Also, many thanks to everyone who bought me coffee (*≧∀≦*)
Half an hour later, Xiao Heng finished his conversation with the three men from Marquis Xuanping Estate and returned to the Princess Mansion together with Shangguan Qing.
Shangguan Qing yawned, waved his hand at Xiao Heng, and said, “I’m so sleepy, I’ll go to bed first. You should rest early too.”
“Got it.” Xiao Heng replied.
Shangguan Qing swaggered off, hugging his new firelance.
Xiao Heng looked at his stride, which was identical to that of his own father, and couldn’t help but shake his head with a smile.
When he entered the room, his eyes immediately landed on the little medicine chest on the table.
The corners of his lips curved faintly as he walked over, lifted his slender jade-like hand, and lightly patted it.
……..
At the break of dawn, Gu Jiao slowly woke up. She kept feeling as if a pair of eyes was watching her, the kind that was impossible to ignore.
When she finally opened her eyes, she saw Little Jing Kong leaning by the bedside.
His gaze was full of concentration, though she had no idea how long he had been keeping watch. Yet the instant he noticed she was awake, his entire little face lit up with life.
“JiaoJiao, you’re awake?” He said crisply.
Gu Jiao curved her lips. “Have you been here long?”
What a wonderful way to start the day, admiring this little handsome boy.
Although he was no longer a three-year-old dumpling, even at six he was still incomparably cute and dashing.
Little Jing Kong shook his head. “I just got here.”
“Heh, you’ve clearly been here half an hour already.”
Just then, someone stepped inside holding a scroll, mercilessly exposing the little fellow’s lie.
Little Jing Kong turned and glared at his bad brother-in-law, then corrected him solemnly, “When I’m with you, every day feels like a year. But when I’m with JiaoJiao, time flies, it’s disappears”
He rattled off two idioms in one breath, and even made them rhyme. Truly worthy of being a child prodigy in the Imperial Academy’s prodigy class.
Gu Jiao got up to wash, and Little Jing Kong trailed after her like a little tail, stealing glances at her from time to time but saying nothing.
After she set down her handkerchief, Gu Jiao asked, “What is it?”
Little Jing Kong hesitated for a moment, but then decided to ask honestly, “JiaoJiao, do you… have a baby in your tummy?”
Gu Jiao cast a glance at Xiao Heng, who was tidying up the desk, and more or less understood where Little Jing Kong had gotten his news from.
Showing off the baby, I see.
As expected of you.
Gu Jiao hummed softly and said, “Yes, there is a baby, one as cute as Jing Kong.”
“As cute as me?”
The words hit right where they should, and Little Jing Kong immediately perked up, even beginning to look forward to the baby in Gu Jiao’s belly.
But then something came to his mind, and he murmured in hesitation, “But… but, if JiaoJiao has a baby, will you still like me? Am I still the most handsome little man in JiaoJiao’s heart?”
Gu Jiao smiled, pinched his small cheeks, bent down so she was eye-level with him, and said with a gentle smile, “Of course I will. I’ll always like you, more and more with each passing day.”
“Aiya!” Little Jing Kong was overcome with shyness, his cheeks flushing red as he turned around and covered his burning face. “I’ll go bring JiaoJiao breakfast first!”
With that, he bolted out bashfully!
He was already out in the corridor when he suddenly stopped, puffed up his small chest in front of the window, and showed off to Xiao Heng, who was still arranging the desk inside, “JiaoJiao likes me! I’m the most handsome! Humph!”
Having won back a round, Little Jing Kong marched off valiantly!
Xiao Heng felt a toothache coming on.
……
While Little Jing Kong was off fetching breakfast, Xiao Heng told Gu Jiao about what had happened last night.
Gu Jiao was not too surprised at Li Jiangping’s betrayal, though the points that aroused her suspicion were somewhat different from Xiao Heng’s.
She recalled, “When they handed me the nail, it was wrapped in a clean handkerchief. At the border, I saw far too many such wounded cases. Ordinary people would never keep a nail like that, they would wish for nothing more than to throw it away immediately so that no one else would get hurt by it again. Even if they did keep it, they would just toss it aside casually. But to wrap it in a handkerchief, as though they were afraid of damaging the bloodstains and rust on it, that was unusual.”
Xiao Heng looked at her with admiration in his eyes. “JiaoJiao, you are truly so clever.”
Gu Jiao nodded seriously. “That’s right, I am very clever.”
Xiao Heng chuckled.
Something occurred to Gu Jiao, and she asked, “But how did you know it would come back on its own? I didn’t even know that.”
“You didn’t know?” Xiao Heng was surprised. He had thought she was fully aware of every detail about her medicine chest.
Gu Jiao shook her head.
Xiao Heng helped her recall. “Do you remember that time you were trapped in the collapsed wine cellar?”
“I remember. You jumped down to find me.” Gu Jiao said.
Her chest had been crushed beneath a massive boulder, and she had almost suffocated; she thought she was going to die.
In the darkness, he had grasped her hand.
“Later, when we were both rescued, your medicine chest had fallen into the ruins. The site was too dangerous back then, and there was no way to dig it out. But when I went back, I discovered it was right there by your side. At the time, I thought I had seen it wrong. Only when you later told me it wasn’t an ordinary medicine chest did I realize that I hadn’t been mistaken that day.”
Hearing him say this, Gu Jiao also remembered something.
That was during the polo match in the State of Yan.
She clearly remembered she hadn’t brought the medicine chest with her, yet it had appeared in her basket.
She had assumed it was Gu Xiaoshun or Gu Yan who had put it there——
In addition, back when she had first crossed over here, the little medicine chest hadn’t been around either. It only appeared when she urgently needed it.
Gu Jiao cast a resentful glance at the little medicine chest on the table. “If I had known you could do this, I wouldn’t have gone through so much trouble lugging you around everywhere.”
Moving it from place to place was so tiring.
She tapped the little medicine chest. “Can’t you be more obvious about it? Sometimes when I didn’t bring you, if you had appeared a few more times, I would’ve figured it out earlier. Did you do it on purpose? Do you only feel happy when I carry you in my arms every single day?”
A morning breeze blew past, but the little medicine chest stayed as quiet as a chicken.
……
Xiao Heng sorted through the events of the previous night. At present, there were three questions without any clue at all.
First, how did the Sword Lodge learn about the medicine chest?
Second, what did the Sword Lodge want with the medicine chest?
Third, what was Li Jiangping’s purpose in infiltrating the Hidden Night Sect? If his goal was to deal with the Hidden Night Sect, it would not make sense that after twenty years he still hadn’t found a chance to strike.
Gu Jiao had no leads on the first two questions either, but as for the third, she had her own view. “The Sword Lodge had Li Jiangping lie low in the Hidden Night Sect for years. Aside from the usual task of passing information to them, the only significant thing he ever did was come here to steal the medicine chest.”
Xiao Heng’s gaze deepened. “You mean, his purpose in infiltrating the Hidden Night Sect was the medicine chest. But he had already been on Hidden Night Island twenty years ago. Back then Chang Jing wasn’t even born, and neither were you. Could it be that they are like the Imperial Advisor, able to foresee the future?”
Gu Jiao paused for a moment. “What if… they thought the medicine chest was on Hidden Night Island?”
“Hm?” Xiao Heng was slightly startled.
Gu Jiao said, “Purple herb is something that came from the medicine chest. And the very first purple herb was planted by the first Island Lord of Hidden Night Island. I now suspect that the medicine chest once appeared on Hidden Night Island.”

Description:
In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.
When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.
The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.
From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.
***
Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.
After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"
Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"
Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”
Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
