Xiao Heng asked in puzzlement, “But isn’t the little medicine chest yours? Why would it show up on Hidden Night Island?”

Gu Jiao shook her head. “I don’t know.”

It was indeed a mystery, and even she had no clue.

The two decided to go and ask Chang Jing.

“Your medicine chest showed up on our island? I don’t know anything about that.”

In the garden of the Marquis Xuanping Estate, Chang Jing looked bewildered. Then he asked the same question as Xiao Heng, “Why would your thing appear on our island? You’ve never even been there.”

If Gu Jiao knew the answer, she would not have come to ask Chang Jing. She continued, “How much do you know about the first Island Lord?”

Chang Jing said helplessly, “Hidden Night Island was originally a deserted island. Only after the first Island Lord arrived did he rebuild it into a sect, take in the nearby fishermen, and plant purple herbs. That’s all I know. If you want to find out more about the first Island Lord, you might only be able to ask my father. Even Uncle Li doesn’t really know much.”

“Was the first Island Lord really a man or a woman?” Xiao Heng suddenly asked.

Chang Jing instinctively replied, “A man, I guess…”

Xiao Heng’s tone grew stern. “What do you mean by ‘a man, I guess’? Are you certain or not?”

Chang Jing thought for a while. “No one ever told me. But aren’t Island Lords always men? Has there ever been a woman as an Island Lord? If there was, then could my sister be the Island Lord instead? That way I wouldn’t have to inherit the Hidden Night Sect.”

The two exchanged a glance.

Little Chang Jing’s childish mindset was on a completely different wavelength from theirs.

No wonder he got along well with Jing Kong.

Xiao Heng turned to Gu Jiao and said, “I’ll investigate them. You don’t need to worry.”

“All right.”

Gu Jiao was not the kind of person to stop living just because of possible dangers. Even though people from the Sword Lodge had infiltrated the capital, daily life still had to go on as usual.

After breakfast, Gu Jiao took Little Jing Kong with her and boarded the carriage for their outing.

Little Jing Kong swung his small legs and said in a low voice, “JiaoJiao, why don’t we not go on the outing today?”

“Why?” Gu Jiao asked.

Little Jing Kong lowered his eyes and said, “I feel a little tired today.”

Gu Jiao curved her lips into a smile. “You’re not tired.”

Little Jing Kong opened his mouth, just about to say something, but Gu Jiao added, “And I’m not that delicate either.”

It was just pregnancy. Aside from changes in appetite and sleep, everything else was the same as before.

She had been busy with her own affairs recently and had neglected Little Jing Kong. He was growing day by day, and she did not want to turn around one day and find him already independent while she had missed his whole childhood.

She looked at Little Jing Kong seriously and said, “I want to go on an outing with you. Will you keep me company?”

Looking into Gu Jiao’s eyes, Little Jing Kong could feel that she truly wanted to go. His spirit immediately lifted, and he nodded enthusiastically like pounding garlic. “Yes, yes! I love going out with JiaoJiao the most!”

Gu Jiao was moved by his innocence.

She began to imagine the little baby’s appearance. If they would be like Jing Kong, she thought, she would really love them dearly.

She stroked Little Jing Kong’s small head and said, “Tonight we’ll go to the Duke Estate for dinner, and tomorrow we’ll go to Bishui Alley to keep Grandaunt company while she plays leaf cards.”

Little Jing Kong raised both hands and feet in agreement. “I’ll do whatever JiaoJiao says!”

……

Bishui Alley.

Gu Yan stood at the entrance, looking around.

Gu Xiaobao imitated him and looked around too.

“What are you doing?” Gu Yan asked him.

“What you doing?” Gu Xiaobao shot back.

Gu Yan was both exasperated and amused by his adult-like tone. “I’m waiting for someone.”

Gu Xiaobao: “Also waiting someone.”

Gu Yan: “I’m waiting for Xiaoshun.”

“I waiting for… no, not waiting Xiaoshun.” Gu Xiaobao belatedly waved his little hand, also copying Gu Yan in how he called Xiaoshun.

“You should call him Big Brother Xiaoshun. And also, sister isn’t coming today.” Gu Yan pointed it out bluntly.

Gu Xiaobao tilted his head back, looking at his elder brother unhappily. “She’s coming.”

Not long after, Gu Xiaoshun returned.

Gu Yan’s eyes lit up. “Is it ready?”

Gu Xiaoshun said in a sneaky tone, “It’s ready.”

“Let me see it!” Gu Yan stretched out his hand.

Gu Xiaobao stared at his two elder brothers in confusion, not understanding what they were up to.

Gu Xiaoshun quietly slipped something into Gu Yan’s arms. “There are plenty of these on the streets. Why must you insist on having one drawn and specially made? I don’t even know if it’s to your liking. Anyway, the silver’s all gone. I asked the most experienced master craftsman to do it.”

Gu Yan said, “All right. Watch Xiaobao, I need to step out.”

“Mm.” Gu Xiaoshun carried the little one back into the house.

Gu Yan, meanwhile, took a carriage to the military camp.

Gu Changqing was observing the soldiers’ drills when suddenly a guard hurried over and whispered something into his ear. He lifted his hand slightly. “I understand.”

Then he turned to the generals observing with him and said, “Excuse me, I must step away.”

The generals exchanged strange looks. This was the large-scale drill held only once every three months.

What matter could be so urgent that General Gu would leave halfway through?

And he was leaving in quite a hurry too!

Gu Changqing strode quickly outside the camp, and sure enough, he saw a slender figure pacing back and forth beside a carriage.

“Ah Yan.”

He called out.

Gu Yan froze when he heard the voice and turned around blankly. “You, you came out?”

Gu Changqing smiled faintly. “Someone told me you had come to see me.”

“I didn’t…” Gu Yan instinctively denied.

He had indeed come to see him, but he hadn’t told anyone.

He knew the camp was busy and hadn’t planned to disturb him, only waiting until he finished before meeting him.

Gu Changqing did not tell Gu Yan that it was his personal guard who had recognized him.

Within the camp, Gu Changqing was the cold-faced Yama, yet before Gu Yan and Gu Jiao, he was always the doting elder brother.

Seeing Gu Yan’s cheeks red from the sun, he immediately led him into his own tent.

“Bring some ice.” He ordered a guard.

The guard was startled.

Didn’t you never use such things?

Description:

In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.

When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.

The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.

From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.

***

Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.

After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"

Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"

Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”

Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
