The State of Zhao experienced a once-in-a-decade harsh winter, with many regions suffering from severe snowstorms. Fortunately, the imperial court responded promptly, allocating relief funds from the state treasury and coordinating with nearby regions to transport supplies to the cities hit hardest by the disaster.

Grand Secretary Yuan, appointed as the imperial envoy for disaster relief, brought along several members of the cabinet on this mission, and Xiao Heng was among them.

Because he had gone on this relief expedition, Xiao Heng had no idea that his own father had sent envoys to the State of Yan to propose marriage, especially not the proposal to the young master of the Duke An Estate.

He was even more clueless about how his father sent people all the way to the State of Yan just to show off his child.

Though he did receive quite a few letters...from the Marquis Estate

“This one’s mine, and this one… is for you, Grand Secretary Yuan.” In the study of the county yamen, Xiao Heng handed over a letter to Grand Secretary Yuan. “A letter from my father.”

Grand Secretary Yuan already knew by now that he was, in fact, the Little Marquis of Zhao.

As soon as he heard the letter was from Marquis Xuanping, he assumed something urgent had happened at court. With a grave expression, he hurriedly took the letter and tore it open.

What greeted him was a flamboyant line of large, sweeping calligraphy: “To the future grandfather-in-law of my daughter-in-law’s older brother, my daughter has just turned one month old. Grand Secretary Yuan, with your vast knowledge and learning, I ask you to bestow her a lovely name.”

Enclosed was a portrait of the Marquis’s daughter.

Grand Secretary Yuan: “…”

Xiao Heng hadn’t meant to peek, but his father’s handwriting was so huge it was practically impossible not to notice.

As expected, a small portrait of his baby sister was tucked inside.

He had lost track of how many “name request” letters his father had already mailed out.

Even his Grandaunt’s household had received one.

And wasn’t his sister’s name already decided ages ago?

Using the excuse of asking for a name just to brag about his daughter, honestly, he’s had enough of it!

When he had a daughter one day, he absolutely wouldn’t act like his father!

……

Zhuque Street.

As spring arrived, the weather in the capital turned bright and pleasant.

Shangguan Qing was in the courtyard practicing horse stance.

After twenty years of poisoning, healing wouldn’t happen overnight, even with the help of purple herb fruit. As the saying went, a foot of ice didn’t form in a single day.

He would need months of recovery. In addition to taking the prescribed herbs daily, he also drank the decoctions prepared by the imperial physician. The physician had also instructed him to exercise more, as it would help strengthen his body.

Marquis Xuanping came by every day to spend time with him and help him stay active. At first, he could only take light walks, but gradually, he had progressed to holding a basic horse stance.

The father and son were healing together, and their recovery was going quite well.

“You go ahead and keep practicing your horse stance.” Marquis Xuanping said seriously after correcting his son’s posture in the courtyard. “The weather’s great today, I'm going to bring your little sister out to get some sun.”

Shangguan Qing rolled his eyes. “Helping me practice is just an excuse, and you just want to cuddle my sister, don’t you?”

His baby sister was now three months old. Her name was Xiao Yi, supposedly a name his mother had picked when she was pregnant with her first child.

The name sounded gentle, and she actually was quite well-behaved... most of the time. The only issue was, she refused to drink from a wet nurse and insisted on being fed directly by their mother.

He vaguely remembered that when he was young, his mother had insisted on personally feeding him as well.

But back to his sister.

Aside from giving their mother a hard time, her other troublesome habit was her crying. It was earth-shaking, ghost-wailing loud. During the day it wasn’t so bad, but come nighttime, her wails could keep the entire street awake.

No one could calm her down, except for their father.

Every afternoon, their father would come visit him, stay for dinner, and then lull the baby to sleep before leaving.

As his sister grew bigger and stayed up later, their father also ended up staying later and later into the night…

Princess Xinyang had gone out, and inside the room, Yu Jin was quietly keeping watch over the soundly sleeping little Xiao Yi.

Xiao Yi had been prettier than most newborns from the moment she was born. After her first month, she had grown even chubbier and more adorable, her charm only increasing by the day.

“Lord Marquis.” Yu Jin greeted with a curtsy when Marquis Xuanping entered.

He nodded in acknowledgment, walked over to the cradle, and looked down at the tiny sleeping bundle inside. Without realizing it, the corners of his mouth curled upward ever so slightly.

Yu Jin stole a subtle glance at him and thought to herself, Lord Marquis really has changed.

Marquis Xuanping raised an eyebrow and said, “So good-looking, clearly takes after me.”

Yu Jin’s face darkened immediately. She took back what she said earlier, nevermind, he was still the same old Marquis!

Not long after, the sound of hooves came from outside. It was Princess Xinyang’s carriage returning.

She had just made a trip to the imperial palace to discuss the marriage between Xiao Heng and Gu Jiao with Empress Dowager Zhuang and Empress Xiao.

Both powerful women had no objections to the marriage, in fact, they were very much in favor of it.

In Empress Dowager Zhuang’s heart, that rascal Ah Heng owed her JiaoJiao a grand and glorious wedding.

Princess Xinyang shared the same sentiment. Back when they were in the countryside, the two of them never had a proper wedding ceremony. Her son had been unconscious, and when he opened his eyes, he had already become someone’s husband.

There had been no bowing to Heaven and Earth, no bridal chamber.

What kind of wedding was that supposed to be?

Besides, he had used another man’s identity back then. Now that he had reclaimed his identity as Xiao Heng, the previous marriage between Little Sixthlang and Gu Jiao essentially no longer held any weight.

Of course, she had her own reasons too.

She wanted to witness her son’s wedding with her own eyes.

The betrothal letter had already been sent to Bishui Alley. Today, her main purpose was to finalize the betrothal gifts and the date of the wedding with Empress Dowager Zhuang and Empress Xiao.

“Princess, you’ve returned.” Yu Jin greeted with a smile, stepping forward to remove her cloak and hang it up neatly. “Did everything go smoothly?”

“Quite smoothly.” Princess Xinyang replied.

“Lord Marquis is here.” Yu Jin whispered softly.

Princess Xinyang turned her head, and sure enough, she saw a certain someone sitting before the cradle, gazing foolishly at the little bundle inside while grinning like an idiot.

Sunlight filtered through the window lattice, falling gently on his mature and handsome face.

His eyes seemed to hold a galaxy of stars.

She turned her face away and muttered flatly, “Why is he here again?”

Yu Jin chuckled and offered, “Shall this servant drive Lord Marquis out, then?”

Princess Xinyang choked a little, then glared at her. “If I throw him out and the little one starts crying, are you going to calm her down?”

Yu Jin covered her mouth and barely held back her laughter.

“Ugh.” Princess Xinyang let out a long sigh.

Yu Jin, ever observant, noticed something odd in the Princess’s demeanor and asked, “What’s wrong, Princess? Did something happen?”

Princess Xinyang frowned slightly and asked with confusion, “When I came out of the inner palace, I happened to run into court dismissal. One after another, they came to me, each trying to name Yi Yi... Did I ask them to name her? Why is everyone suddenly so eager to name my daughter?”

Meanwhile, Marquis Xuanping rocked the cradle with a calm, unbothered look on his face, appearing entirely composed.

Description:

In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.

When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.

The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.

From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.

***

Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.

After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"

Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"

Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”

Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
