Also, many thanks to everyone who bought me coffee (*≧∀≦*)

Liao Chen replied with innocence on his face, “I’m not lying. Believe it or not, I really tossed it.”

“Where did you throw it?” Young Gentleman Ming Yue asked.

Liao Chen smiled. “I don’t remember. I’ve thrown away so many things, how could I possibly keep track of each one?”

Young Gentleman Ming Yue choked, “You——”

“We’re leaving.” Liao Chen no longer paid him any attention and led Gu Jiao out of the alley.

“You really don’t remember?” Gu Jiao asked.

Liao Chen replied coolly, “Even if I did remember, I wouldn’t tell him.”

How dare he lay a hand on his disciple? He clearly didn’t know what death looked like!

Sparing his life today was already too kind!

“Go on inside.” Liao Chen walked Gu Jiao to the doorstep, hesitated for a moment, then ultimately decided to explain. “It happened years ago, back in the State of Yan. I didn’t take it from him by force; his guard practically delivered it to me. The guard was bullying an old man in a roadside teahouse, someone clearly too frail to even fight back. I couldn’t just stand by, so I taught him a lesson. I had no interest in keeping the weapon, so I sold it off to a smithy near Shengdu.”

Gu Jiao immediately understood. “So that’s what really happened.”

……

Back in the alley, the gray-robed guard had located his young master.

Seeing his master with one hand braced against the wall and the other clutching his chest as if wounded, the guard strode forward quickly, supported him by the arm, and asked anxiously, “Young Master! What happened? Are you feeling unwell again?”

Young Gentleman Ming Yue, his face pale, replied, “I tried to catch that little monk just now, but that man appeared out of nowhere…”

The gray-robed guard frowned. “He injured you?”

“My health is getting worse, and I’m no match for him anymore.” Young Gentleman Ming Yue caught his breath, then said, “He claimed the sword isn’t in his possession anymore, and honestly… it didn’t seem like he was lying.”

The guard’s expression changed drastically. “What?! He doesn’t have the sword? Then all this time we spent tailing his disciple, was it all for nothing? Young Master, your condition is only deteriorating. Maybe… maybe it’s time we went back?”

Young Gentleman Ming Yue looked into the dark night, his expression growing complicated. “Without the sword, we can’t go back.”

……

That night, Gu Jiao stayed over at Bishui Alley.

Meanwhile, Duke An left the imperial palace and returned to the residence his retainers had prepared for him.

Steward Zheng had also arrived at the State of Zhao. With a smile, he said to Duke An, “Young maste—uh, no, I should call her young miss now. Young miss won’t be coming back tonight… are you going to be sad?”

Duke An laughed. “What’s there to be sad about? She’s been by my side all this time, it’s only right for her to spend some time with her mother. The more people who dote on her, the happier I’ll be. Ah, right. Remember to double-check that dowry. I still feel like it’s not enough. I want to add more. The wedding was moved up to next month, so we’d better get a move on. Let’s go tomorrow.”

Steward Zheng was dumbfounded.

Seriously, Lord Duke, it’s still not enough for you?

It’s already a ten-mile-long bridal procession!

Even imperial princesses didn’t get such a grand dowry.

Among the dowry were not only the properties Duke An had amassed over the years, but also the dowry Xuanyuan Zi had brought into the Duke Estate back then. When he spent his entire fortune to retrieve the bodies of Xuanyuan Family’s fallen sons, he had never touched Xuanyuan Zi’s dowry.

Now, he was giving all of it to Gu Jiao.

And even then, he wanted to give her more.

……

The next day, Steward Zheng paid a visit to Bishui Alley.

Technically, Duke An should have gone in person to greet Yao shi, but given that Yao shi was a woman and etiquette made such meetings inconvenient, he sent Steward Zheng instead, bearing gifts, which were specialties from the State of Yan, as a formal introduction.

Yao shi responded warmly, “Lord Duke is very thoughtful. Please thank him on my behalf.”

She also had the servants prepare a return gift, which Gu Jiao would bring with her the next time she visited Duke An.

After Steward Zheng left, Gu Jiao began preparing to go out.

She had already greeted Granduncle the night before, but had yet to meet her Grandaunt herself.

She was planning to enter the imperial palace shortly.

Coincidentally, Yao shi wanted to buy Gu Jiao a few beautiful pieces of jewelry. The family had no shortage of jewelry, of course, but most of them were outdated styles. She wanted her daughter to choose something herself.

Mother and daughter scooped up Gu Xiaobao, brought along the candied fruits made by Granduncle, and boarded their carriage.

Their plans for the day were to shop for jewelry first, then head to the imperial palace together to visit Grandaunt.

“Grandaunt.” Gu Xiaobao said.

Gu Jiao looked at him with curiosity.

Yao shi smiled and said, “The Empress Dowager always gives him treats whenever she visits. He adores his grandaunt.”

Today, Gu Xiaobao was dressed in tiger-head shoes and a tiger-head hat. He looked like a tiny little tiger, fierce in spirit but still adorably babyish.

Gu Jiao couldn’t resist. She reached out and gently pinched his chubby cheeks.

“Do you want to be carried by big sister?” Yao shi asked.

Gu Xiaobao immediately dove into his mother’s arms, kicking his little legs in a burst of excitement.

The three of them arrived at Baolin Pavilion, the largest jewelry shop in the capital.

Gu Xiaobao didn’t like walking. Just opening the door for Gu Jiao yesterday had already used up all the steps he was willing to take for the entire month.

When Yao shi tried to set him down, he curled up his little legs tightly, refusing to let his feet touch the ground no matter what.

Helpless, Yao shi had no choice but to carry him in her arms.

Because Gu Jiao was engaged, she followed the capital's customs and wore a veil.

Her birthmark was hidden, and her eyes were so strikingly beautiful that they immediately drew everyone's gaze. But when a breeze lifted her veil, revealing the red birthmark on the left side of her face, everyone around them instantly turned away in disappointment and shook their heads.

Yao shi furrowed her brow and gently took her daughter’s hand, her heart aching.

Gu Jiao said, “I’m fine.”

She had long grown used to such stares.

Yao shi took a deep breath and murmured, “It was the right decision to move the wedding up.”

The gecko cinnabar was almost gone… just a little longer…

“What was that?” Gu Jiao asked.

Yao shi’s eyes flickered, and she gave an awkward laugh. “Ah, I just meant… it’s good that the wedding was moved up.”

As soon as the words left her mouth, a servant girl walked over from the side and called out to Yao shi, “Madame!”

Yao shi paused in her steps and turned along with Gu Jiao to look at the girl.

The servant girl approached and bowed respectfully. “It really is you! And the little young master is here too!”

Gu Xiaobao wore a perfectly indifferent expression.

Description:

In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.

When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.

The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.

From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.

***

Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.

After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"

Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"

Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”

Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
