Also, many thanks to everyone who bought me coffee (*≧∀≦*)
After exiting the alley, Xuanyuan Qi turned to his son and said, “Jing Kong is doing very well. You were right to entrust him to JiaoJiao.”
Liao Chen responded, “It wasn’t me who entrusted him. That little monk made the choice himself.”
Xuanyuan Qi was slightly surprised. “Oh? Really?”
Liao Chen explained, “Yeah, the family who was supposed to adopt him backed out, and by coincidence, that girl came to the temple to buy the mountain. So the little monk went down with her.”
Xuanyuan Qi grew thoughtful. “Then that truly must be… fate.”
Liao Chen looked deeply at him. “Father, why do I get the feeling that you’re treating that girl a little… differently?”
Xuanyuan Qi gave his son a sidelong glance. “Don’t keep calling her ‘that girl’, show some respect.”
Liao Chen grinned. “Father, she’s twelve years younger than me! She’s Duke An and cousin’s adopted daughter. In terms of seniority, she should be calling me ‘Uncle’!”
Xuanyuan Qi opened his mouth as if to speak, then thought better of it. “Anyway, just don’t call her ‘that girl.’”
“Got it, Father. I’ll call her by her name, alright?” Liao Chen said, eyeing his father. “Or… is even that not allowed?”
Just as Xuanyuan Qi was mulling over how to respond, his ears twitched suddenly. In a flash, he turned his head. “Someone’s headed toward Bishui Alley! It’s an expert!”
Liao Chen narrowed his eyes. “I’ll go check it out!”
With that, he used his qinggong and vanished into the night.
……
Gu Jiao was washing Little Jing Kong’s hair in the backyard when she suddenly sensed a presence rapidly approaching. It felt as though it was coming directly for Little Jing Kong.
Her gaze sharpened, and in the next instant, she turned to shield Little Jing Kong behind her, drawing the red-tasseled spear placed nearby.
However, before she could make a move, Liao Chen arrived.
He didn’t give the intruder a chance to enter the courtyard. Striking out with a palm, he sent the person flying.
Liao Chen immediately gave chase.
Gu Jiao called over Yuya’er to continue washing Little Jing Kong’s hair, and then she too rushed out after them.
Liao Chen had already cornered the intruder in an alley across from their courtyard, and the two had engaged in fierce combat.
But the opponent’s martial strength was inferior to Liao Chen’s, and with another powerful palm strike, Liao Chen sent him crashing violently against the wall behind.
Liao Chen looked at him coldly. “Who are you? What is your purpose?”
Clutching his aching chest, the man didn’t answer his question. Instead, he gritted his teeth and snapped, “You took advantage of me while I was weakened! If I were at full strength, I wouldn’t have lost to you!”
Gu Jiao came to stand beside Liao Chen, fixed her eyes on the man, and said in surprise, “It’s you?”
"Do you know him?" Liao Chen turned to look at Gu Jiao.
Gu Jiao replied, "Oh, he's been tailing us around Bishui Alley for quite some time already. He even bought Jing Kong’s golden abacus. He claims to be some ‘Young Gentleman Ming Yue’."
Liao Chen glanced over at the man again, his gaze cooling, "He's after Jing Kong? Who exactly are you?"
Young Gentleman Ming Yue also recognized Gu Jiao. He rubbed his chest and straightened up, looking irritated as he said to Liao Chen, “I’m not after that little monk! I’m after you!”
“Me?” Liao Chen asked.
Young Gentleman Ming Yue huffed angrily, “These past few years I’ve been trying to track you down! It took me forever to finally trace your whereabouts to your temple, only for you to rarely appear. I had no choice but to watch your disciple instead! I followed him from the State of Zhao to the State of Yan, and then from the State of Yan all the way back to this place…”
However, Liao Chen’s movements had always been too discreet. Even though Young Gentleman Ming Yue kept a constant watch on Little Jing Kong, there were always moments he lost track.
Liao Chen asked in puzzlement, “Why are you after me? I don’t even know you.”
Young Gentleman Ming Yue replied coldly, “You don’t know me, but you injured my man and stole from me! Return what’s mine, or I’ll make you pay!”
“So it’s a matter between the two of you.” Gu Jiao withdrew her murderous aura, held her red-tasseled spear in her arms, and settled in leisurely to enjoy the show.
Liao Chen was not someone easily threatened. He gave a half-smile, a bit mocking, a bit amused, his crimson lips curling slightly as he said, “Oh? You say I took something from you. Do you have any proof?”
Young Gentleman Ming Yue’s face darkened. “The guard who witnessed it is dead. There's no eyewitness. But whether you took it or not, you know best in your heart!”
Liao Chen gave a faint smile. “What exactly did I take from you?”
Young Gentleman Ming Yue shouted in frustration, “A sword!”
“A sword…” Liao Chen let out a lazy laugh, “Well, I have indeed been gifted many swords over the years. The question is, which one of them was given to me by your guard?”
Young Gentleman Ming Yue snapped furiously, “Given to you? Don’t twist it! You snatched it!”
Liao Chen looked at him with a half-smile, clearly not the least bit provoked.
Young Gentleman Ming Yue knew full well that right now he was at a disadvantage. His internal force had taken a hit, and he wasn’t a match for this group.
Fighting was out of the question, his only hope was to reason with them.
He turned to Gu Jiao and said, “Young miss, I spent five hundred taels of silver to buy that abacus from your younger brother. Then you came and snatched it back, without giving me a single coin in return. At the very least, you profited off me. Shouldn’t you vouch for my character, at least a little?”
“Oh.” Gu Jiao looked toward Liao Chen and said, “As you can see, he can take a beating.”
Young Gentleman Ming Yue: “…”
He took a deep breath and said, “Forget it, I won’t argue with you any further. That sword… it’s a treasured weapon my father painstakingly sought out. After he passed away, it became my only memento of him. If you’re willing, name your price, I’ll buy it back from you.”
The man’s straightforward offer piqued Liao Chen’s interest. “What does your sword look like?”
Young Gentleman Ming Yue answered, “It’s a black iron sword, with royal blue peacock feathers engraved on both the scabbard and the hilt.”
Liao Chen narrowed his eyes slightly, then said thoughtfully, “Now that you describe it, I do recall seeing a sword like that.”
A flash of urgency flickered in Young Gentleman Ming Yue’s eyes. “As long as you’re willing to return it to me, I’ll pay whatever you ask!”
Liao Chen spread his hands. “Too bad you came too late. That sword’s no longer in my possession. I found it too heavy, so I threw it away.”
Young Gentleman Ming Yue froze in shock. “Th-threw it away? How could you… You better not be lying to me!”
Gu Jiao thought to herself: What’s there to lie about? This spendthrift monk once threw a Fuxi guqin into a brazier to use as firewood. Tossing your sword is really not that surprising.

Description:
In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.
When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.
The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.
From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.
***
Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.
After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"
Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"
Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”
Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
