“Oh no, guye!” Yu Ya’er was the first to spot Xiao Heng.

At her call, the rest of the servants all snapped back to their senses, hurriedly saluted with respect, and stepped aside.

Xiao Heng said nothing, pushed the door open, and went inside.

Little Jing Kong was standing in his little wooden tub, striking a pose, gazing forward with deep emotion: “...Where is my beloved gentleman~”

Then, in the next instant, he switched into full operatic voice, singing with perfect tone and rhythm, “To save my beloved Li Lang I left my home~ Who would have thought I’d win first place in the imperial exam~ Winning the top scholar’s title~ wearing crimson robes~ A palace flower on my hat, oh, how fresh and bright~ ah~”

He was so unbearably pleased with himself, as though he had truly just won first place in the imperial examinations.

The corner of Xiao Heng’s mouth twitched, and he said mercilessly and coldly, “Tomorrow, JiaoJiao won’t be able to go on the outing with you.”

The impassioned singing broke off at once.

“Why?” Little Jing Kong turned around and asked sternly.

Xiao Heng brushed his wide sleeves, lifted his chin, and said, “Because JiaoJiao has a baby in her belly.”

From this day forward, your status is teetering on the edge of danger!

“Good night!”

After saying this, Xiao Heng marched off proudly and confidently.

Little Jing Kong felt as though he had been struck by a thunderbolt on a clear day, his small body swaying unsteadily in the wooden tub.

One hand reached forward, the other clutched at his chest, his expression filled with grief.

With a voice thick with sobs, he sang:

“Life is a ruthless knife~ changing the way we look~ must we wither before we’ve even bloomed~ I once had a dream~”

……

Shangguan Qing went to the Princess Mansion and learned from Princess Xinyang that Gu Jiao was pregnant. He was rather surprised. “So soon…”

His annoying little brother and that girl had been married for less than two months.

Little Yiyi was already asleep, and Marquis Xuanping, after coaxing his daughter, had left the estate with Chang Jing to carry out a mission.

Princess Xinyang glanced at her son and said, “So soon? He’s already twenty, about to turn twenty-one.”

“He’s still young.” Shangguan Qing muttered.

Princess Xinyang said, “Don’t talk about your brother, let’s talk about you. When do you plan to marry? Has your mother made any arrangements?”

Shangguan Qing let out a sigh of deep resentment. “Mother, why are you bringing this up again? Didn’t we agree not to talk about it?”

Princess Xinyang spoke earnestly. “Before, we didn’t bring it up because your health didn’t allow it, and marrying a wife then would have only harmed her. But now you’ve fully recovered and are no different from a normal person, so naturally you can marry and have children like anyone else.”

But Shangguan Qing didn’t want to marry so soon. He still wanted to have fun for a few more years.

Princess Xinyang continued, “Your brother is about to become a father, and you don’t even have a wife yet. Chang Jing, who’s two or three years younger than you, has already brought betrothal gifts to the capital to seek a suitable marriage. I’m not asking you to marry right away. If you agree, I’ll simply start looking for you first.”

Her will was so firm, it looked like he would have a hard time getting out of this.

Shangguan Qing put on an act and said, “But Mother, my standards are very high.”

“How high?” Princess Xinyang asked.

Shangguan Qing’s eyes flashed. “First, she must be as beautiful as you and mom! Then, she must be as gentle as you and as witty as mom, and also… knowledgeable! Educated! Skilled in poetry and prose, proficient in everything!”

He racked his brains, then added, “Martial arts! Yes, she must know martial arts too! And not weaker than my sister-in-law, otherwise how could she protect me?”

Princess Xinyang: “…”

……

Night deepened. The bright moon hung high, and the stars sparkled brilliantly.

Little Jing Kong’s singing had finally stopped, replaced by the steady chorus of cicadas. The two neighboring estates gradually sank into sleep.

The weather was stiflingly hot, and Gu Jiao broke out in sweat.

Because she was pregnant, Xiao Heng did not dare to place too much ice in the room, afraid she might catch a chill.

He fetched a palm-leaf fan and lay down beside her, fanning her gently.

When his left hand grew tired, he switched to his right; when his right grew sore, he switched back to his left.

Back and forth like this, both arms grew numb with ache, and his eyelids began to droop.

At last, after the fan slipped from his hand once more, he closed his eyes and sank into deep sleep.

The night was dark, the wind was high, cicadas chirped from the trees, and frogs croaked from the lotus pond, filling the silence with their calls.

Xiao Heng had left a small candle burning for Gu Jiao.

The faint light cast its glow over the little medicine chest.

Compared to its shabby state when it had first appeared, it now looked much refurbished. Though it still wasn’t dazzling, the brown wooden casing made it seem much more in tune with the era.

Suddenly, a shadow flitted past the window.

Immediately after, the latch on the door was pried open slowly with a dagger.

The wooden door of the bridal chamber made no creak, opening without a sound.

A figure, face covered and dressed as a servant, slipped inside.

The figure first cast a wary glance at the bed with its drawn curtains. Confirming that the two inside had not been awakened, she tiptoed around the room and began searching.

First the cabinet, then the chests, then even the display shelves.

But just as the figure turned around, she suddenly froze in surprise.

She hadn’t expected that the very thing she was looking for was right there on the table, and she had wasted so much time searching elsewhere.

She approached the table, her gaze greedy as it fixed on the little medicine chest. She first tried to pry it open with her hands; when that failed, she took up her dagger and began to force it open.

However, even after failing to pry it open, she curved her lips into a cold smile.

So it’s you!

She put away her dagger and stretched out her arms to lift the little medicine chest.

But something unexpected happened.

What’s going on? Why can’t I lift it? Was the box stuck to something?

But then a thought occurred to her: nevermind, even if the box were stuck, the table wasn’t.

With her strength and cultivation, lifting both together shouldn’t have been a problem at all.

The figure tried a few more times, only to find the table didn’t so much as budge.

So, was it really that the box itself was too heavy for her to move?

No, impossible. She had come this far already.

Even if she couldn’t move it, she had to move it!

The figure sank their breath into their dantian, gathering nearly all of her internal force and channeling it into her arms. Her originally strong arms swelled with veins bulging, as though they might burst through her sleeves at any moment.

Clenching her teeth, the figure roared in her heart!

This time, she finally managed to lift the little medicine chest!

In truth, it was only that initial moment of lifting that was so difficult. Once she got it off the table, it wasn’t nearly as heavy in her hands.

The figure gave a cold sneer, then darted out of the room hugging the chest!

And at the very instant she melted into the night, inside the curtained bed, Xiao Heng slowly opened his eyes.

His gaze was utterly clear, not a trace of sleepiness within them.

PLEASE CHECK OUT OUR NEW PROJECT:

Description:

In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.

When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.

The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.

From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.

***

Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.

After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"

Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"

Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”

Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
