After returning to Shengdu, Gu Jiao buried her achievements and reputation in silence, and handed over the task of being embraced by the people to Liao Chen.

As for herself, she went back to the Duke An Estate.

When Steward Zheng saw her, he was so overwhelmed with emotion that tears poured down his face. “Young Master, Young Master! You’re finally back!”

Gu Jiao dismounted with a flip and handed him the red-tasseled spear.

Steward Zheng was immediately knocked to the ground under its weight.

…Young Master, the spear’s kinda heavy, you know.

“Where’s my adoptive father?” Gu Jiao asked.

Steward Zheng waved to the servants, and two of them came forward to lift the red-tasseled spear together. Only then did he spring to his feet and reply to Gu Jiao, “Lord Duke has gone to the Imperial Advisor's Hall!”

After successfully escorting Grandaunt’s party into the territory of the State of Zhao, Duke An returned with Wang Xu.

He remained in Shengdu, while Wang Xu went on to the borderlands.

“Mm.” Gu Jiao nodded. “Perfect. I was planning to go to the Imperial Advisor's Hall too.”

In the purple bamboo grove, Duke An was sitting in a wheelchair, playing a game of chess with the Imperial Advisor.

Yu He was sweeping fallen flower petals in the courtyard. When he spotted Gu Jiao, his eyes lit up. “Liulang! You’re back!”

“Yu He.” Gu Jiao greeted him.

Yu He glanced behind her. “Huh? Where’s senior brother? Didn’t he go to the border too? Didn’t he come back with you?”

Gu Jiao had already received a letter from the State of Zhao. It talked about the current state of Bishui Alley and Zhuque Street, and also detailed Marquis Xuanping’s experience on the Hidden Night Island.

She hesitated for a moment but ultimately didn’t mention Ye Qing being poisoned. She simply said, “Your senior brother is visiting Hidden Night Island.”

Speaking of, it was quite strange. The Hidden Night Island was usually only frozen through the second month. It was already the fourth month, so why hasn’t Ye Qing returned yet?

Could it be he was too handsome and got kept there as some mountain spouse?

“You mean the Hidden Night Island of the Hidden Night Sect? My senior brother went there?!” Yu He was stunned.

Gu Jiao curved her lips slightly, patted his shoulder, and stepped onto the corridor.

She lifted the curtain and entered the room.

The two people inside had already heard her voice and were waiting for her to arrive.

She had left to go to war in the eighth month of last year; now it was already the fourth month of the new year. They hadn’t seen each other in over half a year, and she had changed a great deal.

She had grown a little taller, her features had become more defined, and months of campaigning under sun and rain, wind and sand had transformed her once-fair skin into a soft wheat color, lending her a more commanding presence.

At the borderlands, who knew how many young women had secretly fallen for the young commander of the Black Wind Cavalry.

“Adoptive father, Lord Imperial Advisor!”

She greeted the two with delight.

Duke An looked at her, unable to shift his gaze.

Even though she had returned safely, the mere thought of everything she had endured at the frontier made his heart ache.

“Come here, let me take a look at you.” Duke An beckoned to Gu Jiao.

“Huh?” Gu Jiao blinked in surprise.

Duke An smiled. “I’ve recovered quite well, I can talk now, and even lift my arms a bit.”

He spoke in an easy, lighthearted tone, but in truth, he had pushed himself to the limits in rehabilitation over the past eight months, all to give her a surprise.

The process had been painful and grueling, yet compared to all the hardships she had endured, his own suffering hardly seemed worth mentioning.

Gu Jiao came to his side, crouched down, and tilted her head up to examine him. “You’re looking pretty good,” she said, then took his pulse and tested the strength of his muscles. “Wow, this is really impressive.”

Much stronger than she had expected.

It probably wouldn’t be long before he could walk again.

“You’ve worked hard. You deserve praise.”

She said it very seriously, but in Duke An’s eyes, it looked just like a little kid solemnly pretending to talk like an adult.

Duke An was immensely delighted. He lifted his hand and rubbed the top of her head, asking, “Did you get hurt?”

“Not at all!” Gu Jiao shook her head without hesitation.

Duke An sighed helplessly. “You’re just like your mother, always reporting the good news and hiding the bad.”

“Hmm?” My mother?

Duke An gave a sheepish smile. “Ah, I meant your adoptive mother.”

“Oh.” She almost thought he knew she had once lived as Jing Yinyin.

Lord Imperial Advisor cleared his throat, reasserting his presence.

Only then did Gu Jiao turn to look at him more carefully. “Eh? Lord Imperial Advisor, have you been working too hard lately? You look…”

…quite a bit older.

The misunderstandings between Duke An and the Imperial Advisor had already been resolved, and recently Duke An often came to visit the Imperial Advisor's Hall. He too had noticed that the Imperial Advisor seemed to be aging faster, as his once-graying hair was now almost entirely white.

Sigh, he already looked old before, and now he looked even older.

Gu Jiao exaggeratedly sighed. “It’s my fault. I shouldn’t have dumped everything on you before I left.”

The Imperial Advisor gave her a sideways glance. “Admitting fault this fast? Doesn’t feel like your usual style.”

Gu Jiao replied, “I’m in a good mood!”

The Imperial Advisor: “Get to the point.”

Gu Jiao counted on her fingers, eyes spinning with mischief. “Well, I heard the State of Jin tributed a batch of high-quality weapons and they were sent to the Imperial Advisor's Hall.”

“Sure enough, your father is the real one, and I’m the adoptive one…” The Imperial Advisor muttered under his breath, then said coolly, “They haven’t arrived yet. Once they do, I’ll pick one and give it to you, as your wedding gift.”

Duke An’s face immediately darkened. “Must you touch the sore spot?”

Marquis Xuanping had been causing quite a stir. Just last month, an envoy from the State of Zhao arrived to formally propose marriage, seeking to wed the Little Marquis of Zhao to the young master of Duke An’s Estate.

“Did adoptive father agree?” Gu Jiao blinked those bright eyes at him.

Her whole face clearly said: Agree, agree, agree!

Duke An refused to answer the question.

At first, he hadn’t planned to agree, but then came Marquis Xuanping’s second wave of antics. He had the envoy bring an entire basket of portraits, each one of his precious little daughter.

From her birth to three months old, sucking on fingers, grabbing her toes, drooling everywhere… all of it unbearably adorable.

The envoy had said with a smile, “Lord Marquis asked me to pass along this message: if the two young masters get married, maybe they’ll give you a chubby little girl just like this.”

He strongly suspected that Marquis Xuanping’s proposal was fake, and the real purpose of the envoy’s thousand-mile journey… was to show off his daughter.

So hateful!

He had fallen into the trap of that guy who made it to the Beauty List of the Six States!

And so, he decided that he would have JiaoJiao and Ah Heng get married as soon as possible. He wanted to hold his cute little granddaughter already!

Description:

In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.

When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.

The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.

From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.

***

Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.

After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"

Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"

Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”

Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
