The servant carried the little medicine chest with her, leaving Lanting Courtyard without stopping, then slipping out of the Princess Mansion, heading straight toward the side gate of Marquis Xuanping Estate, clearly intending to climb over the wall from there.
Inside the Marquis Estate, guards patrolled with swords in hand, and the place was under strict vigilance, yet the servant’s qinggong skill was excellent, and each time she managed to avoid being discovered.
At last, she reached the foot of the wall.
Marquis Xuanping was the foremost military marquis of the State of Zhao, and naturally the walls of his estate were far higher than those of ordinary households, yet for the servant, such obstacles were nothing at all.
She hugged the little medicine chest, leaped lightly, and with the tip of her foot tapping the top of the wall, sprang nimbly over.
However, at the very instant they landed, something unexpected occurred.
A vast net fell from the sky, covering her head and face entirely.
The servant’s reflexes were quick enough, and she instantly drew the dagger from her waist, slicing through the net in one stroke, yet in the brief moment it took to do so, a row of long spears had already leveled themselves at her neck!
Just guards, nothing the servant would usually pay heed to. Yet in the next second, she dared not act recklessly.
Because on the perimeter, over a hundred archers had already drawn their bows, the cold arrowheads aimed directly at her.
This was not a one-on-one or one-against-many fight. This was absolute tactical suppression. No expert could slip free with ease.
The servant, with dagger in one hand and medicine chest in the other, her gaze icy cold, was contemplating how to respond, when behind the line of archers, more than a dozen dark guards bearing torches escorted a man clad in a crescent-white robe forward.
The archers opened an orderly path for him, and once his group had entered the encirclement, they swiftly closed ranks again.
Under the torchlight, the young man’s face was revealed. The servant recognized him, and her pupils trembled violently.
Xiao Heng halted at a distance of about ten paces, his cold eyes glancing over the other party as he spoke indifferently, “You truly did not disappoint me.”
“You…”
The servant had just opened her mouth when she abruptly covered it with her hand.
Xiao Heng gave a faint smile. “No need to pretend. I already recognized you, Elder Li.”
The words ‘Elder Li’ struck like thunder. The servant’s body stiffened, her hand almost instinctively rising to touch her own face.
Xiao Heng said calmly, “The human-skin mask hasn’t fallen off.”
The servant’s hand moved toward her chest.
Xiao Heng said, “That hasn’t fallen off either.”
The servant nearly checked further down.
Xiao Heng’s expression darkened. “Enough!”
The servant… no, to be precise, Li Jiangping.
His brows were tightly furrowed, his eyes filled with shock as he stared at Xiao Heng. Xiao Heng’s expression was composed and steady, without the slightest hint of doubt, which made it clear that he was utterly certain of Li Jiangping’s identity.
To deny it further was meaningless.
In a deep voice, Li Jiangping asked, “How did you guess it was me?”
Xiao Heng replied coldly, “Very simple. You gave yourself away from the very start.”
Li Jiangping frowned. “I don’t understand.”
Xiao Heng raised his hand slightly. A dark guard stepped forward, retrieving a handkerchief from his robe and opening it before handing it to Xiao Heng.
Pinching up the iron nail inside, already stained with dried blood, Xiao Heng said, “You injured your palm when transporting the betrothal gifts, pricked by a nail sticking out from the crate above. To make the act convincing, you deliberately drove the nail back into the box. But here lies the flaw. These betrothal gifts were exceedingly precious, and to protect them from dampness, you all abandoned water routes. That precaution was effective, all the other nails remained dry and intact. Yet this one nail alone had rusted. And its hole was new, showing it had only just been driven in. Perhaps you would argue, ‘I merely replaced a nail,’ but tell me, who would ever choose a rusty one to replace it?”
Li Jiangping had never imagined he would trip over such a detail.
No. This was not negligence.
It was seamless, yet this man’s mind was too meticulous, too perverse, so much so that not even the smallest thread of a clue escaped his notice.
Through gritted teeth, Li Jiangping said, “And just from a single rusty nail?”
“Not only that.” Xiao Heng replied. “When Chang Jing warned you not to let Gu Jiao’s medical skills be spread, do you remember what you said?”
‘A man without sin, yet guilty because of the treasure he holds. I understand. Don’t worry.’
Those words resurfaced in his mind. Li Jiangping still did not understand where the flaw lay. “What about that line?”
