just lie down in it and save them the trouble of building a tomb?
“Who knew you were still alive…” Princess Xinyang muttered under her breath.
She closed her eyes, took a deep breath, and reminded herself that he was the father of her three children, she couldn’t actually let him die here.
She walked over, reached out with a neutral expression, hesitated slightly, then steeled herself and grabbed his arm.
It was the first time in her fully conscious state that she had taken the initiative to get physically close to a man.
It still took a great deal of courage, and she still wasn’t used to it, but at least she didn’t tremble in fear like she used to.

Description:
In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.
When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.
The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.
From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.
***
Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.
After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"
Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"
Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”
Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
