Also, many thanks to everyone who bought me coffee (*≧∀≦*)

Marquis Xuanping glanced down at her hand, which was pinching a bit of fabric from his sleeve with two fingers. She was clearly nervous, but had mustered all her courage.

He couldn’t help but burst into laughter. “Qin Fengwen…”

“Shut up!” Princess Xinyang said sternly. “Say one more word and I won’t help you at all!”

Marquis Xuanping: “You’re not really helping anyway…”

Those two fingers had only managed to clutch a bit of fabric, they hadn’t even touched his arm, let alone supported him.

Still thinking she had done her duty, Princess Xinyang shot him a frosty glare, as if to say: “I’m already helping you, why aren’t you moving? Men really are melodramatic!”

Thinking of her condition, Marquis Xuanping knew that for her to take this step had not been easy. So he refrained from making another snarky comment, clenched his jaw, endured the pain, and straightened his stiff body.

Then, dragging his nearly numb feet, he slowly began making his way toward the courtyard gate.

The moment he stepped over the threshold, a cold wind swept through and blew open Princess Xinyang’s cloak.

Out of instinct, Marquis Xuanping glanced at her with the corner of his eye.

What he saw was a belly, prominently rounded and high.

He jolted in shock, his eyes snapping to her abdomen. “Qin Fengwen.”

Princess Xinyang glanced down at her blown-open cloak and inhaled sharply through her teeth.

Marquis Xuanping stopped in his tracks. He narrowed his eyes and looked at her with a hard-to-read expression. “You’re pregnant? From that night?”

It wasn’t his fault he didn’t know. Ever since that night of wild passion, Princess Xinyang had moved back into this residence.

At first, she still visited Bishui Alley to check on Xiao Heng and Gu Jiao, but after the two went to the State of Yan, she stopped going altogether.

Meanwhile, he had moved back into the Marquis Xuanping Estate.

She had hidden the pregnancy so well.

The last time he came to see her before heading off to war, she refused to meet him.

Yu Jin had told him that it was the princess’s time of the month and was in a bad mood.

Tch!

Time of the month!

Princess Xinyang turned her head away stubbornly, refusing to admit anything.

She couldn’t understand what kind of rotten luck she had to use him as an “antidote” twice, and get hit with the consequences both times!

Marquis Xuanping gave her a sidelong glance, half amused, half exasperated. “Heh, well, it was a whole night, after all.”

Princess Xinyang’s face flushed crimson in an instant. How could he say something so shameless with such ease?

She knew he would be this indecent, which was exactly why she hadn’t wanted to tell him!

If he dared say something like, “You really went through a lot of trouble just to get pregnant with this Marquis’s child,” she swore she would whack him with a stick and throw him out on the street!

Thankfully, Marquis Xuanping wasn’t being that despicable, at least not this time.

He gave her a long, penetrating look, and a flicker of danger passed through his eyes. “Qin Fengwen, if I hadn’t made it back in time, were you really planning to hide this child from me and give birth alone?”

Princess Xinyang’s gaze flickered, then she lifted her chin with solemn dignity. “Looks to me like you’ve got plenty of strength left! You don’t need my help anymore!”

With that, she withdrew her hand and ignored Marquis Xuanping completely, heading straight toward her own room.

But the moment she took a step, a sudden, intense contraction hit her belly.

She bent forward, clutching her abdomen as a cry of pain escaped her lips.

Marquis Xuanping’s expression changed instantly. “Qin Fengwen, what’s wrong?”

Could it be that he had upset her so much she went into labor?

Princess Xinyang had already given birth once, this feeling was all too familiar to her.

She raised her hand and gripped his outstretched arm tightly. “I… I think I’m going into labor…”

Marquis Xuanping: (⊙o⊙)!

It had to happen now, of all times, why not earlier or later…

This child… really knows how to pick their moment…

Princess Xinyang grumbled inwardly, the overwhelming pain swallowing her whole, so much so that she couldn’t even spare the energy to worry about her own illness.

Marquis Xuanping didn’t dare provoke her at such a critical moment either. Seeing the agony on her face, he forced himself to stay alert, determined not to collapse at such an important time.

When their previous children were born, he had always been stationed at the military camp, only rushing back the next day after receiving the news.

This was the first time he was properly present for a woman in labor.

To be honest, he had just returned, only to attend his own funeral and now, by some twisted coincidence, Xinyang was going into labor.

“Even crossing an icefield wasn’t this intense…” he murmured to himself.

“What did you say?” Princess Xinyang’s mind was clouded with pain, and she didn’t catch what he had said.

“N-Nothing.” He replied.

How exactly were women supposed to give birth, anyway?

“Where’s Yu Jin?” He asked.

“…Not here.”

Shes out handling your funeral arrangements.

“What about Ah Heng?”

“…Also not here.”

He’s handling your funeral too.

Even the reliable old servants and servant girls of the courtyard had been sent out to purchase items needed for the mourning hall, leaving behind only a bunch of novices. No wonder they all scattered in terror when they thought they saw the ghost of Marquis Xuanping.

“I’m fine now.” Princess Xinyang exhaled deeply and said.

Marquis Xuanping blinked, startled. “You’re… not giving birth anymore?”

Princess Xinyang shot him a glare.

What did he mean by “not giving birth anymore”?

It was just that the contraction had passed.

Contractions came in waves, after all. It wasn’t nonstop pain.

“I’m going back to my room.” She let go of his arm and said calmly, “I don’t need your help. I can walk on my own.”

“Oh.” Marquis Xuanping nonchalantly pulled his hand back.

Princess Xinyang glanced at him and chuckled coldly, “You look almost disappointed.”

Marquis Xuanping thought: Other men’s wives get carried in when they give birth, or at the very least, they’re supported in. My wife? She marches in on her own, upright and unfazed.

Princess Xinyang snorted and strode toward the north wing of the rear pavilion, which was the birthing room that had long been prepared.

But just as she stepped onto the platform, she froze in place.

Marquis Xuanping tilted his head and looked at her.

Princess Xinyang gritted her teeth and clenched her fists. “…Come here!”

Marquis Xuanping raised an eyebrow. “What now?”

Didn’t you insist on walking by yourself? Didn’t you say you didn’t need my help?

Princess Xinyang didn’t even need to think to guess what he was thinking. Her labor pains must have been triggered purely from being that angry at him!

And yet, there was nothing nearby to grab onto for support. She stood rigidly on the step, unable to move forward or back.

“…My water just broke.” She said.

Description:

In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.

When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.

The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.

From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.

***

Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.

After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"

Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"

Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”

Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