Xiao Heng said evenly, “You probably didn’t even notice it yourself, but before you spoke that line, you used the motion of wiping your sweat as an excuse to glance at the medicine chest on the table. So I was certain that when you said ‘A man without sin, yet guilty because of the treasure he holds’, the treasure you meant was my wife’s medicine chest. You injured yourself deliberately, all for the sake of testing the medicine chest in her possession.”
Was this man some mythological underworld judge? How could his eyes be this sharp!
Li Jiangping had still wanted to deny it once or twice, but now it was impossible.
This was truly an ill-starred beginning, absolutely the fastest he had ever been exposed.
It was as if he had seen a ghost!
Clearly this man knew nothing of martial arts, and yet his gaze, his aura, was enough to make one’s heart pound in terror.
Everything had happened too quickly. Li Jiangping was completely stunned, left with far too little time to react or decide. He could only rely on his years of martial training and hurl himself recklessly at Xiao Heng, the only one present without martial skill!
Xiao Heng’s sudden appearance just happened to block the line of sight of the archers. So long as Li Jiangping was fast enough, he could seize Xiao Heng and use him as leverage to force the others to let him go.
As for the dark guards by Xiao Heng’s side, their pitiful skills were nothing in his eyes!
Li Jiangping was an expert of Hidden Night Island, and his ability was beyond question.
His internal force sent the dark guards flying, and his hand shot forward to clamp down viciously on Xiao Heng’s throat.
But just as he was about to succeed, in the branches of a great tree, someone who had been lying in wait curled his lips in disdain, aimed, and suddenly pulled the trigger!
With a thunderous blast, Li Jiangping’s entire body was blown back!
He slammed hard into the wall behind him, then crumpled to the ground in a wretched heap!
“Click.”
Perched on the branch, Shangguan Qing frowned, seemingly dissatisfied with his shot.
That shot had struck the little medicine chest hidden in Li Jiangping’s robes. He had not been split open on the spot, but the shock had been no small matter.
He spat out a mouthful of blood.
This time, the steamed bun hidden inside his robes really did fall out.
Shangguan Qing’s eyes burned in pain at the sight, utterly offended.
Little Jing Kong can scare me, but you absolutely cannot.
Without hesitation, he reloaded.
This was a newly improved firelance, and its accuracy and speed had increased, but with that came much stronger recoil, something he was still not entirely used to.
“Tonight, I’ll use you for practice.”
He aimed at Li Jiangping’s head.
At that moment, a sudden change occurred. A terrifying sword qi slashed through the air, forcing back the dark guards of Marquis Xuanping Estate. A swordsman clad in gray swooped down from the sky, seized Li Jiangping from the ground, and carried him away at great speed.
The man’s qinggong skill was no less than Gu Chengfeng’s, and in the blink of an eye, both he and Li Jiangping had vanished without a trace.
Shangguan Qing leapt down from the tree with the firelance in his arms. He looked at the spot where Li Jiangping had fallen, then glanced at Xiao Heng. “You’re not going to give chase?”
Xiao Heng gazed in the direction they had fled and said, “No need.”
Shangguan Qing slung the firelance over his shoulder. “But they took JiaoJiao’s medicine chest with them.”
That Li Jiangping’s hand was quick; he had not forgotten to snatch up the medicine chest from the ground before leaving.
“It’s fine.” Xiao Heng said.
“What do you mean ‘it’s fine’? That chest is precious, you know? I just fired a shot at it and it didn’t even break!” Shangguan Qing said.
Xiao Heng was not surprised.
JiaoJiao had told him that the little medicine chest did not belong to this world, and it might not even be its true form.
In this dimension, it could only appear in this shape.
Shangguan Qing snorted. “Really fine? If JiaoJiao wakes up and finds her medicine chest gone, she’ll definitely be furious. I’d like to see how you’ll coax your wife then!”
Xiao Heng only smiled faintly, not continuing the topic. Instead, he asked, “Are you all right? Did you get hurt?”
The recoil of the new firelance was no small matter.
Shangguan Qing rubbed his small chest muscles. “Feels a bit numb, but it’s fine. By the way, what’s with that Li Jiangping? Why would he want to steal JiaoJiao’s medicine chest? Who sent him? Hidden Night Island?”
Xiao Heng shook his head. “Not Hidden Night Island. Sword Lodge.”
“But wasn’t Sword Lodge destroyed?” Shangguan Qing had already heard from his father about how Chang Jing and the others had gone to Sword Lodge Island to take revenge.
Xiao Heng said thoughtfully, “It seems now that Sword Lodge pulled off a cicada-shedding-its-shell trick.”

Description:
In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.
When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.
The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.
From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.
***
Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.
After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"
Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"
Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”
Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
